1999 B.A.S.S. National Federation
Western Divisional Championship
Lake Pleasant - Phoenix, Ariz.
May 19-21, 1999

Day 2 Results

Idaho Angler Holds 'Both' Leads
in Lake Pleasant B.A.S.S. Tournament
State Champions Advance Tomorrow to National Semifinals
PHOENIX, May 20, 1999
-Charlie Lynch of Hayden, Idaho, ran away with his
state team's lead after the second day of fishing on Lake Pleasant at the
B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation's Western Divisional. As an added bonus, he
also nailed down the top overall spot for the second consecutive day. Lynch
leads the tournament with a two-day catch of 23 pounds, 10 ounces. His
closest threat is not overall runner-up Jason Allred, but fellow teammate
and eighth place holder Travis Jarvis, whose total score stands at 20
pounds, 11 ounces.

Lynch could experience the best of both worlds if he holds on to his leads
when the tournament ends tomorrow afternoon. In a unique twist to
tournament bass fishing, his ultimate prize is not necessarily to claim the
first place trophy. Instead, it is to lead the standings of his 12-man
state team.

These amateurs qualified for this tournament by advancing through local
bass club tournaments to qualify for their 12-man state team. Represented
in this competition are the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho,
Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
State champions from 46 states advance to the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National
Championship set for Tennessee next April. They will be joined by national
champions from Canada, Japan, Italy, Zimbabwe and South Africa to compete
for the five positions available to B.A.S.S. amateurs in the 2000 BASS
Masters Classic, widely considered the sport's world championship. One
state champion from this competition will represent the Western Division at
the Classic. Others will come from the Eastern, Central, Southern, and
Northern divisions comprising the B.A.S.S. Federation.

Other state leaders after today include Allred (Washington), Greg Gutierrez
(California), Scott Nielsen (Utah), Judy Chaney (Arizona), Trent Loukas
(New Mexico), Stan Fisher (Montana), Darryl Burkhardt (Oregon), Donald
Allen (Wyoming), and Donnie Cox (Colorado). Nielsen has qualified for the
National Championship for the past two years.

Rick Innocenti of Kirkland, Wash., caught the day's biggest bass, a 5-pound
largemouth worth $200 in bonus cash. Overall, the anglers collectively
caught 477 bass, down from the 519 caught yesterday. Today's total weight
was 780 pounds, 5 ounces, as compared to the 873 pounds, 3 ounces crossing
the scales yesterday. A "legal" bass for the contestants must measure a
minimum of 12 inches with a five-bass maximum per angler. Today, there were
81 limits caught from Lake Pleasant.

When the tournament concludes tomorrow, $19,200 in cash will be distributed
to the teams. First place receives $6,400, second earns $3,600, and third
gets $2,800. The money is used to fund conservation projects conducted by
each respective state to enhance and protect fishing and water quality.

The B.A.S.S. Federation is a global network of bass clubs that function
primarily as the conservation arm of the 600,000-member Bass Anglers
Sportsman Society. Today, more than 2,800 clubs and 50,000 members belong
to the Federation program.

Tomorrow's final weigh-in begins at 2:30 p.m. at Pleasant Harbor Marina.
The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

Sponsors of the B.A.S.S. National Federation Western Division Championship

Idaho Angler Claims Lead
in Lake Pleasant B.A.S.S. Tournament
Twelve to Advance on Friday to National Semifinals,
then World Championship
PHOENIX, May 19, 1999
-Charlie Lynch of Hayden, Idaho, traveled a long way
to go bass fishing in Arizona, and today, it paid off. He caught a
five-bass tournament limit weighing 13 pounds, 6 ounces, to take the first
round lead at the B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation's Western Division
championship underway through Friday on Lake Pleasant. Marco Rodriguez of
Nyssa, Ore., has second place with 12 pounds, 1 ounce.

In a unique twist to tournament bass fishing, the ultimate prize for both
anglers in is not necessarily to claim the first place trophy. By Friday,
their goal is to place first on their state teams and advance toward
another step in their quest for bass fishing's world championship.

Federation.

Although they are from different states, Lynch and Rodriquez are both on
the Idaho state team, meaning only one angler would advance to the National
Champions. Other state leaders include Stan Fisher (Montana); Jim Broberg
(Washington); Donnie Cox (Colorado); Terry Howell (Utah); Andy Bravence
(Arizona); Darryl Burkhardt (Oregon); Trent Loukas (Texas); Greg Gutierrez
(California); Franco Vallejos (New Mexico).

