VanDam Again No. 1 In World After 2003
            Season
The 2003 tour regular seasons and championships are over,
and once again Kevin VanDam remains the No. 1-ranked angler in
the world. It would be tough to find anyone to whom that was a big surprise
since VanDam is and has been fishing at a pace that is so far
above his peers it's a little scary: This is the third straight
year (the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings are only 3 years
old) that VanDam has been the best in the world and he's never
relinquished the No. 1 spot. At one point during the season it looked like he would be
overtaken. In April and May, VanDam posted his two worst finishes
since mid-March (87th at the Clear Lake Bassmaster and 38th at
the Lake Hamilton Bassmaster) and had just a 3 1/2-point lead
in World Rankings points over Alton Jones. Jay Yelas was about
5 1/2 points away, and he and Jones were among those vying for
BASS Angler of the Year. But in the next five tour events, including both league championships,
VanDam had three Top 10 finishes, a Top 20 and a 34th while Jones
and Yelas didn't fish as well (or in some cases at all, on the
FLW Tour). As a result, VanDam is back almost to where he started
the season in the rankings, and now enjoys a double-digit points
lead over No. 2-ranked Kelly Jordon though it should be noted
that VanDam's points lead, while still large, has dropped significantly
(almost 8 points) from the start of the season. After the tour regular seasons were over, he said: "This
was probably the toughest year for me for several reasons. Weather-wise
it was a real tough season to fish. We had a lot of abnormal
conditions at the places we went, and at every Bassmaster event
this year it rained. "It also was tough competing in both tours for all the
events (15 possible events, from Florida to California). It was
physically and mentally probably more mentally taxing. I have
a routine I like to go through to be prepared for a tournament,
and it takes time. But this year we had no rest period, no time
to get set for the next one. "And when you have a wife and two young kids at home
wondering where dad is, that doesn't make it any easier,"
he noted. "So this season I didn't have the focus I normally
have. It was the worst season I've ever had." How does it feel being the No. 1 angler in the world? Does
he feel any pressure to stay there? "I really don't," VanDam said. "I just go out
and try to win every time. Sometimes I miss the mark by a long
way, which would hurt your standing in the world rankings, but
I'm not really focused on that. You can't let that change the
way you fish. "Winning tournaments is a lot more important than where
you're ranked, and the reality is that it's hard to win. Only
one guy out of 175 guys will win every time we go out there,
and if you start fishing conservatively you're not going to get
there. "At the beginning of my career I worried about cashing
a check," he noted. "That helps you with the year-end
standings, but it doesn't help you on the money list, that's
for sure. Now I'm more mature, I guess, so I can take chances
and take a shot at winning." He reiterated that "most of the time you're going to
fail. But occasionally the moon and the stars line up and it's
your turn." __________ MOVEMENT AFTER THE FLW CHAMPIONSHIP Following are the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings as updated
after the 2003 FLW Championship on the James River. Bear in mind
that FLW Tour anglers again have two championships in their scores
(since the 2001 FLW Championship was cancelled) and some movement
will occur because of that. Notable items: > Kevin VanDam is No. 1 in the world for the second straight
year. That means he has been fishing better than his peers for
4 consecutive years. > Along with VanDam, Kelly Jordon was the only angler in
the Top 5 to fish the FLW Championship, which likely helped him
climb into the No. 2 slot. > Tommy Biffle is back in the Top 10 at 7th. > FLW Championship winner David Dudley has been gradually
moving up in the rankings, and his win helps him crack the Top
            10. He's now ranked 8th in the world. > Clark Wendlandt is back in the Top 15 at 15th. Also: As with every rankings update, counterintuitive movement
can occur. This can be due to several factors, including: the
            tournament results dropped from 2 years ago (if applicable);
and how anglers above and below an angler are fishing/adding/dropping. __________ START OF SEASON VS. END OF SEASON Top 10 in the World Start of Season 1. in the world for at least the last 2 years are Kevin VanDam,
Alton Jones, Tim Horton and Mark Davis. > Anglers who started the season ranked in the Top 20 and
who are still there include Gary Klein (was 18th), Jay Yelas
(was 12th), Clark Wendlandt (was 7th, now 15th), Mike Wurm (was
6th, now 17th) and Brent Chapman (was 14th, now 19th). > Texas still dominates the Top 10 with three anglers,
but for the first time ever North Carolina has two anglers in
the Top 10. Biggest Moves Up 2. Kelly Jordon (from 23rd) 7. Tommy Biffle (from 28th) 8. David Dudley (from 59th) 10. Dustin Wilks (from 42nd) 11. Zell Rowland (from below 100) 13. Greg Hackney (from 49th) 14. Edwin Evers (from 65th) 16. Kenyon Hill (from 56th) 18. Dan Morehead (from 57th) 21. Ron Shuffield (was 90th) 22. Wesley Strader (was 80th) 24. Mark Menendez (was 68th) 38. Shaw E. Grigsby, Jr. (was 89th) 40. Andy Morgan (was 88th) Notable: > The higher an angler gets in the rankings, the tougher
it is to move up because everyone around you is fishing well. > Rowland, who had the biggest jump, came "from below
100" as the rankings only went to 100 at the start of the
season. Now the Top 200 anglers in the world are ranked. Biggest Falls 25. Dean Rojas (was 9th) 28. Aaron Martens (was 3rd) 29. Larry Nixon (was 4th) 35. Bud Pruitt (was 13th) 45. Davy Hite (was 19th) 47. David Walker (was 15th) 57. Rick Clunn (was 5th) Notable: > Rojas, Martens, Nixon, Hite and Clunn all two-tour pros
did poorly on the Bassmaster Tour this year. > Pruitt started off the season well and was ranked in
the Top 10 at one point, but bottomed out at the end. > Walker wasn't as consistent as Pruitt, but followed a
similar path. Three finishes below 100th and one 99th didn't
help. Best Debuts The best debuts on the rankings, meaning the pros who accumulated
2 years' worth of tour finishes this year, are: 12. John Murray Phoenix, AZ Skeeter/Mercury 33. Roger Boler Slidell, LA Skeeter/Yamaha 41. Andre Moore Scottsdale, AZ Ranger/Evinrude 43. World Rankings
VanDam continues as No. 1-Ranked Angler
 after Classic
Following are the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings as updated
after the Bassmaster Classic championship in New Orleans, La. A few notes on movement: > Kevin VanDam remains No. 1 even though he loses his Classic
win from 2 years ago in the formula (the World Rankings use a
rolling 2 years of data). However, his 15-point margin from before
the Classic shrinks to less than half of that. To be caught in
the rankings, he will have to stop being the most consistent
high-finisher in the world, or someone else will have to surpass
him. > Alton Jones and Kelly Jordon were 2nd and 3rd in the
world before the Classic, and are still there. But Jones finished
7th at the Classic to Jordon's 24th, which contributes to an
increase in the points between them. > Jay Yelas' points actually increase vs. his points before
the Classic, but Gary Klein moves past him into 4th, in part
due to Klein's 2nd-place finish (Yelas finished 19th at the Classic). > Dustin Wilks and Zell Rowland crack the Top 10 for the
first time. > In part on the strength of a good end of the season,
Kenyon Hill climbs from 26th to 14th in the world. > Classic winner Mike Iaconelli jumps from 83rd in the
world to 57th. Calculation Notes > Do not expect massive shifts in the rankings. The Classic
receives a lot of hype, but statistically it is a tour championship.
That means it receives more weight in the rankings formula than
a regular-season event, nothing more. > It will look like more Bassmaster Tour pros are in the
higher slots simply because the FLW Championship hasn't been
held yet. > Some pros might move more than others after the Classic
because they now have two Classics in their data whereas before

