May 30, 01- Truman - Fished all day Found Crappie 8 to 10 ft. in 15 to 20 ft water. Fishing was slow but if you kept at it the fish were catchable. Went from tree to tree and fished a jig and minnow. Yellow tube with white tail tip with a minnow. Tried just a minnow no luck. Tried just a jig no luck tried other colors no luck. Sure beat working and had a great time weather was great except for the wind. But then we all like fishing a point in the wind when you cant make the boat stay any where close to a good spot. Ain't it great. I love it. See you on the water. Skeeterdriver

Still not much for change, getting good rains here through the night, will bring that water level up into the bushes.  If it  gets in the bushes be sure to flip those newly covered bushes with a Team Supreme Rage jig.  I am using the crawdad color tipped with a tequiila sunrise craw. Also try flipping a Texas rigged worm or tubes in the same bushes and in submerged trees. Try running a buzz bait along the bushes also. We have had some very windy afternoons here, try tossing a white spinner bait up on those windy banks. Need to try the Bass Hound spinnerbaits, they work great, run true, a good friend of mine builds them. Catching some smallmouths on grubs on flat gravel points using a 4" smoke grub on 1/4 oz. jighead.  Fishing has been good, we are catching numbers of fish, and having a great time on the lake. In the Kimberling City, Baxter, Campbell Point areas, I am using some deep diving crankbaits like DD 22's, or Fat Free Shads, chartreuse and blue or shad patterns, on the main lake and secondary points. I am catching bigger fish on the crankbaits, but not as many.  Rigging is still the most consistent bite, I have found, although, I have moved in a little from the 20'-25' range in to the 15'-12' range.  Move your boat inand out of this depth range to find those scattered fish.  I am Carolina rigging a Team Supreme tournament fry in Root Beer & green flake & in watermelon, green pumpkin, pumpkin...natural colors,   with 1/2 oz. weight on 12 lb. test line, and on my split shot rig, I am using 6-8 lb. test line, with 3/16 oz. weight (for those of you who have emailed me.)   On your rigs try- Team Supreme french fries, Zoom centipedes, or 5"-6" lizards.     We are also catching them on 3"-5" single tail grubs, in smoke, salt & pepper, watermelon red flake or green pumpkin with a 1/4 oz. darter head.  Fish on the same banks, swimming the grub 5'-10' deep, also if you see suspended fish on your locater, swim the grub in 25'-35' of water, also at the 5'-10' depth range.  Topwater bite picking up now that the spawn is over. I am fishing Zara Spooks and red fins, over the tops of submerged timber on bluff ends, main lake, & secondary points. Wigglewarts, in crawdad colors, also working some on the overcast days, in the same areas.

In the Upper James River top water bite is picking up, early and late, or on cloudy days.  There has been some top water bite early and late, on bluff ends & timbered points.  I am using Storms Jointed Thunder Stick's, Chug Bugs, Red Fins, & Spooks. Fish the gravel flats next to channel swings or drops, that are 8'-15' deep, and that drop off  into 20'-25', or more. Watch for shad on and around these flats.  In the Long Creek area-from the mouth of Cricket Creek on up, fish the tree rows next to the channels, with deep diving crankbaits noted abve.

I just got hooked up with Falcon rods and I got to tell you they are great!  Be sure to check out the Cara series and Expert series rods when looking for you next rod. Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service

WATER LEVEL - 915.28 Normal Pool 915' Pool last year on this date 905.9 WATER TEMP. 70-75

Not much has changed this week except the water level rising. If it continues to rise and gets in the bushes be sure to flip those newly covered bushes with a Team Supreme Rage jig. I am using the crawdad color tipped with a tequiila sunrise craw. Toss in a Texas rigged worm in the same bushes and in submerged trees. Fishing has been good, we are catching numbers of fish, and having a great time on the lake. Kimberling City, Baxter, Campbell Point areas, fish are off the beds and can be caught on main lake and secondary points, split shotting and Carolina rigging. I am Carolina rigging a Team Supreme tournament fry in Root Beer & green flake & other similar natural colors, with 1/2 oz. weight on 12 lb. test line, and on my split shot rig, I am using 6-8 lb. test line, with 3/16 oz. weight (for those of you who have emailed me.) This should be consistent bite for the next few weeks. Everything is pretty much the same as last week, only more fish roaming the points now, mostly spawned out fish. On your rigs try- Team Supreme french fries, Zoom centipedes, or 5"-6" lizards, setting the boat in 20'-25' and working the bait from bank back to the boat. I am fishing topwater over the tops of submerged timber on bluff ends, main lake, & secondary points. Watch out for those schooling fish also, there could be lots of action under them. Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service