Steve Weeks of Meridian, Idaho, caught today's biggest bass weighing 5
pounds, 2 ounces. He collected $200 in B.A.S.S. cash of the prized catch.
Overall, the 120 anglers collectively caught 519 bass weighing 873 pounds,
3 ounces. A "legal" bass for the contestants must measure a minimum of 12
inches with a five-bass maximum per angler. Today, there were 81 limits
caught from Lake Pleasant.

This tournament pays $19,200 in awards to the teams. First place receives
$6,400, second earns $3,600, and third gets $2,800. The money is used to
fund conservation projects conducted by each respective state to enhance
and protect fishing and water quality.

The B.A.S.S. Federation is a global network of clubs that hold tournaments
but more importantly function as the environmental arm of the
600,000-member Bass Anglers Sportsman Society. Today, more than 2,800 clubs
and 50,000 members belong to clubs affiliated with the Federation program.

Daily weigh-ins begin at 2:20 p.m. local time at Pleasant Harbor Marina.
The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

Kansan Mike Edrington ends tournament in 14th
Dramatic conclusion to Wrangler/B.A.S.S.
National Championship event
Shreveport, Louisiana, April 24, 1999
-- Kansan Mike Edrington brought in another five fish limit, but fell short of making it to the Classic as the representative for the central region of B.A.S.S He ended as the fourth highest central region finisher and 14th overall.

A college student, tackle shop manager, glass shop owner, landscaper and fishing guide have advanced to bass fishing's world championship event as amateurs to compete alongside the sport's top pros at the BASS Masters Classic.

They are Chris Elliott, a 23-year-old college student from Raleigh, N.C., Michael Iaconelli, 26, a tackle store manager from Runnemede, N.J., Rodney Wagley, 42, a glass shop owner, Kurt Walters, 36, a landscape manager from Aurora, Co., and Art
Ferguson, 34, a fishing guide from Rochester, Mich.

The five qualified for bass fishing's world championship by winning their individual divisions at the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship held here on the Red River. Each are members of the B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation, the grass-roots side of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, which also conducts the multi-million dollar BASSMASTER Tournament Trail.

The Federation is divided into five geographical divisions. Iaconelli, who placed first overall with a three-day weight of 44 pounds,15 ounces, will represent the Eastern Division. He also pocketed the $15,000 first place prize for the win.

Third-place overall finisher Wagley caught 43 pounds, 15 ounces to place tops in the Central Division. Elliott placed fourth overall with a score of 42 pounds, 5 ounces, to earn him the Southern vie in the Classic. Walters had 40 pounds, 4 ounces, to win the Western Division, and Ferguson caught 39 pounds, 5 ounces, to win the Northern Division.

Each of the five also become Wrangler Anglers by virtue of their finishes, meaning they will have paid entry fees in the BASSMASTER Invitational Tournament Trail of their choice for the 1999-2000 season.

The top finishers found their fish staging midway along secondary transition areas between the flats and main river channel. Such a scenario paid off for overall winner Iaconelli, a member of the Bass Fever Excaliburs club in his hometown. Throughout the competition, his fish staged on semi-submerged timber situated between a spawning flat in the back of an oxbow lake and the main river channel.

With the water dropping during the tournament, he discovered in ingenious pattern that enabled him to stay in one location even though the conditions changed.

"The fish didn't move at all, the just moved up and down the water column depending on the light conditions," he said. "On Thursday (day one), it was cloudy and windy so they were shallow, about three or four feet. The sun came out on Friday and they
dropped vertically to about seven feet. Today the conditions were the same and they were at about the same depth."

Iaconelli used a Stone Jig (blue/black), a homemade bait he helped design for Fort Fishing Lures, an upstart lure company in his home state. He added a Reaction Lures' Grub (black, blue) for added strike appeal. Thursday, he used a 3/8-ounce model before switching to a 1/2-ounce size Friday and today. He used the lighter jig Thursday to prolong the bait's time in the strike zone and switched to the heavier bait to reach the deeper fish Friday and Saturday.

The jig was an asset, since it allowed him to fish the jig vertically with the changing light conditions. His lure presentation focused on pitching and flipping the jig to individual lay-down trees and allowing it to free fall to the proper depth.

"When the fish were shallow, I'd let it drop and then pick it up again," he said. "I'd never let it fall any deeper than where the fish were holding at the time. It was about like slow-rolling a spinnerbait."

He used that exact bait and technique on Friday when the fish were deeper. Specifically, it was a 1/2-ounce Viper Spinnerbait (white/chartreuse) sporting three Colorado blades.