VanDam is No. 1-Ranked Angler Again
 Going Into Classic Championship
NEW ORLEANS, La., July 22, 2003 -- For an amazing third
straight year, Kalamazoo, Mich.'s Kevin VanDam is the No. 1-ranked
angler in the world going into the Bassmaster Classic championship
tournament, which will be held here next week. Because the statistical State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings
use a rolling two years of tournament data, that means VanDam
-- who is called the Tiger Woods of bass fishing -- has been
fishing substantially better than his peers for four straight
years. But this season was more difficult for him than the others,
and at one point it looked like he might be caught in the rankings. "This was probably the toughest year for me for several
reasons," he said. "Weather-wise it was a real tough
season to fish. We had a lot of abnormal conditions at the places
we went, and at every Bassmaster event this year it rained. It
was the Gore-Tex season. "It also was tough competing in both tours for all the
events (15 possible events, from Florida to California). It was
physically and mentally -- probably more mentally -- taxing.
I have a routine I like to go through to be prepared for a tournament,
and it takes time. But this year we had no rest period, no time
to get set for the next one. "And when you have a wife and two young kids at home
wondering where dad is, that doesn't make it any easier. So this
season I didn't have the focus I normally have. It was the worst
season I've ever had." "Worst" is a relative term when it comes to VanDam.
He finished 14th in the BASS points, and finished 22nd in the
FLW Tour points though he only fished five of the six events.
Also, in the last eight tournaments of the season, he had six
Top 20 finishes, three of which were Top 10s. "I just go out to do the best I can," he said about
his No. 1 ranking. "This year, because of the weather and
the schedule, I was fortunate that I didn't have any really bad
tournaments. Also, the rankings are based over the last couple
of years and last year was a pretty solid year for me. That's
probably what carried me this year." __________ A popular question is why Jay Yelas, the reigning Classic
champ and current BASS Angler of the Year, isn't No. 1 in the
State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings. Right now he is third,
behind VanDam and Texas' Alton Jones. Following are some quick
statistical notes on the matter, followed by Yelas feelings on
the matter. Statistical Notes > Titles reflect performance, but don't tell the whole
story. > Right now, because the rankings use a rolling two years
of data, both VanDam (2001 Classic winner) and Yelas (2002 Classic
winner) have a Classic win counted in their world rankings points. > This year Yelas was first in the BASS points and VanDam
was 14th. Last year VanDam was second in the points (for the
third year in a row) and Yelas was 27th. On the FLW Tour, this
year VanDam finished 22nd in the points and Yelas finished 157th.
Last year Yelas was first in the points, but VanDam was second. > VanDam had six Top 20 finishes in the last eight tour
events, and Yelas had three. Yelas also had a terrible finish
(119th) at the second-to-last tour event of the season (the Kentucky
Lake FLW) and didn't fish the last event (the Wheeler FLW). > Bear in mind that the rankings are over a rolling two
years, so there is a slight lag in some movement. Whether that
means Yelas will move up in the future remains to be seen. Yelas Statement "I've talked to a lot of fans who wanted to know why
I'm not ranked No. 1, but I think the rankings are dead on. I
didn't have a spectacular year last year. I just had a spectacular
tournament (the Classic) last year, and some good, solid fishing
this year. And I ended up winning (BASS) Angler of the Year by
a very small margin. Kevin and Alton have had higher average
finishes than me. This year I bombed out on the FLW Tour, and
last year I won FLW Angler of the Year and just did mediocre
on the Bassmaster Tour. That's why I'm down a little in the rankings." About the Rankings The State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings are the only statistical
world rankings of professional fishermen, and are the sport's
official rankings thanks to their endorsement by the Professional
Anglers Association, the player's association of professional
bass fishermen. The rankings are based on angler performance
on the Bassmaster and FLW tours. These are the top tours in the
sport and attract the top fishermen. The BassFan.com methodology
ensures that anglers who fish only one tour are not at a disadvantage
versus anglers who fish both tours. Rather, anglers who fish
more events (or both tours) have more chances to move up or down
than anglers who fish fewer events. New Jersey-based BassFan LLC provides the world's only daily
coverage of professional fishing. Its website, BassFan.com, receives
more traffic than any other fishing website in the world, and
is home to the State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings.

