California's Skeet Reese Opens up Commanding
Lead in Bassmaster Elite Series Event on Potomac River, Bassmaster
Angler of the Year Race
August 11, 2007 - LA PLATA, Md. With a
lead of more than 8 pounds over Charlie Hartley of Grove City,
Ohio, at the Capitol Clash presented by Advance Auto Parts on
the Potomac River, Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., inched closer
to avenging a number of frustrating second-place finishes in
2007 Bassmaster Elite Series competition and sewing up his "ultimate
goal the prestigious 2007 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of
the Year.
On Saturday, Reese tripled the margin of his lead
with 17 pounds, 14 ounces the heaviest limit in the field.
With many of the top competitors struggling, Reese built an early
limit and nearly lapped the field while looking for his third
BASS win.
Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The
Bassmasters and see which angler wins the $100,000 top prize
at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, on ESPN2.
"At the forefront of my focus is this tournament.
I want to win this one bad, said Reese, who now has amassed more
than $1 million in career BASS earnings. "I would
really like to put an end to the string of close calls that I
have had.
Reese was referring to several disappointing but
productive finishes that started at this event last year with
a 7-ounce margin of defeat to 2006 champion Kelly Jordon of Mineola,
Texas. Then, Reese fell to Boyd Duckett by a 6-ounce margin
at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic and finished second at Elite Series
events this year on California's Clear Lake and New York's Lake
Champlain.
By retaining the lead through the third day of
the Capitol Clash, Reese gains another five-point bonus in the
Angler of the Year race. Surprisingly, Reese's closest
AOY competitor, Kevin VanDam, a three-time Angler of the Year
himself, finished Saturday in a disappointing 21st place.
No matter his finish Sunday, Reese stands to gain significant
points on VanDam heading into the final Elite event of the season
on Florida's Lake Tohopekaliga.
Fishing slowly and methodically, Reese has been
flipping to protected areas. While he has been flanked
by some spectator boats, his primary area has been left alone
by other competitors. Reese feels that a limit of 10 pounds
Sunday might be enough to clinch the tournament.
"Catching a limit Sunday is easier said than
done, Reese said. "But I'm in a fantastic position.
I couldn't have had a better day than today, and everything is
clicking for me right now.
Hartley made the jump from 18th to second place
with a Saturday catch of 17 pounds, 5 ounces. Hartley,
who has totaled 44 pounds, 8 ounces, over three days, made an
early decision to visit an area new to him after the first two
days of competition.
The decision paid off. Hartley built his limit
to 17 pounds by 7 a.m. The Ohio pro plans to go back to the area,
which he described as a "deep hole inside a grass bed.
"I had the greatest morning, said Hartley,
who celebrated his 43rd birthday Wednesday. "That
allowed me to practice the rest of the day and I think I can
make a run at this thing Sunday.
In third was Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., with
43 pounds, 4 ounces. Less than a pound behind Biffle was
Chris Lane of Winter Haven, Fla., in fourth with 42 pounds, 6
ounces. Tied for fifth with 41 pounds, 11 ounces, were
Matt Reed of Madisonville, Texas, and Randy Howell of Springville,
Ala.
In the co-angler division, which ended Saturday,
Mike Acord of Pennsylvania totaled 32 pounds, 9 ounces, over
three days, earning a Triton Boat package valued at $50,000.
Finishing behind Acord were Joel Etheredge of Alabama with 25
pounds, 10 ounces, and Mark Heatwole of Virginia with 25 pounds,
8 ounces.
Only the top 12 qualifiers will fish Sunday, the
final day of competition. Those who made the cut included
2007 Bassmaster Classic champion Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala.,
in seventh with 40 pounds, 7 ounces, and defending Capitol Clash
champion Jordon, in eighth with 40 pounds, 5 ounces.