This tournament broke two all-time records for the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship. They were for total tournament weight and single one-day catch. Collectively, the 51 anglers caught 1,422 pounds, 7 ounces from the Red River, with the single-day record broken here by Delaware's Bruce Lynch with 22 pounds, 4 ounces. That record was also set here in 1997 by Zimbabwe's Gerry Jooste.

Kansan Mike Edrington in tenth after two days
One-Pound Lead for Delaware Angler at
Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship
Shreveport, Louisiana, April 23, 1999
-- Kansan Mike Edrington brought in another five fish limit to bring his total weight up to 24 pounds 10 ounces. Going into today's round of fishing, Edrington was in seventh place.

Bruce Lynch of Dagsboro, Del., has a precarious lead going into tomorrow's final round of the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship on the Red River. That is because local favorite Rodney Wagley of nearby Baton Rouge is just 1 pound, 14 ounces from stealing the victory away from him.

In today's action, Lynch caught a five-bass tournament limit weighing 11 pounds, 13 ounces to give him a two-day score of 34 pounds, 1 ounces. Wagley made adjustments to his strategy and moved from third place overall into second with an impressive limit weighing 15 pounds, 13 ounces for a total score of 32 pounds, 4 ounces.

Although Lynch and Wagley are competing for the overall championship, there is much more at stake in this competition. Up for grabs are five coveted spots in the BASS Masters Classic, the sports world championship that is set for July in New Orleans on the Mississippi River Delta.

At the conclusion of tomorrow's competition, the leader from each of the five geographical regions represented in this tournament will advance to the Classic. As it stands, that list currently consists of leader Lynch of the Eastern Division and the Central Division's Wagley.

Other leaders include the Western Division's Kurt Walters of Aurora, Co., the Northern Division's Art Ferguson from Rochester, Mich., and the Southern Division's Chris Elliott of Raliegh, N.C. Lynch, a 29-year-old pharmaceutical company supervisor, is targeting an underwater ridge functioning as a transitional staging area for spawning bass. It is bordered on one side by a shallow sand flat where the fish are spawning with a slough on the opposite side. The key to the area is found in the dense cover that litters the area.

"I picked this spot because it's so hard to fish," he said. "It discourages a lot of other
anglers from fishing in the area. It's really thick cover but also a prime staging area for the fish. I hope it's replenished tomorrow when I go back."

To reach the fish, Lynch is pitching a 5-inch Gambler Super Tube into likely spawning areas. He noted the clearing water conditions might hinder this pattern that requires dingy water to be productive.

Wagley, a 42-year-old self-employed glass installer, went on a road trip to boat today's limit. He began the day in Pool 5 at his key spot where he boated only one keeper. He then moved into Pool 4, where he targeted a 100-yard ridge located off the main river. The spot features a five foot depth on top with 12 feet of water on each side. The key to his spot is a combination of cottonwoods and oaks on top of the ridge, where he boated rounded out his five bass limit by casting a spinnerbait parallel to the wood. He then returned to the original spot in Pool 4, where he culled the limit by pitching and swimming a 3/8-ounce jig into dense cover.

In spite of being solidly in the lead of his division, Wagley will not be satisfied with his performance unless he earns his trip to the Classic. "The quality of this fishery is amazing," he said. "A guy could come in here tomorrow with a twenty pound stringer and blow it wide open."

In all, there are 51 anglers in this international competition from 46 states, Canada, Japan, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. And for the very first time, Italy. They represent the B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation, a global network of bass clubs affiliated with the 600,000-member Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.).

The Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship concludes tomorrow in Shreveport. Weigh-in begins at 2:20 p.m. (Central) at the Shreveport Civic Center Complex-Exhibition Hall. Expo '99, an outdoor show featuring the latest fishing tackle and related gear, is being held concurrently with the National Championship.

Kansan Mike Edrington in 7th place after day one
Delaware Angler Leads
Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship
Anchors Catch with Six-Pound-Plus
Big Bass of the Day
Shreveport, Louisiana, April 22, 1999
-- Bruce Lynch, a 29-year-old amateur angler from Dagsboro, Del., has taken the first round lead in the 1999 Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship underway here on the Red River. Lynch's five-bass tournament limit weighed 22 pounds, 4 ounces. It also included a 6-pound, 8-ounce lunker--the biggest bass caught today. In second place is Michael Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J., with 17 pounds, 10 ounces.

