 Little Rock Angler Takes $250,000
Top Prize in Final Major of Season
August 27, 2006 - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. With
Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee watching, Little Rock resident Scott
Rook came from behind Sunday to win the third and final Bassmaster
Major, the Bassmaster Legends presented by Goodyear on the Arkansas
River. Rook, 45, who had previously finished second three times
in BASS events, scored his first BASS win in his 97th career
tournament and received $250,000. Fishing fans can watch the on-the-water action
from the Bassmaster Legends on ESPN2 on Saturday, Sept. 2, at
10 a.m. ET. "I,ve waited for this so long, said Rook.
"It,s just a dream come true. Rook, who was in second place entering the final
competition day, caught four fish weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces,
giving him a 15-4 total for the last two days of the tournament.
The top 12 anglers after the first two days had their weights
zeroed and fished a marked, six-hole course located along a nine-mile
stretch of the river on Saturday, with the top six advancing
to fish the same course on Sunday. The finalists had 70 minutes
at each hole and could then go to any of the six during the final
"happy hour of competition. Rook discovered a successful pattern of flipping
soft plastic baits on Saturday, but said he had to adjust to
different conditions Sunday. "The water was down about 10 inches on the
upper end of the pool, said Rook. "From 20 years of fishing
this river, I knew those fish were going to pull out. I started
fishing everything that was out in the water, like logs and bridge
pilings. I think my local knowledge really played into my hands.
" Rook won by a margin of almost 3 pounds over Greg
Hackney of Gonzales, La., who had the heaviest catch Sunday with
four fish weighing 8-3. He finished with with a 12-5 two-day
total. Hackney edged another local favorite, Kevin Short of Mayflower,
for the runner-up position. Short caught three fish weighing
6-9 on Sunday and finished with 12-4, or 1 ounce behind Hackney.
"The key to today was having good patience,
said Hackney. "I fished everything today. When it,s really
tough like this, you have to just be slow and methodical. Similar to Rook, Short had a huge fan following
on the river and in the full crowd at the weigh-in at Little
Rock,s Statehouse Convention Center. "I didn,t have trouble
focusing as much as I had trouble locating fish, just like everybody
else, Short said. "I found one little school in this pool
and milked it for all it was worth. I was only going to be satisfied
if I was hauling the trophy, but I,m still very happy. Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Fla., who was the
leader going into the final day, fell to fourth place after failing
to catch a keeper fish. "I knew I was in trouble right from
the start of the day, he said. Gary Klein (8-4) of Weatherford, Texas, and Gerald
Swindle (5-10) of Hayden, Ala., completed the top six. Gov. Huckabee, an avid outdoorsman, watched some
of the fishing action on the river early in the day and then
took in the weigh-in ceremonies from the audience. He congratulated
Rook afterward. "It was exciting to have the very best bass
fishermen in Little Rock and Arkansas, and I think people can
see that Arkansas loves bass fishing, he said. "It,s not
a sport to us. It,s a religious experience. The Legends was in honor of BASS founder Ray Scott,
who presented Rook with the tournament trophy.     Day 4 Purolator Big Bass Greg Hackney, Gonzales, La., 2-14 Day 4 Busch Heavyweight Bag Greg Hackney, Gonzales, La., 8-3     2006 Bassmaster Legends 08/24-08/27 Arkansas River, Little Rock  Ark. 523-15 GRIGSBY TAKES COMMAND OF BASSMASTER LEGENDS
 $250,000 Top Prize Awaits Sunday's
Winner of 3rd Major August 26, 2006 - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Veteran
angler Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Fla., put himself in prime
position to win his first BASS tournament in six years Saturday
by taking a lead of more than 3 pounds in the third and final
Bassmaster Major, the Bassmaster Legends presented by Goodyear
on the Arkansas River. Grigsby and five other finalists will
battle it out Sunday for a $250,000 winner,s check. The 50-year-old Grigsby caught four fish weighing
11 pounds, 5 ounces on Saturday. Hometown favorite Scott Rook,
who caught three fish, posted the second-highest total at 7-14,
followed by another local, Kevin Short of nearby Mayflower, Ark.,
at 5-11 with two fish. "I don,t feel confident at all, said Grigsby,
whose last of eight career BASS wins was at Georgia,s Lake Seminole
in February of 2000. "A lead here doesn,t mean anything.