 2003 BassFan.com World Rankings
 June 25, 2003 - Following
are the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings as updated after last
week's FLW Tour event on Wheeler Lake. (Editors: Please refer
to the rankings as the State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings
or the STATE FARM BassFan.com World Rankings. Thank you.)

 Notable items:

 > Kevin VanDam is once again comfortably in the No. 1 slot
after a 4th-place finish at Wheeler. That was his third Top 10
finish in a row, and second Top 10 finish out of the last three.
He continues to outfish his peers, and for an amazing third straight
year will be the No. 1-ranked angler heading into the BASSMASTERS
            Classic.

 > Alton Jones and Jay Yelas sat out the Wheeler event and
paid the price in the rankings. Kelly Jordon, who had been ranked
4th, gained on his fellow Texans and Skeeter/Yamaha pros. While
Jones missed the last two FLW events and Yelas finished low at
Kentucky Lake and didn't fish Wheeler, Jordon finished about
100 places higher than Yelas at Kentucky Lake and was 17th at
Wheeler. In part because of that, he moves past Yelas in the
rankings into 3rd and is a mere point behind Jones, in 2nd.

 > Gary Klein, who has been alternating bad finishes with Top
20 finishes, hangs on to 5th.

 > Thanks in part to a 2nd at Wheeler, Tim Horton moves back
into the Top 10 in 7th (he had been 16th).

 > Tommy Biffle finished 10th at Wheeler and also climbs back
into the Top 10, in 9th (he was 15th).

 > FLW Angler of the Year Dan Morehead didn't fish well at
Wheeler, but moves up 8 spots to 17th.

 > Wheeler winner Aaron Martens climbs from 39th to 21st.
