Oklahoma Team Rocks State Standings
Kansas' Scott Stephenson Wins B.A.S.S. Central Divisional Tournament on Tombigbee Waterway
COLUMBUS, Miss., June 18, 1999-
-Scott Stephenson, a 37-year-old respiratory
therapist from Topeka, Kan., staged a come-from-behind win at the B.A.S.S.
Central Divisional that concluded today on the Tennessee-Tombigbee
Waterway. His three-day total of 15 bass weighed 26 pounds, 14 ounces.
After leading the tournament for the first two days, Oklahoma's Dean Matts
dropped to second place to finish with 24 pounds, 14 ounces.

In addition ot Stephenson's victory, Mark Moody of Farlington, KS finished 12th and Kevin Sherfey of Harrisonville, KS finished 14th with 2 ounces less weight than Moody.

Stephenson and Matts are two of nine anglers who will advance from here to
next April's Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship on the Tennessee River
in Knoxville, Tenn. The National Championship is the semifinals for
amateurs aspiring to qualify for the 2000 BASS Masters Classic, widely
considered the sport's world championship.

Matts, a 50-year-old general manager of a waste management company, had
made his 19th state team without having qualified for the semifinals. "It's
satisfying to know that I'm not going to be bridesmaid anymore," he said.
"I've had a lot of second-place finishes through the years and this is a
great feeling."

For three days, Matts pitched a worm to the thickest root wads of laydowns
that he could find in the Aliceville and Columbus pools. His main objective
was to locate laydowns associated with current.

Stephenson and Matts, who placed first on their 12-man Kansas and Oklahoma
state teams, respectively, will be joined by the following other state
champions at the 2000 National Championship: Danny Paul Thompson
(Louisiana); Timothy Clark (Arkansas); Hoot Gibson (Mississippi); Bobby
Maynard (Texas); and Kent Priel (Nebraska). David Beattie will represent
the nation of Zimbabwe.

Stephenson, a member of the Capital City Bassmasters, scored 5 pounds on
day one, 10 pounds, 8 ounces yesterday and finished today with 10 pounds,
11 ounces. He will be making his second trip to Knoxville, where he
qualified for his first National Championship in 1997. He will most
certainly do better the next go around, since he went fishless for the
entire three-day competition. Here though, it was different.

"I had one goal here and that was to win the whole tournament," he said.
"I've been to the Nationals already, and can't wait to go back, but this
brought it all full circle."

Stephenson relied on the technique that he excels in when fishing in his
home state, which is pattern fish in creek arms. On the Tennessee-Tombigbee
Waterway, Stephenson chose a creek in the Columbus Pool, and specifically
in Tibbee Creek, where he ran more than 20 miles upstream from its
confluence with the main river channel.

Central to the pattern was a combination of baitfish, current, stained
water, and cover. The key, he said, were the eddies in areas that held the
strongest current.

"The best places were on the down current side with channel swings in the
strongest current," he said. "The fish were using the current to their
advantage because they were holding in the eddies and ambushing the
baitfish as they were being swept downstream."

Stephenson's bait choice was a Brush Hog, a soft plastic bait that he
Texas-rigged to a 5/0 EWC hook and 5/16-ounce slip sinker. The rig was tied
to 35-pound test Lynch braided line spooled to a Quantum reel and Falcon
rod.

His presentation involved flipping the rig into the eddy water and make
contact with any cover. "I couldn't see everything that I was flipping to,
but whenever the bait made contact with a stump, grass, anything, it was
likely that I'd get a strike."

The tournament's big bass was caught today by Mississippi's Brett Thompson,
who weighed a 9-pound, 8-ounce trophy that he landed on a 3/8-ounce Strike
King Premier Denny Brauer Jig. The strike ocurred after Thompson flipped
the jig into a brushpile positioned in four feet of water. He collected
$200 for the catch.

Oklahoma regained its lead in the team standings to take home the $11,000
in cash that it will use for civic and conservation projects in its home
state. Oklahoma led the first day before being upended yesterday by
eventual runner-up Louisiana. Oklahoma's three-day total was 212 pounds, 10
ounces, followed by the 188 pounds, 5 ounces, caught by Louisiana. Host
state Mississippi was third with 160 pounds, 6 ounces.

