B.A.S.S. Federation Divisional
Yankton, S.D.
Lewis and Clark Lake - June 7-9, 2000 - Yankton, S.D.

Final Story
High Winds on Lewis and Clark Lake Force Early End to Federation's Central Divisional

Eight amateur B.A.S.S. angler's are crowned state champs
Jason Baird of Hope limits both days for Kansas crown

YANKTON, S.D., June 9, 2000 - Dan Finkral did not factor high winds into
his strategy for fishing the B.A.S.S. National Federation Central Division
Championship held on Lewis and Clark Lake. It would not have really
mattered either way.

But blow the wind did early this morning, forcing B.A.S.S. officials to
cancel the final round of this regional competition from eight states and
Africa. In doing so, Finkral, of Norfolk, Neb., has been declared the
winner.

"It was a wise decision to cancel the tournament," said Don Corkran,
national director of the B.A.S.S. Federation. "We did it for safety
reasons, knowing the forecast calls for winds in the 35 to 40 mph range."

Finkral, a 40-year-old truck parts salesman, both days caught the maximum
limit of 5 bass measuring at least 12 inches. His two-day total of 10 bass
weighed 25 pounds, 3 ounces. His nearest competition was Pete Ponds of
Madison, Miss, whose 10 bass weighed 22 pounds, 11 ounces.

Finkral said the spawn was about complete on Lewis and Clark, although he
pinpointed the winning catch on the beds. Other anglers targeted the less
reliable post-spawners that were moving targets between the shallows and
main river channel.

Finkral used one bait to win the tournament. It was a 4-inch Luck 'E'
Strike Ringworm (camouflage) that he Texas-rigged to a No. 1 Owner Hook and
1/8-ounce slip sinker. The rig was fished on 10-pound test Stren Super
Tough line and Shimano spinning tackle.

While the spawning target was popular with other anglers, Finkral found a
different angle with his clever pattern. He targeted old growth reeds where
smallmouths were bedding in 2- to 3-feet of calm water on a sandy,
irregular bottom. Closer to the shoreline, new growth reeds were the target
of other anglers.

"I was catching fish behind other guys," said Finkral, a member of the
Norfolk Bassmasters club in his hometown. "A few years ago, this lake
flooded and I was fishing what I suspect was the original reed line. The
other guys were fishing the greener reeds that established themselves on
the new shoreline."

That was the key. The fish were actually bedding out in the deeper water,
using the older dead reeds for cover," he continued. "The reeds I fished
were hard to see and that factor alone gave me an edge."

Finkral was not the only winner in this tournament that made state
champions of eight anglers one day sooner. From here, Nebraska's Finkral
and his peers advance to next spring's B.A.S.S. National Championship. They
will join other state champions from across the nation to compete for their
respective divisional crowns. This group will fish for the Central Division
title. Others come from the Western, Northern, Eastern, and Southern
divisions of the grass-roots network of B.A.S.S. clubs. The divisional
winners will advance to the 2001 BASS Masters Classic to compete rod-to-rod
for the world championship with the sport's top 40 anglers. (Note: This
year's Classic is July 20-22 in Chicago on Lake Michigan.)

Joining Finkral is overall runner-up Pete Ponds from Mississippi;
Louisiana's Trey Morgan; and Matt Eisenbacher of Missouri. Others on the
team include Oklahoma's Jody Linder; Jason Baird of Kansas; Louisiana's
Steven Junot; Joe Partain of Arkansas; and Texan Jim Behnken. The African
nation of Zimbabwe will send its national champion.

The national championship qualifiers also fished as a team for bragging
rights in the state competition. At the conclusion of yesterday's
competition, Nebraska and Arkansas were locked in a tie with their 12-man
teams posting collective weights of 142 pounds, 1 ounce.

In the event of a tie-breaker, B.A.S.S. rules call for the team with the
most legal fish (5 maximum per angler measuring at least 12 inches) to be
declared the winner. Both teams caught 79 fish weighing the same weight.

"It's unbelievable that two 12-man teams can catch 79 fish weighing exactly
the same weight down to the ounce," said Corkran. "There is such a high
potential for individuals and teams to tie that we had to get picky about
the rules, but this particular scenario was amazing."

The next level in the official rulebook states the team with the most legal
and live fish is declared the winner. As fate would have it, Nebraska had
one dead fish, giving it a total of 78 live bass. By virtue of the
tie-breaking process in the rulebook, that gave the state championship to
Arkansas, which takes home the $11,000 cash prize for conservation
projects. Nebraska received $6,300 for the same purpose. "That one dead
fish cost Nebraska $4,700," added Corkran.

Overall, the 108 anglers caught 603 fish weighing 1,072 pounds, 14 ounces.
The biggest fish weighed 4 pounds, 13 ounces and was caught Wednesday by
Zimbabwe's Biff Humphreys.

The next tournament under this format is the Southern Divisional at
Alabama's Lake Eufaula, June 21-23.

Day 2 Story
State Championships and More Up for Grabs Tomorrow at B.A.S.S. Tournament on Lewis and Clark

YANKTON, S.D., June 8, 2000 - Eight anglers will come one step closer to
realizing a working bass fisherman's dream when the B.A.S.S. National
Federation Central Division Championship ends tomorrow on Lewis and Clark
Lake. One of them is the tournament leader, Dan Finkral of Norfolk, Neb.,
who continued his lead in the regional tournament of bass clubs.

Fishing on Lewis and Clark are 12-angler teams from the states of Arkansas,
Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. The
African nation of Zimbabwe, where B.A.S.S. stocked largemouth bass in the
1908s, is also represented in the tournament.

