Texan, Gary Klein Wins $100,000 in Memphis,
Wal-Mart FLW Tour Bass Event
MEMPHIS, Tenn.-May 22, 1999--Gary Klein of Weatherford,
Texas, pocketed $100,000 by winning the fifth event of the 1999
Wal-Mart FLW Tour bass fishing series on the Mississippi River
at Memphis. The tournament, which features the world's top professional
bass anglers competing for a share of a $471,500 purse, is stop
number five of seven in the $4 million series, the most
lucrative in fishing history.
Klein, fishing from the Wrangler boat in the final round,
survived two earlier rounds of competition and 165 other anglers
en
route to the Wal-Mart FLW Tour victory. The professional angler
landed
5 bass, weighing 22 pounds, 3 ounces in the final round of competition
to outdistance the four other anglers competing in the final
round of
the professional division and clinch the title.
"It was just one of those days where everything worked
out. I was
on a streak where I could do no wrong," Klein said.
Klein caught his winning limit flipping a 1/2 ounce Rattleback
jig in 12-14 feet of water 60 miles up river near Tunica, Mississippi.
Fishing from the Timex boat, Chuck Economou of Palm Bay, Florida,
took second place with a championship round 5-bass catch weighing

pounds, 2 ounces, good for $35,000.
Rounding out the top five in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour's professional
division were: (3) Mark Rose of Marion, Arkansas, (Coleman Boat),
four
bass, 15 pounds, 15 ounces (4) Ken Cook of Meers, Oklahoma, (Uniroyal
Boat), four bass, 10 pounds, and (5) Craig Powers of Rockwood,
Tennessee, (Fujifilm Boat), four bass, 5 pounds, 15 ounces.
The win gives Klein an automatic berth in the year-end Wal-Mart
FLW Tour Championship, presented by CITGO, September 22-25, 1999,
in
Wagoner, Oklahoma, where the winner will receive $250,000, the
largest
first place cash prize in sport fishing.
David Walker of Cannon, Kentucky, is leading the Land O'Lakes
Angler of the Year points race with 245 points. Points are awarded
to
anglers after the first two days of competition based on ranking
at
that time. Craig Powers of Rockwood, TN is following in second
place
with 244 points. Alton Jones of Waco, TX, is in third with 233
points,
followed by Roland Martin of Clewiston, FL, with 232 points,
and Ben
Lee of Columbia, S.C., 219 points. The Land O'Lakes Angler of
the Year
will be featured on a special edition box of Wheaties later in
the
year.
The highest-finishing Ranger boat owner in the tournament
will
qualify to enter the $3.5 million Ranger M1 Millennium tournament,
the
richest bass event in history, with a $1 million first-place
cash
prize at stake. The Ranger owner who catches the largest bass
in each
division over the course of the season will also qualify for
the
Ranger Millennium tournament scheduled for November of this year.
Robert Vogelsang of Jessup, Maryland, won the co-angler division
competition which concluded Friday with a five bass catch totaling
16
pounds, 13 ounces. He collected $15,000 for the win. Danny Correia
of
Marlboro, Massachusetts, landed a 7 pound, 2 ounce bass to earn
big
bass honors for the event. He received $1,000 from Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola will award $5,000 to the angler landing the biggest
bass
during the 1999 tour.
The fourth year Wal-Mart FLW Tour is the most lucrative bass
fishing series in the history of the sport. Highlights of the
1999
tour include: four $471,500 qualifying tournaments, each with
a
$100,000 first prize; the $641,000 Wal-Mart Open featuring a
$150,000
first place prize; and competitive angling's richest tournament,
the
$1 million Forrest Wood Open, June 23-26, in Detroit, Michigan.
The
event pays the winner $200,000.
The Wal-Mart FLW Tour is televised on ESPN and ESPN 2. The
Memphis Wal-Mart FLW Tour tournament is scheduled to air on ESPN,
Saturday, June 5, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. EDT. All tournaments operated
by
Operation Bass are catch and release events. Uniroyal will donate
$25,000 to the Children's Miracle Network at the end of the season
if
the Wal-Mart FLW Tour maintains a 98 percent live release rate.
After
two events, the Wal-Mart FLW Tour's live release rate is over
99
percent.

Five Pro Anglers Move to Final Round
in Wal-Mart FLW Tour, Memphis Bass Tourney; $100,000 to the Winner
MEMPHIS, Tenn.-May 21, 1999--After three days
of competition, five professional anglers have advanced to the
final
round of professional fishing action in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour
bass
tournament being held on the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee.
The event features a $471,500 purse and one of sport fishing's
largest
first place cash prizes - $100,000. The tournament will culminate
Saturday at the Mud Island amphitheater, with weigh-in activities
beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The five anglers making the final cut include: (1) Chuck Economou
of Palm Bay, Florida; (2) Gary Klein of Weatherford, Texas; (3)
Craig
Powers of Rockwood, Tennessee; (4) Mark Rose of Marion, Arkansas;
(5)
Ken Cook of Meers, Oklahoma.
In Saturday's final round, the five professional anglers will
fish from identical Ranger Comanche fishing machines, and each
competitor will be paired with a camera crew from ESPN. The
angler/boat designation is as follows: Chuck Economou/Timex,
Gary
Klein/Wrangler, Craig Powers/Fujifilm, Mark Rose/Coleman, and
Ken
Cook/Uniroyal.
The angler catching the heaviest limit of bass for the day
will
be the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Pro Division winner and receive $100,000.
Second place will pay $35,000; third place $20,000; fourth place
$16,000; and fifth place $14,000.
In other fishing action, the co-angler competition has ended
with
Robert Vogelsang of Jessup, Maryland, winning first place with
a catch
of 16 pounds, 13 ounces. He received $15,000 for the win.
The winning pro and co-angler in the tournament receive automatic
berths in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship, presented by CITGO,
to
be held September 22-25, 1999, on Ft. Gibson Lake in Wagoner,
Oklahoma, where the first prize in the pro division is $250,000,
the
largest first place cash prize in competitive fishing.
The $4 million, 1999 Wal-Mart FLW Tour is the most lucrative
fishing series in history. The sixth stop on the tour is the
Forrest
Wood Open, June 23-26, in Detroit, Michigan. The event has a
$1 million
cash purse and a first place prize of $200,000.