Overall, the 108 anglers caught 928 bass weighing a collective 1,396
pounds. The catch improved today, with 310 bass caught weighing 439 pounds,
as compared to yesterday's 270 bass weighing 402 pounds, 12 ounces.

The B.A.S.S. Federation is a global network of clubs that hold tournaments
but more importantly function as the environmental arm of the
600,000-member Bass Anglers Sportsman Society. Today, more than 2,300 clubs
and 50,000 members belong to clubs affiliated with the Federation program.

Sponsors of the B.A.S.S. National Federation Western Division Championship

Scott Stephenson of Topeka climbs to fifth
Four Kansans in top 20
Oklahoman Continues Lead at Tenn.-Tom Tourn. Nine Anglers will Advance to Semi-Finals

COLUMBUS, Miss., June 17, 1999--Scott Stephenson of Topeka, Kansas moved into fifth place after two five-fish limits in the Central Region B.A.S.S. Federation Divisional tournament. The highest Kansan after the first day was Kevin Sherfey of Harrisonville, Kansas. He climbed to seventh today after finishing in 11th the first day. Mark Moody of Farlington, Kansas is now in tenth and Dennis Forbes of Medicine Lodge, Kansas rounds out the Kansans in the top 20 with an 18th place standing after the first two days.

The fishing got worse today for practically everybody except Oklahoma's Dean Matts, who held onto his lead at the B.A.S.S. Federation Central Divisional that ends here tomorrow on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Despite catching only 2 bass weighing 3 pounds, 15 ounces, Matts holds the lead with a two-day total of seven bass weighing 20 pounds, 6 ounces.

Yesterday's runner-up Danny Paul Thompson of Louisiana remained in that
spot after catching a five-bass tournament limit weighing 7 pounds, 1
ounce. His two day score of nine bass stands at 18 pounds, 12 ounces.

Matts, a 50-year-old general manager of a waste management company, is
making a 20-minute run into another one of the three pools open to this
competition. They include the Columbus, Aberdeen and Aliceville pools of
the Tenn.-Tom Waterway. Such a run can be time consuming, but Matts took
that into consideration when planning his strategy.

"I'm fishing within two minutes of locking through, which takes about
another 20 minutes," he said. "Tomorrow I'm going to cover ever every piece
bit of whatever I can find."

What Matts has found are laydowns positioned on the main river channel
where the bass are holding in favor of cooler water created by the current.
That was yesterday, though.

"Today, there wasn't any cover so I had to go into a slough and do the same
thing, fish any laydowns that I could find."

Matts is using a technique known as pitching. As the name implies, the
technique involves using an underhand, pitch-type cast with a lure intended
to land with precision accuracy at a target. In Matts' case, the targets
are fallen trees.

His bait of choice is a Texas-rigged 3/16-ounce Zoom plastic worm
(black/blue) fished on 20-pound test Stren monofilament line. "The key is
to pitch the bait into the cover and let it stay there a few seconds, then
lift it a couple of times before moving to the next spot."

While Matts and Thompson would both like to win the overall title, their
ultimate objective is to remain atop the lead of their 12-man home state
team. Matts has a 1-pound, 15-ounce lead while Thompson is ahead by 3
pounds, 1 ounce.

The purpose of this tournament is to advance state leaders from the eight
states competing here to next April's Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National
Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. Additionally, one angler from the Zimbabwe
national team on hand here will advance to the National Championship,
considered the semifinals competition for these amateurs aspiring for the
BASS Masters Classic world championship.

In addition to Matts and Thompson, other state leaders are: James Mitchell
(Missouri); Bobby Maynard (Texas); Scott Stevenson (Kansas); Ray Joyner
(Mississippi); David Beattie (Zimbabwe); Timothy Clark (Arkansas); and Kent
Priel (Nebraska).

It is sanctioned by the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.). Daily
weigh-ins begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Columbus East Bank Park.