Kansan Mike Edrington is in seventh place with 14 pounds from his five fish limit caught on day one, only one ounce behind the sixth place and a little under four pounds out of second

Lynch lived every tournament angler's dream today. He was boating 12-inch "keeper" fish within 10 minutes of arriving at his hot spot, a place that yielded nearly a dozen bass weighing up to six pounds during a March scouting trip. Lynch wisely left the area after catching his limit by 10 a.m. this morning.

"I'm doing something different from the other anglers," he said. "The fish are in very thick cover and it requires a very methodical presentation to effectively reach into where they are holding."

Very thick cover, indeed. Lynch's big fish became entangled inside a brushpile and nearly got away. "I was about ready to jump into the water and go after it," he said. Without giving away his strategy, Lynch said he's catching post-spawn fish that are staging on secondary structure just off the main river channel.

The object of this tournament is not necessarily to win first place. Up for grabs are five coveted spots for the amateurs in the BASS Masters Classic, the sport's world championship set for July in New Orleans on the Mississippi River Delta.

In all, there are 51 anglers in this international competition from 46 states, Canada, Japan, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. And, for the very first time, Italy. They represent the B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation, a global network of bass clubs affiliated with the 600,000-member Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.).

The clubs and contestants in this competition are divided into five geographical regions. The five leaders from each of region advance to the BASS Masters Classic after the competition ends on Saturday. Current regional leaders include Lynch from the Eastern Division, third-place overall angler Rodney Wagley of the
Central Division, the Northern Division Art Ferguson, South Africa's Justin Varkevisser of the Southern Division, and Washington state's Renaud Pelletier of the Western Division.

Lynch has the right goal in mind. "Winning this tournament would simply be the gravy for me," he said. "What I really want is to make the Classic."

He's already come close once before. Last year, Lynch qualified for the National Championship held on the Tennessee River in Knoxville, Tenn. He was eliminated from the Eastern Division's top spot after a dismal final round. "I'm going to try really hard to stay focused and not let that happen twice in a row."

This same tournament was held here in 1997 on a flood-swollen Red River. In this tournament are three anglers who competed in that event, among them Utah's Scott Nielsen.

"It's like night and day compared to the last time," he said. "Mainly because the water is much lower and that makes the textbook areas much more defined and easier to find. Last time, you could find these areas but it took some strategy. There was always a sweet spot you could go off to and catch a kicker fish or two.
Now, these types of spots are exposed and everybody's keying on them."

The Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship continues through Saturday in Shreveport. Weigh-ins begin at 2:20 p.m. (Central) at the Shreveport Civic Center Complex-Exhibition Hall. Expo '99, an outdoor show featuring the latest fishing tackle and related gear, is being held concurrently with the National Championship. On Saturday, 94 youths between the ages of 7 and 14 will compete Saturday from 9 a.m.-Noon in the BASSMASTER CastingKids national semi-finals. Ten of them will advance to the national championship to be held during this July's BASS Masters Classic in New Orleans. All events are free to the public.

Sponsors of the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship are: Wrangler Rugged Wear, Ranger Boats, RangerTrail Trailers, Chevrolet Trucks, ACDelco Batteries, MotorGuide Trolling Motors, Mercury, Kmart, Humminbird/Zercom, JERZEES OUTDOORS, Flowmaster Exhaust Systems, Quantum Rods and Reels, Plano Tackle Systems, Eagle Claw Fishing Hooks, Berkley Powerbait, Berkley Trilene, Pennzoil Marine, Shreveport Regional Sports Authority, Shreveport Bossier Convention & Tourist Bureau.

Free daily weigh-ins will be held in the Shreveport Civic Center

A free fishing tackle and equipment show, Expo '99, will be held in
conjunction with the event. Hours are Thursday and Friday, April 22 and
23, from Noon - 7:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 24, from 9:00 a.m. until
Noon.

While the fifty-one anglers are out on the water, ninety-four
BASSMASTER CastingKids state champions in two age groups -- 7-10 and
11-14 -- will compete Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - Noon in the national
semifinals presented by Zebco and Kmart. The top-ranked caster in each
age group from each of the five divisions qualifies to compete for the
national title at the CastingKids National Championship in New Orleans
July 30.

