Fog slows second day of tournament

Pineville, LA November 11, 1999 - FOG HAPPENS.... After being held up for almost four hours by fog thick enough to cut with a knife, the first day of competition of the WBFA Tour Louisiana Invitational Pro/Am "Harvest Moon" Event finally got under way on Wednesday, November 10th. The anglers were in the water by 5:30am, the National Anthem was played, a beautiful fireworks display was presented and then we all waited for the fog to dissipate enough to see the far bank of the Red River, which we knew for certain was still there. There was music during the interim and the anglers were line dancing on the back decks of forty seven boats nosed into the sandy banks of Fort Buhlow Recreational Area. One hundred sausage and biscuits were ordered from McDonalds, along with three big pots of coffee, and consumed by competitors.

At 9:45am the fog lifted and the business at hand got under way promptly. Though some of the anglers had to change strategy, many ran to their fishing spots and were limited to only a couple of hours of fishing. With a good weigh-in crowd on hand the first day leaders in the Pro Division shook out like this: leading the pack was Colfax, LA resident JoNell Whitstine with 11.77 pounds. Second was claimed by Kathi Hurst of Ripley, MS, with Mary Divicenti of Baton Rouge, LA in third, fourth place found Linda Redford from Blue Eye, MO and fifth fell to Marcia Fann from Clewiston, FL. 1999 Rookie of the Year Betty Stahl from Summerville, GA weighed in the big bass of the day for the pros; a 4.63 pounder.

The Amateur Division leaders after the first day looked like this: Lynn Dollar from Cullman, AL was in first. Claiming second was Rita Graves from LA, third was grabbed by Rita Connella from Bentley, LA, in fourth was Dana Thornhill from Pineville, LA and Jonnie Bordelon of Mansura, LA, rounded out the top five. Lynn Dollar took first-day big-bass honors in the Am Division with a 2.72-pound bass.

The competitors were able to take off at safe-light on Thursday, the second day of competition. I personally missed all the fun of the delayed start, but the anglers were more than happy to get out and catch up on missed time. Marcia Fann weighed in a stringer of 14.15 pounds, which propelled her into the Pro Division lead after two days of competition with a total of 21.98 pounds. Rounding out the top five are JoNell Whitstine, in a close second with 20.74 pounds, Mary Divicenti, Linda Redford and Sheri Glasgow from Muskogee, OK. Marcia Fann took big-bass honors with a 4.26 pounder.

Amateur Division leaders after two days are: Dana Thornhill, Jonnie Bordelon, Rita Graves, Lynn Dollar and Rita Connella. Dana Thornhill claimed the big-bass award for the second day with a 1.67 pounder.

Friday will be the final day of competition with a dramatic finish expected. There will be a free-to-the-public concert featuring the band Central City, beginning at 1pm. There will be Triton boats on display and demonstration rides given by Red River Marine, also beginning at 1pm. The final weigh-in will begin at 3pm with awards immediately following.

The WBFA Tour is sponsored nationally by Mercury Marine, Triton Boats, Flowmaster Exhaust Systems, DEKA Marine Master Batteries, Spiderline, Minn Kota, Humminbird Electronics, Magellan GPS Systems, Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, Off The Road Bridgestone/Firestone Tires and Eidolon Bait Company.