The tournament limit is five bass that must measure at least 12 inches.
Anglers are assessed a 4-ounce penalty for each dead bass, although
B.A.S.S. has a 98 percent average live release rate in its tournaments.

Today's scorecard consisted of 270 keepers weighing a collective 402
pounds, 12 ounces, as compared to yesterday's score of 348 keepers weighing
554 pounds, 4 ounces. The 5-pound, 3-ounce big bass of the day was caught
by Bryan Scruggs of Raymore, Okla.

This tournament will pay $31,600 to the top placing teams on Friday. The
money is used to fund conservation projects conducted by each respective
state to enhance and protect fishing and water quality. Louisiana's 12-man
team upended the lead from Oklahoma to establish a lead of 143 pounds.
Oklahoma follows closely behind with 142 pounds, 6 ounces.

The final weigh-in begins at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Columbus East Bank Park.

Kevin Sherfey of Harrisonville highest ranking Kansan
Oklahoma Angler Takes B.A.S.S. Lead
on Tenn.-Tom.

COLUMBUS, Miss., June 16, 1999--Kevin Sherfey of Harrisonville, KS is the highest ranking Kansan after the first day of fishing in the B.A.S.S. Federation Central Divisional underway through Friday. He brought in a five fish limit weighing 9 pounds, 10 ounces.

Dean Matts, a 50-year-old amateur angler from Yukon, Okla., has claimed the first-round lead at the B.A.S.S.Federation Central Divisional underway here through Friday. His catch consisted of five bass weighing 16 pounds, 7 ounces. In second place with11 pounds, 11 ounces, is Danny Paul Thompson, of Hammond, La.

The Central Divisional is a grass-roots regional qualifying tournament that
is being held on the Columbus, Aberdeen, and Aliceville pools of the
Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. It is sanctioned by the Bass Anglers
Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.). Daily weigh-ins begin at 2:30 p.m. at the
Columbus East Bank Park.

Matts and Thompson are among 108 anglers competing on 12-man state teams
from Mississippi, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas.
Also on hand is a national team from the south African nation of Zimbabwe.
The contestants qualified for this tournament by first advancing from their
local bass club tournaments to their state teams.

The bass are in a post-spawn pattern, according to the leaders. That means
they have finished spawning in the backwaters and have moved out into their
summertime holding areas. On this fishery, that means simply moving a short
distance to the navigational channel, and most importantly for the bass, to
seek the comfort of cooler water.

Matts, member of the Central Oklahoma Bassmasters, believes he has found
the current and the fish by probing the shallows with a plastic worm. "I'm
fishing in shallow water," he said. "It's so shallow that I can't get my
boat close enough to the fish. I'm casting my bait as far as I can, and if
I could get it even farther, I'd do it."

He continued, "I'm keying on laydowns (trees) that are near the channel.
The fish are holding to the cover with the current bringing in the food."
In other words, the predator bass are lying in ambush to feed as the bait
is swept by their hiding spot.

In a unique twist to tournament bass fishing, the ultimate prize in this
tournament is not necessarily to claim the first place trophy. In the end,
the goal for these amateurs is to place first on their state team and
advance one more step in their quest for bass fishing's holy grail.

From this and four other regional championships, the state champions
advance to the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship set for the
Tennessee River next April in Knoxville. The 46 state champions and five
international champions will compete for five vacancies available to
B.A.S.S. amateurs in the 2000 BASS Masters Classic, widely considered the
sport's world championship event. One state champion from this competition
will represent the Southern Division at the 2000 Classic.

Including Oklahoma's Matts and Thompson of Louisiana, following are the
other state leaders. James Mitchell (Missouri), Alan Bond (Texas), Kevin
Sherfey (Kansas), Kent Priel (Nebraska), Brent St. Clair (Arkansas), Mike
McDonald (Zimbabwe), and Ray Joyner (Mississippi).
The tournament limit is five bass that must measure at least 12 inches.
Anglers are assessed a 4-ounce penalty for each dead bass, although
B.A.S.S. has a 98 percent average live release rate in its tournaments.