Finkral's two-day total for 10 bass stands at 25 pounds, 3 ounces.
Mississippi's Pete Ponds is second with 22 pounds, 11 ounces and Trey
Morgan of Louisiana third with 22 pounds, 10 ounces. Fourth place is held
by Missouri's Matt Eisenbacher with 21 pounds, 10 ounces and Doug Pinkley
of Nebraska fifth with 21 pounds, 5 ounces.

Finkral found his area receiving more pressure today. "It's getting thin
and there are a lot of guys fishing in my area," he said. "I may have to
make an adjustment tomorrow if things don't go well early in the day."

He is targeting spawning fish in the backwater areas of the fishery. Most
of the fish had finished spawning and were migrating back to their
summertime holding areas in the main lake. "We're on the tail end of the
spawn," he added. "Every day that goes by, there are fewer spawning fish to
catch."

Other fish are being caught in a pattern that relies on a combination of
moving water and aquatic reeds. Said Finkral, "Those fish are more
plentiful, hungry, and biting more aggressively. I have a go-to area like
that, although I haven't had to rely on it yet."

Had the tournament ended today, Finkral would have won the overall titled
plus earned his state team's title. In doing so, he would advance one step
further to bass fishing's world championship in a process that began with
his local bass club. The eight anglers placing first among their state's
teammates advance to next spring's B.A.S.S. National Championship.

The National Championship will send the Central Division's top angler and
four others from the other geographical divisions of the B.A.S.S.
Federation to the 2001 BASS Masters Classic. There, they will compete
rod-to-rod with the sport's top 40 anglers for the world championship.
(Note: This year's Classic is July 20-22 in Chicago on Lake Michigan.)

The anglers face a 5 bass and 12-inch minimum length limit on Lewis and
Clark. Only artificial lures are allowed and the anglers are encouraged to
return to the weigh-in scales with their catch alive. Not doing so results
in a 4-ounce penalty per fish.

Keith Goodin of Louisville, Miss., caught the day's biggest bass that
weighed 4 pounds, 1 ounce. Overall, the anglers caught 313 keepers (23 more
than yesterday) weighing a collective 540 pounds, 6 ounces. There were 34
limits caught.

The first-place team receives $11,000 to take home for conservation
projects in its home state. Arkansas and Nebraska are locked in a tie for
first place with a collective weight of 142 pounds, 1 ounce.

The final weigh-in for the Central Divisional begins at 2:30 p.m. local
time at Lewis and Clark Recreation Area in Yankton.

Day 1 Story

Nebraska Angler Leads B.A.S.S. Tournament on South Dakota's Lewis and Clark Lake

YANKTON, S.D., June 7, 2000 -If variety is the spice of life, then Lewis
and Clark Lake is the place for bass fishermen to be this week after
first-round action at the B.A.S.S. National Federation Central Division
Championship. The regional tournament of state champions from eight states
and Africa is underway here through Friday.

Leading the contest is Dan Frinkral of Norfolk, Neb., who caught the
tournament limit of 5 bass that weighed 14 pounds, 4 ounces. Within ounces
is Billy Joe Gipson of Clarksville, Ark., with a limit weighing 14 pounds,
1 ounce. Third is Trey Morgan of Goldonna, La., with 12-9, Pete Ponds of
Madison, Miss., is fourth with 11-15, and fifth place is Russell Matt of
St. Joseph, Mo., with 11-6.

Finkral says the fish are being caught three completely different ways, or
just about any way you can catch bass in the springtime. Some are being
caught as they spawn, others are being coming and going to spawning sites
between shallow backwaters and the river channel. Others are being found
holding to sand bars in the main river channel, a popular summertime
pattern on this lake.

"I'm catching spawning fish in the backwaters, but overall, the fish are in
transition," said Finkral. "You can catch them just about any way you want
if you know how."

He said the actively feeding post-spawn fish are being caught along
shorelines holding a combination of reeds and current. "The edges of the
reed lines are the best, because the fish are holding there to ambush the
bait coming down with the current," he added.

The tournament is one of five regional championships held nationwide that
attract state champions from bass clubs affiliated with the Bass Anglers
Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) and its grass-roots federation arm.
Contestants qualified by outfishing anglers in their local clubs.

This contest is unique to bass fishing. The winner's trophy is indeed a
coveted prize. However, placing first on each respective state team is the
ultimate goal. On Friday, the winners will advance to next spring's
B.A.S.S. National Championship and compete for their respective divisional
title (Central, Western, Eastern, Southern, Northern). The five divisional
champions go to the 2001 BASS Masters Classic world championship to compete
with the sport's top 40 pros for the international angling title, lucrative
endorsement contracts and a professional career on the BASSMASTER
Tournament Trail.

The anglers face a 5 bass and 12-inch minimum length limit on Lewis and
Clark. Only artificial lures are allowed and the anglers are encouraged to
return to the weigh-in scales with their catch alive. Not doing so results
in a 4-ounce penalty per fish.

Zimbabwe's Biff Humphries' bass weighing 4 pounds, 13 ounces was the
biggest caught today. Overall, the anglers caught 290 keepers weighing a
collective 532 pounds, 8 ounces. There were 27 limits caught.

The first-place team receives $11,000 to take home for conservation
projects in its home state. Arkansas leads with 71 pounds, 6 ounces,
followed by Nebraska's 70 pounds, 12 ounces. Third place is Louisiana with
70 pounds, 2 ounces, Missouri in fourth with 67 pounds, 2 ounces, and Texas
fifth with 54 pounds, 14 ounces.

Daily weigh-ins for the Central Divisional begin at 2:30 p.m. local time at
Lewis and Clark Recreation Area in Yankton.

Sponsors of the B.A.S.S. National Federation Central Divisional
Championship are Ranger Boats, RangerTrail Trailers, Mercury Marine,
