Winds: South @ 8 MPH (increased during the day)
 Arrived approx 1055 hrs. Caught 2 - 10 inch rainbows & 3
      - 12 inch rainbows
(lost three others before got my limit of 5). Was using Berkley
      Sunrise
Power Eggs & Berkley Rainbow Powerbait Nuggets. Bait had
      to be in exactly
the right spot or they would not hit. Others caught some using
      cheese and
corn. Water is Seep Stream is (estimate) 4 inches lower than
      when I went the
 beginning of the month.
No Luck in the Outlet area, more little more water
coming out of spillwaythan previously. Did see one LARGE GIZZARD SHAD get caught &
      person used it
in an attempt to catch catfish with no luck.

Walleye - Spent 4 hours fishing on Easter Eve. 1 Walleye
7+ lbsLots of fisherman very few walleye being caughtI had a
few more hard hits but they didn't stick to my Rapala. Not much
activity yet. A few nets in place from our lovely Egg collection
crew. Does anyone understand the issues with netting Walleye
year after year on a given lake? I have caught less and less
big fish since this process was put in place at Hillsdale. Anyone
else have a opinion? Tom Krokstrom March 28, 2005 - Cheney
      - JUST GOT NEWS OF A NEW COURTESY DOCK 8' WIDE BY
40' LONG POSITIONED IN THE CENTER OF THE EASTSIDE BOAT RAMP AT
CHENEY. I THINK THIS IS BEING BUILT BY DONATIONS ONLY. SOUNDS
LIKE IT WILL BE INSTALLED SOMETIME IN THE SUMMER OF 2005. THIS
WILL BE A TERMENDUS BENEFIT FOR ALL SIZES OF BOATS. March 27, 2005 - Harvey
County East (3/24) - Fished at the spillway from 0800
until 1430 did not get bit until 1200. Caught two Saugeyes one
      18 and the other 21 on 1/16 chartreuse jig with a orange/green
power bait twister .Had to use the ultra light rod with 4 lb
line slow and deep to get anything to bite. Saw two other guys
with ultra light rigs get Saugeyes both over 21 long. Mark March 25, 2005 - Answer
to looking for a special hook -I cannot visualize
the exact style hook you are looking for. I imagine it uses wire
for the weedless feature and has weight on the hook shank. It
might be possible to use the currently available weedless hooks
and purchase a Do-it mold with which you can mold the weight
over the hook. Check at www.do-itmolds.com or zeiners.safeshopper.com.
Best of luck. Dean B. March 23, 2005 - Looking
for a special hook - Several years ago, Eagle Claw
manufactured a weedless worm hook (similar totheir current weedless worm hook) but this hook was weighted.
The (elongated weight) was part of the hook, on the shaft. Again,
it was like current EC weedless hooks, made with the wire weed
guard, but it had a weight built in.
I believe they went off the market about 10 years
ago. I don't know if anyone on this board would know where I
could find some, or if anyone would like to sell some. I have
checked ebay and various hook sites on the web, but have had
no luck. I can be reached at jeff.herndon@kake.com.
      Thanks. March 23, 2005 - Some
general tips - cats are shallow in upper ends and
coves they bite shad gizzards and shrimp this time of year .
i dont fish for the spawning walleye ,,they can be caught trolling
or wading when it gets a little warmer alot of walleye get snagged
on the dam, why mess with there reporduction cycle when u can
catch them in a couple weeks after the spawn........ p.s there are nothern pike in kingman state lake
that can be caught now on live shiners or minnows fishin pal jer March 21, 2005 - Walleye

at Cheney - MR- Hey i am back from Iraq! Just wanted
to thank everyone for the words of encouragement. Went out to
the dam at Cheney on Thursday, caught three smaller males in
about 3 hours. Not very productive but was nice to get out and
catch some pre-spawn fish. good luck! March 19, 2005 - Hillsdale
      - Went to Hillsdale March 13th for crappie, fishing
in the area of the Antioch boat ramp, and after 3 hours only
caught 1 12" fish. I could see them using the depth finder
suspended @ 10-14 ft in 16 ft of water. I was fishing jigs right
in their face but couldn't get another volenteer. Tried about
6 colors. Decided to go up the channel a ways for cats and had
my first fish on 3 min after anchoring. Caught 7 more over the
next 1 1/2 hours using night crawlers fishing the channel about
10 ft (on the bottom). Largest was about 2.5 lbs, smallest about
      a pound. Mike March 18, 2005 - Comment