In the James River & Long Creek areas, the same patterns are working for these areas. Started getting a good rig bite from Piney Creek to Flat Creek There has been a top water bite early and late, on bluff ends & timbered points. I am using Storms Jointed Thunder Stick's, Chug Bugs, Red Fins, & Spooks. Beginning to get good fish on main river flats, points, places where river channel swings into the flat. Depth anywhere from 5'-20', depending on the depth of bait fish.

I just got hooked up with Falcon rods and I got to tell you they are great! Be sure to check out the Cara series and Expert series rods when looking for you next rod.

WATER LEVEL - 914.55 . Normal Pool 915' Pool last year on this date 905.7
WATER TEMP. 68-75

In the Kimberling City, Baxter, Campbell Point areas, a lot of fish are coming off the beds and can be caught on main lake and secondary points. I 'm split shotting and Carolina rigging, Team Supreme french fries, Zoom centipedes, or 5"-6" lizards, setting the boat in 20'-25' and working the bait from bank back to the boat. Topwater bite is day to day thing. They're biting with not a cloud in the sky, on slick water. When conditions get perfect, they seem not to be interested. I've been fishing topwater over the tops of submerged timber on bluff ends, main lake, & secondary points.

In the James River & Long Creek areas, the same patterns are working for these areas. Also I have caught some largemouths on Texas rigged & split shot worms in timbered pockets, 6'-10' deep, 45 degree banks. Deep pockets seem to work better. Top water action seems to be a little more consistant from Piney Creek to Point #15. Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service 1-800-882-1978

WATER LEVEL - 914.62 . Normal Pool 915' Pool last year on this date 905.5
WATER TEMP. 67-72

After fishing hard this past week, I am seeing the majority of the fish are locked on beds all over the lake. Water is extremely clear, the main lake from Kimberling to the dam, clarity is anywhere from 15' - 25' as you go closer to the dam, mid James probably 8'-10' clarity. Some beds are in deep water, up to 12'-15' deep in some areas. Fishing has slowed, unless you are sight fishing for these bass. Even the Carolina rig bite has slowed, as so many fish are on beds. We are going in to the same areas where the fish are spawning, and split shotting a french fry or 4" finesse worm, with out the split shot. Instead we are using a nail in the worm, so it sinks slowly, and fishing it very slow, around 6'-8' deep.

Some of the fish are spawning as deep as 19', because of the water clarity. So, also fish that worm in 15'-20' in some places to get into that deep spawn range. The Carolina rig and the floating worm are bringing in the smaller fish right now, but that will also change with the end of the spawn. The big bite is definitely sight fishing for the bigger bass. Top water bite is in the first hour or late afternoon, otherwise not yet consistent... I have been using a Storms- Jointed Thunderstick, Storm's Chug Bug, Redfins, & Zara Spooks, on main lake and secondary points & watch for schooling fish. The top water bite will only get better as the fish finish spawning and get back out over the points. The Carolina bite and Chompers and top water bite should be turning on real quick. They will move out soon and can be found somewhere in the12'-18' range, depth will vary from day to day, on main lake and secondary points, on 4" worms, French fry, Centipede, Fish Doctor, 3-5" lizards, 4" twin tailed grubs-crawdad colors, green pumpkin, watermelon, & pumpkin.

After the fish spawn I think the bigger baits will work best. Flukes and floating worms are working, white, albino, or something with a blue colored back, it has been best for me early in the morning or throughout the day if it stays overcast. I am fishing them back in the pockets almost all the way to the back on 45 degree banks. I think the fish I am catching are roaming to and from spawning beds. Suspended fish are being caught on 3"-4" smoke or salt & pepper grubs rigged on 1/4 oz. heads near spawn areas, out in the center of creeks. . Fish main lake and secondary points, set boat in 20'-40' deep and cast towards the bank, fish the grub in 10'-15' deep, swimming it back to the boat. In the Kimberling area and Indian Point areas, early in the morning, the smallmouth are coming off pea gravel banks in 5'-15'. We are catching them on 3" grubs, with 1/8 oz heads. Fishing seems to be better in the Mid James area, not as good up river, which surprises me. I practiced way up for a few days up there for local tournament and not as good as what I predicted. I went up to the Long Creek area, and did better up there, also fished the Aunts Creek area, and found some there. If you are a crappie fisherman, look for them in the tops of the cedars, close to steeper banks, look for cuts in the bank. A friend of mine who likes to fish for them said they still have not all spawned, but they are tricky! Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service 1-800-882-1978