Today's scorecard consisted of 348 keepers weighing a collective 554
pounds, 4 ounces. The 5-pound, 15-ounce big bass of the day was caught by
Jay Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla.

This tournament will pay $31,600 to the top placing teams on Friday. The
money is used to fund conservation projects conducted by each respective
state to enhance and protect fishing and water quality. Oklahoma leads the
state standings with a team weight of 88 pounds. Louisiana follows with 76
pounds, 8 ounces. Host state Mississippi is in sixth place with 54 pounds,
12 ounces.

B.A.S.S. Anglers from Eight States & Zimbabwe to Compete on Tenn-Tom Waterway

Nine 'First Place' Awards up for Grabs

COLUMBUS, Miss., June 10, 1999 -- There is plenty of good bass fishing
water on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, but the choices will be narrowed
down to three equally productive areas for 108 anglers converging on the
fishery for the upcoming B.A.S.S. National Chapter Federation's Central
Divisional Tournament.

The Central Divisional is a grass-roots regional qualifying tournament that
will be held on the Aberdeen, Aliceville, and Columbus pools of the
waterway. The official practice is Sunday, June 13, through Tuesday, June
15. The competition begins Wednesday and concludes Friday, June 18. Daily
weigh-ins begin at 2:30 p.m. local time at the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers' Columbus East Bank Park. The public is invited to attend and
admission is free.

In a unique twist to tournament bass fishing, the ultimate prize in this
tournament is not necessarily to claim the first place trophy. In the end,
the goal for these amateurs is to place first on their state team and
advance another step in their quest for bass fishing's world championship.

The contestants qualified for this tournament by advancing through local
bass club tournaments to qualify for their 12-man state team. Represented
in this competition are the states of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas,
Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. A team from the African
nation of Zimbabwe will also compete, including national champion Gerry
Jooste from the town of Banket.

From this and four other divisional championships held nationwide, the
state champions advance to the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship set
for Tennessee next April to compete for the five positions available to
B.A.S.S. amateurs in the 2000 BASS Masters Classic, widely considered the
sport's world championship. One state champion from this competition will
represent the Central Division at the Classic. Others will come from the
Eastern, Western, Southern, and Northern divisions comprising the B.A.S.S.
Federation. Of the international contingent, Zimbabwe's Jooste is a veteran
of three Classics and four National Championships, including the most
recent held last May on the Red River near Shreveport, La.

Columbus, Aliceville, and Aberdeen were produced by a series of locks and
dams built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make the Tombigbee River
suitable for commercial barge navigation. The resulting Tenn-Tom Waterway
now connects the Tennessee River to Mobile, Ala., and the Gulf of Mexico.

Comparable to similar Corps projects along the Gulf Coast, the Tenn-Tom
created a vibrant bass fishery where one was previously non-existent. The
locks and dams inundated thousands of acres of lowland bayous and river
bottom, creating instant habitat for the entire aquatic food chain. In all,
the three pools open to fishing for the Central Divisional encompass 21,321
surface acres and roughly 350 miles of shoreline.

All three lakes are similar in the types of structure they provide with the
exception of Aliceville, which has hydrilla in the lower end. Each lake has
plenty of riprap installed by the Corps. Otherwise, there are gravel and
sand bars along with the old river channel and its natural structure
consisting of submerged brushpiles and rotten timber. Columbus even has a
few isolated lily pad fields.

The tournament limit is five bass that must measure at least 12 inches.
Anglers are assessed a 4-ounce penalty for each dead bass, although
B.A.S.S. has a 98 percent average live release rate in its tournaments.

This tournament pays $32,200 in awards to the teams with $11,000 going to
the first place team. The money is used to fund conservation projects
conducted by each respective state to enhance and protect fishing and water
quality.

The B.A.S.S. Federation is a global network of clubs that hold tournaments
but more importantly function as the environmental arm of the
600,000-member Bass Anglers Sportsman Society. Today, more than 2,800 clubs
and 50,000 members belong to clubs affiliated with the federation program.