page Editor's Note - I was surprised with the
new design also. I had seen it earlier and thought they would
improve it. We will continue our reports in the same format that
we've had for years. Each of the five regions will continue to
be on the same page. The state lets us use their reports, but
it is certainly more difficult now to update our pages. Let your
friends know they can visit kansasangler.com and see the reports
in an easier to use format. March 11, 2005 - Answer
to Cheney Question on Wipers from 3/11 - El Dorado Report and
Question on Walleye Eggs for bait - I just read the
Kansas magazine, and in it they have an article on Wipers. 1)
I am not a biologist. 2) hybrids such as the wiper can't mate
with another wiper. 3) i imagine that like the saugeye they would
make false spawning runs. look for wipers to head up river if
that is the case. on another topic. I went to Eldorado on
the 6th of march. Yeah it was windy but also a lot of fun. caught
a 13-15 inch smallmouth. I couldn't get an accurate measurement.
he was all curled up. 2 white bass or wipers. all of these were
released. 2 too small walleye (released) and a 20 and a 22 inch
female walleye's (supper). my son & I were trolling new crank
baits in blue stem for the walley and the white's/wipers and
the smalley was on the west end of the dam. i also chewed up my reverse trying to pull a disabled
boat off of the rocks outside shady creek marina. 926 dollars
for reverse gear and clutch dog. ins. won't pay cause they feel
it was mechanical(read as maintenance). ought to be a clause
for good samaritan damage. i also hope that the disabled boat's
problem was more than the kill switch getting bumped. that would
be pricelessboat ought to be ready sometime this week. so i'm gonna try and
get some more of those prespawn hogs.
i do have a question, are walleye eggs good
bait for catfish later in the year?happy fishing and good luck with the wipers.

Cook, Four Lake Guides - El Dorado crappie fishing was
really slow saturday. We found the fish but could only get a
few to do there part. Sunday catfishing at Kaw on the other hand
was very successful. The wind would not let us fish the river
ledges on the main lake. Couldn't get the anchors to hold. But
where we could fish we well on some nice size blues and even
caught some small channels all ready. Mike Cook March 14, 2005 - Cheney
-Went to Cheney Lake Saturday afternoon. Arrived at
Fish Cove at about 4 p.m. Conditions were very windy and as a
result I was only there for about two and a half hours. The only
fish I caugt was a small drum. I did see several fish jumping
in the area, however. Water was very murky. This was the first
time I had been to Cheney in a couple of years, so I was happy
to get back. March 14, 2005 - El

Question on Wipers - WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS DONE
WELL IN MAY ON PRE-SPAWN WIPERS? I WENT OUT ONCE IN EARY MAY
AND DID WELL ON WIPERS. WOULD LIKE TO GET OUT MORE THIS MAY AND

BE A TOUGH TIME, THE LAKE IS AROUND 4 FT. LOW AND THE FISH
ARE STARTING TO STAGE IN PRE SPAWN. ROCK BLUFF AREAS IN 15 TO 20 FT. IN FRONT OF
RUSH CREEK FOR SMALLLMOUTH BASS, USING 3 INCH TUBE JIGS, WATERMELON COLORS WITH FLAKE. SLOW DRAG
THE TUBES DOWN THE LEDGES. IF YOUR REALLY UPTO CATCHING SOME FISH, TRY
THE DAM FROM 10PM TO DAWN FOR THE SPAWNING WALLEYE. USE 3INCH RAPALA MINOWS CAST DOWN THE LENGTH
OF THE DAM. TIGHT LINE CHUCK March 10, 2005 - Directions
to Kanoplis Seep Stream - I-70 westbound from Topeka to exit 238.
Turn left (south) after getting off I-70 West go south to KS-140,
turn right (west) onto KS-140 and go west until you see
junction to the south (left) of KS-141.
Take KS-141 across the dam, left turn on paved road to Kanopolis
      Information
Office. Left turn to the Outlet parking lot area.
Park there and walk down the concrete to the seep stream. You
      might also
park at the upper end of the lot and walk upstream and fish some
      of the
 beaver dam areas.
If you have waders or hip boots, you can fish behind the cattails