Ten Anglers Advance to Second Round
in Wal-Mart FLW Tour, Memphis Bass Event
MEMPHIS, Tenn.-May 20, 1999--Ten anglers have
made the first round cut to advance to Friday's second round
of
professional fishing action in the fifth event of the $471,500
Wal-Mart FLW Tour being held on Mississippi River at Memphis.
The
world's best bass anglers are competing for a first place cash
prize
of $100,000 in the fifth tournament of seven on the tour that
in 1999
will award anglers $4 million.
The 10 world class anglers, together with the remaining 10
co-anglers, will compete Friday, for one day, with the top five
professionals, based on Friday's catch weight, advancing to Saturday's
final round. In addition to the $100,000 first place cash, the
winning
professional and co-angler receive berths in the Wal-Mart FLW
Tour
Championship, presented by CITGO, September 22-25, 1999, on Ft.
Gibson
Lake in Wagoner, Oklahoma, where the winning professional will
receive
the largest cash award in fishing - $250,000. Co-angler competition
will end Friday with the winner receiving $15,000.

Friday and Saturday's weigh-ins will be held at Mud Island
Riverfront amphitheater. Friday's weigh-in will begin at 5:00
p.m.
Saturday's activities will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the weigh-in
beginning at 3:30 p.m.
All tour events are scheduled to be televised on ESPN

Star Angler, Brauer, Takes First Round

in Wal-Mart FLW Tour, Memphis Event
MEMPHIS, Tenn.-May 19, 1999--Superstar angler
Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Missouri, landed a five bass limit
weighing
24 pounds, 7 ounces to lead the 165-man professional division
after
the first round of competition in the fifth event of the $4 million,
1999 Wal-Mart FLW Tour event being held on the Mississippi River.
The
world's best bass fishermen are competing for a share of a $471,500
cash purse, the largest for a bass tournament in Tennessee history,
and $100,000 for first place.
Brauer, the 1998 Wal-Mart FLW Tour points champion, is attempting
to make the 10-man, first round cut, determined at the end of
Thursday's fishing. Brauer was the first angler to grace the
cover of
the Wheaties cereal box for his 1998 tour finish.
The top 10 professional and 10 co-anglers, based on total
weight
after the first two days of fishing, will advance to the second
round
of action on Friday. At the conclusion of Friday's fishing, the
co-angler competition is completed and the pro field is cut to
five.
Saturday's final round of fishing will determine the winner of
the
Wal-Mart FLW Tour Pro Division, based on total catch weight for
that
day. In addition to $100,000, the winning pro (and co-angler)
receive
a berth in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship, presented by CITGO,
September 22-25, 1999, on Ft. Gibson Lake in Wagoner, Oklahoma.
The Pro Division leader at the end of Thursday's action will
receive 75 points in the Land O'Lakes Angler of the Year race.
The
professional angler accumulating the most points through the
second
day of the Forrest Wood Open, sixth stop on the tour, will be
featured
on a nationally-distributed, special edition box of Wheaties.
David
Walker of Cannon, Kentucky, is leading the points race going
into
Thursday's action.
Ben Kron, Jr. of Maryville, Tennessee, is leading the 165-man
co-angler field with a 5 bass catch weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces.
Co-anglers are competing for a share of $71,500, with $15,000
going to
the winner.

World's Best Anglers Set for Memphis,
Fourth FLW Tour Stop; Richest Bass Tournament in State History

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. - May 3, 1999--The world's
best professional bass anglers are headed for Memphis, Tennessee,
to
compete in the fourth event of Operation Bass' $4 million, 1999
Wal-Mart FLW Tour, May 19-22, 1999, on the Mississippi River.
The
tournament is the fourth stop of seven for the tour that is the
most
lucrative competitive bass fishing series in history, and the
richest
tournament in Tennessee history.
The $471,500 Mississippi River event, presented by Evinrude
Outboards(R), will take place on Mud Island and features 300
world
class anglers (150 professional and 150 co-anglers) fishing in
a
four-day, elimination competition, with a $100,000 first place
cash
award at stake in the Professional Division.
The all-star field of anglers, comprised of the sport's biggest
names, will compete the first two days for one of 10 slots (10
pros
and 10 co-anglers) available in the second round of fishing action.
On
day three, the 10 pros and 10 co-anglers start over, fishing
one day
for the heaviest limit. The top five pros, based on total weight,
advance to the final round of competition on Saturday. Co-angler
competition ends at the conclusion of day three. First prize
in the
co-angler competition is $15,000.
In addition to $100,000, the winner, from each division earns
a
berth in the $450,000 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship, presented
by
CITGO, September 22-25, 1999, on Ft. Gibson Lake at Wagoner,
Oklahoma,
where the winner receives the largest first place cash award
in pro
angling -- $250,000.

The third and final days of each event feature the top pros
fishing from the new Ranger Comanche fishing machines. The boats
represent the newest advances in craftsmanship and technology,
and
feature dynamic, NASCAR-like, sponsor-centered styling from bow
to
stern.
All tour events are scheduled to be televised on ESPN
approximately two weeks after the tournament. The Wal-Mart FLW