Very honestly, I could zero (Sunday). The fishing is really tough.
I was just blessed to catch keepers. The unique format of the Bassmaster Majors placed
the 12 finalists on a marked, six-hole course located along a
nine-mile stretch of the river on Saturday, including the Little
Rock waterfront area. The finalists had 70 minutes at each hole
and started the day equally with no weight to their credit. The
anglers chose the order they fished the holes based on their
position in the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings.
The top six competitors will fish the six-hole course on Sunday
with weights from Saturday carrying over. Rook, whose years of experience on the Arkansas
River made him a pre-event favorite, said that he fished until
11 a.m. before getting his first bite, which also became his
first keeper. "After I got that first bite I figured out
what to do, he said. "I did it the rest of the day and ended
up catching two more keepers. Rook said he was flipping soft
plastic baits. Short, who has been fishing the entire tournament
with a homemade topwater prop bait, was thrilled to advance to
the final six. "I never in my wildest dreams thought I,d
be sleeping in my own bed and fishing in my own backyard for
$250,000, he said. "I,m not worried about the pressure.
I just want to catch fish. Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., was fourth Saturday
with 4-2, followed by Gary Klein of Weatherford, Tex., at 4-1
and Gerald Swindle of Hayden, Ala., at 3-9 to complete the top
six that will fish Sunday. Grigsby, who declined to disclose his fishing tactics,
said that he plans to follow the same pattern on the final day.
"It,s been a long dry spell, he said. "You work really
hard to get in a position like this and just hope you don,t mess
it up. I just have to go out there and fish as hard as I can,
catch every one of them and not make any mistakes. The Legends is in honor of BASS founder Ray Scott.
Also, Arkansas angler Mike Wurm, who didn,t make
the final 12 for the Bassmaster Legends, sang the national anthem
at Saturday,s weigh-in. Wurm is an accomplished singer and once
was selected to an all-state choir. He has performed the anthem
at other smaller sporting events. "It had been a few years,
he said. "I,d be lying if I said I wasn,t nervous. I,d rather
have been fishing. Day 3 Purolator Big Bass Shaw Grigsby, Gainesville, Fla., 3-14 Day 3 Busch Heavyweight Bag Shaw Grigsby, Gainesville, Fla., 11-5 (PRO Division) Standings Day 3 Angler Hometown

12 Finalists to Start Day 3
on Equal Footing in Chase for $250,000 Top Prize August 25, 2006 - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Two
days of consistent catches have given Gerald Swindle of Hayden,
Ala., momentum as the third and final Bassmaster Major, the Bassmaster
Legends presented by Goodyear on the Arkansas River, heads into
its final two days of competition. Swindle, the 2004 CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the
Year who is seeking his first BASS win, caught a five-fish limit
weighing 10 pounds, 15 ounces on Friday, giving him a two-day
total of 21-12 and placing him first among the 12 anglers who
qualified to continue in pursuit of the $250,000 first prize.
While many of the original 55 anglers traveled
both north and south of Little Rock to fish on the first two
days, a unique feature of the Bassmaster Majors will place the
      12 finalists on a marked, six-hole course located along a nine-mile
stretch of the river on Saturday, including the Little Rock waterfront
area. The finalists, who will fish for 70 minutes in
each hole, will start Day 3 equally with no weight to their credit.
The anglers choose the order they will fish based on their position
in the CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings. Steve Kennedy,
who is in second place in those standings, has priority. Only
the top six competitors will fish the six-hole course on Sunday,
the final day of the tournament, with weights from Saturday carrying
over. Swindle said he caught all of his keeper fish on
both days by flipping in the same area. "I,ve been on a
very specific pattern, he said. "I,m going to stay on that
same technique (Saturday), but I may have to switch to a buzzbait.