Fish are locked on beds all over the lake. Water is extremely clear, the main lake from Kimberling to the dam is anywhere from 15' - 25' as you go closer to the dam, mid James probably 8'-10' clarity. Some beds are in deep water, up to 12'-15' deep in some areas. Fishing is real good all over the lake. Stickbait bite is pretty much done right now, but top water is picking up. I have been using a Storms- Jointed Thunderstick, Storm's Chug Bug, Redfins, & Zara Spooks, on main lake and secondary points & watch for schooling fish. The topwater bite will only get better as the fish finish spawning and get back out over the points. After the fish spawn I think the bigger baits will work best. Crankbait bite is about over with for now, some spinnerbait bite on windy, and cloudy days. Flukes and floating worms are working well, white, albino, or something with a blue colored back, it has been best for me early in the morning or throughout the day if it stays overcast. I am fishing them back in the pockets almost all the way to the back on 45 degree banks. I think the fish I am catching are roaming to and from spawning beds. Suspended fish are being caught on 3"-4" smoke or salt & pepper grubs rigged on 1/4 oz. heads. Fish main lake and secondary points, set boat in 20'-40' deep and cast towards the bank, fish the grub in 10'-15' deep, swimming it back to the boat. Dam are had been producing best and the BASS anglers fished it and the White hard. Had not heard much about the James, not as many guys fishing it for some reason, and the fishing is good from Aunts Creek up. Top water bite is better up there for me than anywhere else, I think the water is warmer and many of the fish have already spawned up there. Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service 1-800-882-1978

WATER LEVEL - 914.84 . Normal Pool 915' Pool last year on this date: 905.2
WATER TEMP. 59-65

Fish are starting to bed all over the lake, also the stickbait bite is working, it is fun topwater action! Water is extremely clear, not quite as clear in the Cape Fair area. I have been using a Storms- Jointed Thunderstick, Redfins, & Zara Spooks, & watch for schooling fish.

With the cold front that just moved in, fish may back off a little, if you find a pocket with empty beds, back out a little and throw a split or drop shot a 4" worm. Fishing is excellent all over the lake. They are catching them down lake on main lake and secondary points on Carolina rig 10'-18' deep, with a 4" worm, French fry, Centipede, Fish Doctor, 3-5" lizards, 4" twin tailed grub-crawdad colors, green pumpkin, watermelon, & pumpkin. and on windy days, Wigglewarts. Crawdad pattern, in reds, browns, & oranges, and also split shotting fish doctors.

There is a stickbait bite also on the main lake and secondary points, and around shallow docks on the back corners. Fish are up there roaming shallow getting ready to spawn. Water temperature really varies from 57-65 degrees, back pockets being the warmest with some water almost 70 degrees, in the late afternoons.

Try spinnerbaits in the backs of creeks, and small jig, Team Supreme Rascal jigs is what I am using, in the backs of pockets. Crankbait bite is on gravel, protected gravel pockets, a good area to key on.

Caught a few smaller fish on topwater, using flukes and floating worms. All these fish are cruising, a good time to throw a floating worm is in the morning or an overcast day. Fishing should do nothing but get even better as the full spawn should be here in week or so. CRAPPIE- are just off the banks in 10'-20' in tree tops, and suspended.

As you see, we are STILL catching fish a variety of methods, and having a great time! Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service 1-800-882-1978

Apr 11, 2001 - Table Rock - April 7 & 8--Fished the Kings River arm. Caught lots of spots & a few largemnouth on chart/blue bandit 200 series crankbaits with wind blowing. Changed to green 3 1/2 inch tube dying the tail chartreuse when sun was higher. Fished outside river channel bends...primarily chunch rock with laydowns...2 - 6 feet. If another day was had, would have tried carolina rig in 6-10 feet for bigger fish, but my wife enjoyed catching 30 12 - 15 inch spots & largies.