      - Wilson - Jack Hoskinson Madd Jack Striper Guide - Dave Ford and Jay
Rapp display stripers they caught on Wilson. It was a fantastic
day to be on the water today and the fish agreed. The stripers
were short hitting allot but we still managed to get 9 stripers
to the boat with a 20# as the largest. We missed at least twice
that many more. We were pulling live bait, shad and black saltys
in shallow water, 3 to 7 feet in the backs of coves on the upper
end of the lake. Looks like the bigger stripers are going to
make a good showing this year! Madd Jack
 March 2, 2005 - Question
on Cheney Walleye - Has anyone heard if the walleye
are being caught at Cheney off the damn yet? Gotta be getting
close, but this cold snap could push them back another week or
so? I am debating if I will even go there, but nice to hear if
the fish are moving in or not. Thanks KGT March 1, 2005 - Thanks
for answer to Grand Lake Question - My thanks to the
fellow that replied to my Grand Lake question. I'm assuming the
jig colors are black and blue? Or black and black?
 Again thank you,
 Ol' Mike
 February 28, 2005 - Answer
to Grand Lake Question from Feb. 11 - I will be at
Table Rock this year during this time, but. I traditionally have
done well in the back of elk river on channel swing banks. 3
lures (2 typical, 1 different for these parts): clown colored
      rogue or pointer 100 (10 15 second pauses); bl/bl 5/16
oz jig (heavy line for slow fall to bottom then deadstick for
      10-15 count); LV-500 lucky craft rat'l trap (clown color)<fish
as if slow rolling a spinnerbait>. Last year a hot lure was
a bandit 200 or wiggle wartthese 2 lures accounted for a number
of early March tournaments from Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock,
and the early season BFL at Grandeach year is different though. If Elk River gets hit pretty good by others, I
like to fish mid-lake coves (north sides) and use the rogue along
sides of docks, jig around wood. February 28, 2005 - Watershed
      - 2/26/05Me and another friend went out looking to try and catch some
      crappie saturday
afternoon. After an hour of casting small jigs and road runners
      and not
catching anything we decided to break out our baitcaster's and
      we tied on some
bass lures. To our surprise we started catching bass at a decent
      rate, and
they were all coming right off the bank in very shallow water.
      We ended up
with 14 bass ranging from 2-3 pounds, nothing big but, a really
      nice day none
the less. The bass were caught on a flipping tube and a strike
      king bitsy
 bug.
Good Luck to all. The cajun up above is still forsale.thanks,
 travis

27, 2005 - Wilson - Jack Hoskinson Madd Jack Striper Guide - Anglers are Jay
Rapp and John Kelly, the fish are 6 to 8 lbs. I finally got
on the water today (Feb. 26) and found the stripers to be willing
and aggressive. With in 10 minutes of putting out lines we had
the first striper in the boat. While the stripers today were
not as large as I would like, between 5 and 8 lbs, will still
had a great time and caught allot of fish. We were fishing live
bait, black salty's and bucktails on planer boards in 7 to 3
      feet of water!
Lots of bank fishermen out today, we also say several of them
catching stripers. The stripers are in there normal early spring
pattern in the backs of the creeks, coves and river where the
water is a little warmer. It looks like it is going to be a great
      spring!