      Somebody,s going to catch a 4-pounder on a buzzbait and it,s
going to put them in the winner,s circle. Swindle spent two hours exploring the six-hole
course area, which was off-limits for fishing. "I found
four or five places I want to try, he said. "You can,t try
to fish the whole course. You,ll have to fish it slow and do
it right. You,re going to need a lot of different stuff. Little Rock resident Scott Rook was second among
      the 12 qualifiers with 19-5. "It,s anybody,s ballgame on
the six-hole course, said Rook. "I know that section of
the river probably better than all of these guys combined, but
that doesn,t mean anything against this caliber of competition.
It,s going to boil down to who catches the biggest fish. Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., had the biggest
catch on Friday, a five-fish total of 13-4 that placed him fifth
among the 12 qualifiers. Hackney said he caught his fish in backwater
located south of Little Rock using a crankbait. "I can,t
really dial in on anything I was doing the first two days, he
said. "I think the best fish are going to come from the
downtown-area of the course. Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., had the second-biggest
catch on Friday with 12-5 to make the top 12 while Kevin VanDam
of Kalamazoo, Mich., caught 11-13 to also advance in third position.
Joe Green of English, Ind., who served as an observer
with Hackney, won a fully-rigged Triton boat valued at $30,000
after Hackney caught the Purolator Big Bass of the Day at 4-8.
Hackney also had the BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day with his
13-4 limit. Day 2 Purolator Big Bass Greg Hackney, Gonzales, La., 4-8 Day 2 Busch Heavyweight Bag Greg Hackney, Gonzales, La., 13-4 (PRO Division) Standings Day 2     Angler

Kansan Brent Chapman in fifthBRIAN SNOWDEN LEADS BASSMASTER LEGENDS
 Arkansas River Conditions Challenge
Anglers in Battle for $250,000 Top Prize
August 24, 2006 - LITTLE ROCK, Ark.   Under
difficult conditions that baffled some of the best bass anglers
in the world, Reeds Spring, Mo., angler Brian Snowden found enough
fish on Thursday to take the lead by nearly three pounds of
the third and final Bassmaster Major, the Bassmaster Legends
presented by Goodyear on the Arkansas River. The 33-year-old was one of only two in the field
of 55 anglers to catch a five-fish limit, weighing in at 15 pounds,
8 ounces to lead the race for the $250,000 top prize. Hometown
favorite Scott Rook also caught five fish and was in second place
with 12-13. Snowden, who has never won a BASS tournament but
has two second-place finishes, said he caught his two biggest
fish within 50 feet of each other in  backwater that was
south of Little Rock. "It was a new area that I just looked
at in practice but never fished, he said. "It looked like
it had all the ingredients I wanted. I made a pass through, there
was a little water movement and I caught them. The three-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier caught
his fish with a 4-inch Yum tube in black neon. "I,m very
happy with the way things went and I,m going to catch everything
I can again (Friday). Rook, one of the last anglers to weigh in, fished
north of Little Rock and caught his fish in backwater that was
laden with grass. "It,s probably the toughest I,ve ever
seen the river in August, he said. "I was mixing it up with
worms, jigs, crankbaits and some spinnerbaits. Four-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic winner Rick
Clunn of Ava, Mo., was third with 10-15. Right behind was Gerald
Swindle of Hayden, Ala., with 10-13; and Brent Chapman of
Lake Quivira , Kansas, was in fifth with 10-3. "Hard work was the key, said Clunn, who won
the Bassmaster Classic on the Arkansas River in 1984. "Those
kinds of spots that you can just sit in and catch them like I
did in the ,84 Classic are rare in August. I,m having to work
a lot of water. The quality is there, but I,m grinding them out.
Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, had the Purolator Big
Bass, worth $1,000, at 4-12. Snowden had the BUSCH Heavyweight
Bag of the day. All 55 anglers will fish on Friday. The field cuts
to the top 12 for Saturday. Anglers will fish a marked, six-hole
course in the river on Saturday and Sunday, with only the top
six competitors fishing on the final day. The Legends is in honor
of BASS founder Ray Scott, who celebrated a b Day 1 Purolator Big Bass Alton Jones, Waco, Texas, 4-12 Day 1 BUSCH Heavyweight Bag of the Day Brian Snowden, Reeds Spring, Mo., 15-8 Legends Major Sponsors: CITGO Petroleum