WATER TEMP. 57-65

Dam area really turning on this week, fishing is excellent all over the lake. Most of the action had been in the James and Campbell Point, & Baxter areas, but now small mouths, Kentuckies, and large mouths are biting good down lake. Last weekends tournament turned out good numbers, 6 fish and 17 lbs, didn't even draw a check.

They are catching them down lake on main lake and secondary points on Carolina rig 10'-18' deep, with a 4" worm, French fry, Centipede, Fish Doctor, 3-5" lizards, 4" twin tailed grub-crawdad colors, green pumpkin, watermelon, & pumpkin. and on windy days, Wgglewarts. We had some wind this weekend the the Wigglewart bite was on.

Try spinnerbaits in the backs of creeks, and small jig, Team Supreme Rascal jigs is what I am using, in the backs of pockets.

Crankbait bite is on gravel, protected gravel pockets, a good area to key on. Should be able to get bit on topwater, a few fish are being caught using flukes and floating worms. All these fish are cruising, a good time to throw a floating worm is in the morning or an overcast day.

There is also a top water bite out off of some of the main lake and secondary points. Fishing should do nothing but get even better as the full spawn should be here in 2-3 weeks. This warm weather that is predicted this week, fishing will be good to excellent in the Aunts Creek on up to James River Arm, and from Baxter to Campbell Point. These two lake sections have the best color and the water will warm the fastest. Right now they are the most productive areas on the lake.

Right now, the fish are on a crawdad pattern, using wigglewarts, and split shotting fish doctors, centipedes, Chompers & Jewel jigs.

Main lake and timbered secondary points with wind for crankbait, pea gravel with mixed chunk rock. When the wind is not blowing, go to the same banks with split shot. All species are being caught on these points with this pattern, Largemouths, Smallmouth, & Kentuckies.

Stickbait bite in Mid lake to Dam area on medium billed rogues. Several color patterns working. Bite is extremely slow, but quality fish.

WHITE BASS- spotty, warm weather will kick them into fast action. I have been seeing numbers from Virgin Bluff on up to Asher Hollow. They are being caught on 1/16 to oz. White rooster tails, or road runners, white or chartreuse. Some being caught trolling with crankbait, 6-8 ft. deep, tieing on a 3' leader with rooster tail. UPPER JAMES RIVER , KING'S RIVER, & LONG CREEK
WATER TEMP. 49-55

Lots of smaller fish (buck bass) moving up the rivers. The rivers have excellent color, and 2'-4' visibility. The upper ends are a little cleaner on cloudy or windy days try Storm wigglewarts, on shallow main lake and secondary points. Use crawdad patterns, brown, red, orange, or green. If they won't bite a crankbait...slow down and fish a 4" french fry or fish doctor, split shotted, or a Team Supreme Rascal 1/4 jig, or a twin tail grub, Chompers. All plastics-best colors- green pumpkin, watermelon red, watermelon. Set the boat in 10' to 15', and cast towards the bank and work real slow, also try slow rolling a 1/2 oz. or 3/4 oz. spinnerbait with #5 or #7 Colorado or Indiana blades towards the back of creeks or laydowns and bushes, and the last channel swings in the creek. If they don't bite the spinnerbait try 1/4 oz. jig with 3"-4" twin tail grub as a trailer in the same areas fished from the bank to about 8'-10'. The stickbait bite we normally have this time of year seems to be off a little, I think because of water clarity...

DAM AREA, KIMBERLING, BAXTER, CAMPBELL POINT
WATER TEMP. 47-53

Fish can be caught the same way up the White River, from Campbell Point to Shell Knob as in the rivers. Water is stained in this area, there are still some fish being caught on stickbaits in the clearer water on bluff ends, main and secondary points with submerged timber. smallmouths and Kentuckies starting to bite pretty good on bottom--12'-20' deep, mainly on gravel points and cuts close to spawning areas. You can fish for them a number of different ways...split shot, drop shot, Carolina rig, spider jig, Chompers on stand up head. Baits to use...Team Supreme french fry, Chompers, small lizards, zipper worms, in green pumpkin, watermelon, & gourd green, or any shades of brown & green with a little red mixed in also. If conditions get right these fish will move up shallow enough, where you can catch them on crankbaits. Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service 1-800-882-1978