 February 22, 2005 - Just
Dreaming - WENT TO THE SPORT BOAT AND TRAVEL SHOW
OVER THE WEEKEND. HIRED A GUIDE FOR STRIPER FISHING AT BEAVER
FOR JUNE. LOOKED AT ALL THE NEW BOATS AND EQUIPMENT AT THE SHOW.
THEN MONDAY NIGHT ON THE OUTDOOR CHANNEL, (SATELLITE) I WATCHED
MONDAY NIGHT FISHING FOR 4HRS. STRIGHT IN THE BASEMENT. THEN
I TOOK A BREAK AND HEADED TO THE GARAGE AND TOOK THE COVER OFF
THE BOAT. SAT IN THE CHAIR TURNED ON THE ELETRONICS AND STARTED
DREAMING OF ALL THOSE STRIPER AND WIPERS. THEN I HEARD THE DOOR
OPEN AND I LOOKED AND IT WAS MY WIFE STAIRING AT ME. SHE ASKED
WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING OUT HERE IN THE GARAGE IN THE BOAT?
I DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY. SO I SAID NOTHING. SO, THE WIFE SAID
WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE. YOU NEED TO GO SEE A PHYCOLOGIST. MAYBE
SO? CAN'T WAIT FOR SPRING. MARK. February 21, 2005 - Kanopolis
      - Feb. 20th- Kanopolis- I made it to the lake at about
1:00 p.m. In the past I haven't had much luck catching early
crappie at this lake but I was determined to catch a crappie.
I started off at the brush piles around the tower. The wind was
blowing stead and the waves were rocking the Tracker pretty good
so staying on top of the brush piles was tough. I started off
with two 1/8 ounce jigs in yellow and chartuse. With the wind
blowing I couldn't feel the jigs and the brush without getting
hung up. I switched to a 1/2 ounce bell sinker on the bottom
of the line and two jigs above. About the third twitch of the
jig and I had a 12 inch crappie. With the bite comming so quick
I thought I would fill the boat, boy was I mistaken. I fished
for another two hours without a strike. The wind had come up
a little more so I went to another part of the lake. There are
some brush piles off of Lotus (sp) point. They start in 16 feet
of water and go all the way down to 25 feet. The fish there didn't
like my bell sinker set up but did start hitting a 3/8 ounce
jig with a white sassy shad. With this much weight I could feel
the brush and work the jig in and out and around it. I ended
up catching five more crappie but three of them were about 8
inches and too small to keep. All of the fish came out of the
bruch in 23 feet of water. MAC February 21, 2005 - Clinton
      - Feb. 18th- Clinton Lake- On Feb. 18th I went to
Clinton lake at about 3:00 p.m. The sun was out with a light
breeze and about 50 degrees. This is the first chance I've had
to get out and the first time to fish Clinton. The water temp.
was 39 degrees, out in the main lake, and 41 degrees in the bays.
On Friday I found fish out in front of the marina. There is a
large drop off and the bait fish were stacked up on top. I used
a pair of 1/8 ounce jigs and jigged them around the pods of bait
fish. After about a half hour, with no bites, I started swimming
the jigs above the bait and caught several nice white bass in
the next hour. The fish preferred yellow or bright green and
ignored the white jigs. Friday night a front moved in and cause
the wind to come up and the rain. I went out about noon on the
19th, found all kinds of bait fish but couldn't get a strike.

 February 12, 2005 - Butler County
Pond - Went to the heated dock at Marion County saturday
morning, only stayed 45 minutes, so many people there didn't
hardly have room to set down. Loaded up and went back home and
went to a decent sized pond that we knew had crappie and bass
in it. Hadn't been there more than 5 minutes and we had already
caught 2 crappie. With three of us we ended up catching 5 crappie
and 5 bass. Most were caught on a chartruse slider grub with
a red head. The two biggest bass were only a couple of pounds
but, it felt good to be catching fish and surprising to since,
it just snowed last week alittle, but it goes to show you that
if you work at it you can catch fish all year from farm ponds.
      Also an
interesting side note is that some of the fish we caught were
less than a foot off of the bank and couldn't of been in more
than a couple of feet of water. Also there were 2 turtles in
the water already. Guess it's starting to get close. Still have
the boat for sale at the top as well if anyone is interested.

Hoskinson Madd Jack Striper Guide - I went to the
dam yesterday to see how much ice was left and the dam boat ramp
was ice free. It was a hazy day so I don't know how far west
it is thawed but the dam area is fishable by boat. Of course the temps have dropped again and some
ice may come back but this late in the season I doubt if it will
stay too long. Prior to the temperature dropping on sunday we
got over 1 inch of rain in the Wilson area. The Saline is running
at about its double rate which means the lake will get some much
needed water. Currently we are 2. 5 feet low but with the
river flowing that should change over the next few days. With the lake 2 feet or lower than conservation
some of my early spring spots are very shallow or exposed, so
the water coming in gets me pumped up and ready to hit the lake
as soon as possible. Fish-On Madd Jack February 2, 2005 - Kingman

Went out Tuesday looking for all the sunshine that
was supposed to happen,at least very little wind. Got to the Seep Stream about 1130
      hrs and there
was only one other person visible fishing the Seep Stream for
      trout. Using
 # 5 Rapala Original Floater in Firetiger, Berkley PowerBait in
      Rainbow &
 Flor. Red caught my limit. Sizes were 3 @ 11 inches & 2 @
      9 inches. Did
hook & lose several that would be luck to make 7 inches,
      but was forewarned
by the above information. Saw several larger than 12 inches lost
      (red
salmon egg was bait) & couple of others w/ near limits (4
      - used PowerBait -
if floated by me) and limits (5 - bait unknown) of trout. One
      person told
me of area upstream where there looked to be a 100 or so in shallow
      water,
but they would not bite anything he threw at them.
As was leaving while crossing the dam, noticed several people
      ice fishing on
the south side of the lake (far too much open water visiable
      for my money)).