Conservation, environmental and fishing issues will be under
discussion in the State B.A.S.S. Federation's Conservation Directors
Workshop Tuesday-Friday. Among the topics to be discussed: Cormorant
predation on smallmouth bass in Lake Ontario; the National Recreation
Lake Study Commission; the Oregon proposal to de-regulate bass and other
warm-water gamefish; Teaming with wildlife: New national legislation to
fund wildlife management; the California outboard/two cycle ban; the EPA
lead sinker issue; the problems and proposed solutions; the EPA lead
sinker proposals: impact on the sportfishing industry and your fishing;
Bass tournaments: the resource and the public; and Tournament associated
mortality in black bass.

Growth of bass fishing: Bass fishing has been surging in popularity
since the Bass Angler's Sportsman Society began promoting the sport in
the late - 1960s and early 1970s. Membership in the Society went from
10,000 in the early 1970s, to 400,000 in the mid-1980s. Today, it's the
world's largest fishing organization with approximately 600,000 members
-- and it's still growing.

In addition to its $6 million pro BASSMASTER Tournament Trail, the
largest payout of any tournament circuit, B.A.S.S. administers more than
2,700 local clubs -- most of which belong to one of the 46 state or five
international B.A.S.S. Federations.

Club champions competed for positions on their state teams; then
competed in their regions' B.A.S.S. Federation Divisional tournament for
their state title -- or, in the case of the international anglers, their
country's title -- in order to earn a slot in this event.

Here they compete against other state/country champions from their
division. The five winners -- one each from the southern, eastern,
northern, central, and western B.A.S.S. divisions -- qualify to compete
with the full-time pros in the BASS Masters Classic world championship
in New Orleans July 29-31.

In addition, the five who qualify for the Classic, become Wrangler
Anglers for a year. As Wrangler Anglers, they get a Wrangler sponsorship
package which includes: expense monies for practicing for the BASS
Masters Classic and entry fees into one of the three BASSMASTER
Invitational trails next season, plus a Wrangler Rugged Wear wardrobe of
jeans, shirts and accessories such as travel gear, rainsuits and
customized jackets.

Anglers may weigh no more than five, 12-inch minimum-length bass each
day. The angler with the greatest number of pounds and ounces at the end
of three days wins.

Bios and newspaper quality 300 dpi photos of the contenders will be
posted to the BASSMASTER web site at http://www.bassmaster.com the week
of April 12. Daily standings and stories will be posted there each
evening during the event. An expanded wrap-up story and newspaper
quality photos will be posted a couple of days later.

The angler on the hot seat here will be Rodney Wagley, 42, of Baton
Rouge, who will be cheered on by the home-state Louisiana crowd. Wagley,
who owns a glass installation company, is no new-comer to these ranks.
He qualified for this event in 1998, and competed in the 1997 and 1998
B.A.S.S. Federation Central Divisional tournaments.

"I made the national last year, and I actually did my homework for
that," Wagley said, "but mother nature threw every contestant a curve
with the weather . . . and everything I learned scouting went to
nothing.

"You know the old saying, you'd better watch what you wish for,
because you might get it. On the way home, I said a little prayer:
"Lord, I sure wish I had another shot at the national. . . . I made it."
And, B.A.S.S. then announced not only that the event would be in his
home state -- but that the Classic would be in his home state. "I want
to tell you something, it's put a lot of pressure on me. I almost wish
this tournament was held in Canada! " he said laughing. "The Classic
waters are my home waters -- but the road there goes through
Shreveport." And those are waters that he has fished very little.

"Even though I'm from Louisiana, [Shreveport's] in the northern part,
and it's a relatively new fishery. It's not anything I've fished prior
to this event. I was able to go up there before the cutoff in January,
and I familiarized myself with the areas. And, then they allowed us the
nine-day scouting period and I spent all nine days on the water fishing.

"It's a river system -- a pretty big river system, -- with a lot of
old oxbow lakes, but now they're flooded," Wagley said. "There's a lot
of timber to fish -- a lot of dead standing timber. . . . it offers an
angler any type of fishing they would prefer doing. There's something
for any style of fishing.

"We'll have two days to scout ," he noted, "but they're short days
and I'm used to scouting from daylight to dark. So I've been looking at
my charts and reviewing my notes and trying to decide where I'm going to
put my efforts when I get there. I already know what I'm going to throw
and [what I'm going to] do, as far as catching the fish -- it's just a
matter of where. That will be my most difficult part -- settling down on
where to fish the first day.

"There are no secrets," about the fishery, Wagley says. "Everyone
knows the same stuff. It impressed me how many people I would see, from
Maine and all over the place [during the pre-practice], that had the
same information. They know what's going on. There have been a lot of
fronts going through since the scouting period. It will be interesting
to see how much it's changed since then. That will play a big role in
what I do."