 January 19, 2005 - Grand Lake
spoonbill question - Need some help. I'm going down
to Grand Lake this spring to get in on the spoonbill run. I've
never gone after spoonbill before and wondered if someone who
has could advise me as to what kind of tackle I will need. Type
of reel, length of rod, test weight of line, how to rig the weights
and things like that. Any info will be appreciated. You can reply
here or email me at ksfishinfarmer@yahoo.com

 January 17, 2005 - Kanoplis
      - Fished kanopolis sat. and sun. Fished mostly around
tower harber cove. The Walleye and whites were biting pretty
good. During the mid-day the bite seemed to be better near the
deeper water 25' to 27' deep. A little better bite in the evening
and a little shallower 17' to 20' deep. Good ice all over the
cove aprox. 6" or 7" of clear ice. My depth finder
really helped find the fish. Biting fish are usually cruising
right next to the bottom. Most of the walleye were from 14 1/2"
to 17" in length. Also saw a few wipers taken. Try small
castmasters or small white slabs. Good luck.Tight Lines, Ks.Fisher

      Seep Stream - Conditions @ 0828 hrs CST @ Salina:clear below 12000 ft
 Temp: 38 F
 Wind Chill: 31 F
 Barometric Pressure: 30.04
 Dewpoint: 34 F
 Humidity: 86 %
 Wind: SSW @ 10 MPH
Should have waited until after 1200 hrs before going out. Nothing
      until the
afternoon when finally managed to get my limit. 4 @ 11 inches
      (1/2 lb size)
& the 5th was 13 inches. Did notice a couple of dead trout
      floating about
so am unsure of what did them in (water gin clear & COLD
      so that was not the
reason - only problem with water is there is not enough in the
      Seep Stream.)

 January 13, 2005 - Ice
Fishing Answer - I usually prefer to find my own fish
through the ice by staying away from the other fisherman and
doing alot of work with my depth finder. With a flat puck type
transducer, you can often read through the ice without drilling
first. I use dish soap or even just water to make a good seal
betwwen the transducer and the ice. At wilson it seems that the
fish often stay near the old river channel. The best spots seem
to be the breaks on the outside bends or any structure or points
extending into or near the channel. Also don,t overlook the saddle
areas between two channels or where two bends come close together.
I prefer hard bottom but this usually isn,t rock. Sometimes when
there is a limited amount of safe ice you will be forced to fish
the same area as other fishermen. An often overlooked trick to
give you a good advantage over the other fisherman is to chum
the holes you are fihing. Usually some fresh cut bait will do
the trick. Tipping your spoons and jigs with a small minnow head,
eye or tail can improve your odds as well. I also like a dropper
rig when things are slow. This rig consists of a spoon 4"
to 10" above a smaller offering. I like small jigs with
very small plastic tails but I am also experimenting with some
small hand tied teasers. The spoon acts as an attractor to draw
the fish in while the dropper seals the deal. Good luck! Let
us know if any of these tips do you any good. Be safe and stay
      warm. Ks.Fisher

 January 11, 2005 - Wilson - Fished
Wilson Lake. Decent ice on hell creek and horse shoe bend. Caught
a couple sripers 23" and 27", and a few nice whites.
Bite was slow, most fish came on a dropper rig with a 1/8 spoon
and a 1/64 dropper jig, also some on small tubes. Looks like
the ice will only get better by next weekend, but still lots
of thin stuff, so be careful and check the thickness often. Ks.Fisher

 January 10, 2005 - Wilson - Fished
wilson 1/9/05. Found decent ice at hell creek and horse shoe
bend. Bite was slow but managed a couple stripers 24" and
27" also a few really nice whites. Saw several white pearch
as well. Most of our fish came on a dropper rig consisting of
a 1/8 or 1/4 oz. spoon with a 1/64 oz. jig tipped with small
plastic tails. Yea, the stripers actually went for the tiny jig!
Looks like the ice will only get better by next weekend. Still
a lot of thin spots so be careful and check the thickness often
when venturing out. Tight Lines - Ks.Fisher
