Creek - Oh where, Oh where, have all the fish gone?
That seems to be the question this past week. We finally
got a little rain, and a couple of cool days. So lets take
a look at the fishing for Truman lake.
Lake level:
706.26
Water temp:
84 deg.
Water clarity:
main lake light stain, upper arms stained
Bass: Bass fishermen were back on the search, for
the bite. This week the bass went back to their old hiding
tricks. The bite can't get much tougher than it was Tuesday
night during the Tuesday night hawg fights. Nine teams
took to the water, only to get disappointed.
First place team of Doug and Ozzie Wallace had the winning weight
with one fish and that fish was also big bass that weighed 6.05
lbs. Emil Talley and Bob Garner took second place with
one bass that weighed 3.20 lbs. Only 14 lbs were
caught this week compared to last weeks weight of 32 lbs.
Big worms and jigs were the main bait. No pattern was found
for catching numbers of fish. Even the short fish were
very closed mouthed.
Crappie: Lots of crappie are being caught all over
the lake. However, most of the fish being caught now are
small fish. Stories of fishermen catching a 100 fish, before
catching a limit of keepers is not uncommon right now.
The upper arms of all the rivers has a very strong bite.
You might have to work a little harder to catch a limit of crappie,
but you can enjoy catching lots of fish. Minnows are the
best bait, fishing 8-10 ft. deep. Fish the main lake flats,
and points.
Whites/Hybrids: Fishing for whites and hybrids has
been off and on. The best bite is early morning and late
evening. During these two periods, fishing can be fast
and furrious. Top water baits and small sassy shads for
the whites, and large sassy shads for the hybrids. Popping
corks with small crappie jigs as trailers is working well on
whites.
Catfish: The bite seems to get better each week.
Lots of nice catfish being caught on rod and reel. Set
lines and jug lines are producing very well. Early morning
and late in the evening, look for the bite in shallow water on
the flats. Cut up leeches and fresh cut shad are the main
baits.

Creek - Cooler days has made it easier on the fishermen
who want to stay out most of the day. Looks like we may have
a few more days of cooler weather.
Lake level: 706.29
Water temp: 82 deg.
Water clarity: main lake light stain, upper arms stained
Bass: Last week everyone was searching for bass. This week
the bass came out of hiding and began to bite. We still have
suspended fish, and can test the skills of any angler. Locating
bottom feeding fish in deeper water is the more stable bite.
Big 10 inch. worms in various colors are working the best. Jigs
are the next best bait. Some bass are being caught on crankbaits
around laydowns. Ten boats came to challenge the bass in the
Tuesday night hawg fights. Once again the team of Emil Talley
and Jim Lahares brought in the winning stringer. They brought
in 3 fish, to tip the scales at 11.54 lbs. They also had big
bass that weighed 5.34. Second place went to Tom Novinska and
Rick Wade with 9.92 lbs. Last week we had a total of 24 lbs.
This week it jumped up to 32 lbs. More and bigger fish are showing
up due to the cooler weather.
Crappie: The hotter the better the bite. This past Saturday
during the big crappie tournament, the bite was on for most of
fishermen. 10 fish weighing over 12 lbs. was the winning stringer.
Most of the bigger fish that were caught were coming from the
upper river arms. Big fish of 1.96 lbs. was brought in by the
winning team. Crappie in the one pound range this time of the
year, are nice fish. Minnows were the main bait used. Some crappie
are being caught on jigs and tubes, but day after day the best
bait will be minnows. Look for crappie in the upper arms in 10-17
ft. of water and fish 8-12ft, deep.
Whites/Hybrids: Early morning and evening is still the
best chance to catch these fish. However, as the shad continue
to stay on the top, and water getting warmer the bite can happen
any time of the day. Windy days have put some of these fish in
shallow water along the windy banks. Look for pockets the wind
is blowing into and began your search. Hybrids will also get
up into shallow water chasing shad. Watch for sea gulls diving
and keep your eyes searching for surface feeding fish. Signs
of shad jumping out of the water can also tell you there are
feeding fish in the area.
Catfish: Keep a good grip on that rod as we are getting
closer to the spawn. Some nice catfish are feeding under the
surfacing white bass. These cats can be caught on jigging spoons
this time of year. The flats with 6-12 ft. are producing some
real nice catfish. Windy flats and pockets are good places to
start looking. Some good baits to use are leeches, night crawlers, fresh
cut shad, and liver. Drifting across big open flats is always
good for catfish.

JAMES RIVER Upper 85-90 - Main Lake 84-88
Kimberling city, Dam Area, & Baxter-
I have found most of the main lake fishing to be tough.
Finding some fish 30-45' deep on main lake gravel points on bottom
or in or around submerged timber. In the same depth, but
may be in over 1oo' of water. Use drop shot rigs or 3/4
oz. spoons in chrome or white or night crawlers. You can catch
some shallow fish if you can find stained water such us upper
Long Creek, Trace Hollow, Indian Creek... Throw shallow
running carnkbaits or Team supreme jigs around visible cover
on the flats, or s\fish the jigs along the channel banks especially
around channel swings.
The James River has been producing best for me these past
3-4 weeks. Catching fish on a variety of different lures
and depths, which is normal for this time of year. Let's
start out with looking for quality largemouths.
Fish main river flats and channel swings, & drops in the
morning. I've been fishing deep diving crankbaits, such
as DT-16, DD 22's, Fat Free Shads, in Tennessee Shad, Chrome/Blue,
& blue gill colors. A couple of times this week, when
finding the right group of fish my clients or I have had a double,
one keeper on the front hook and one on the back treble hook.
The best drops run from 10'-20' deep. I have also been
catching them on the flats 15'-20' deep under schools of large
shad. Carolina rigs in the same areas, with brush hogs,
Team Supreme lizards, Lake Fork ring fries, in watermelon and
& green pumpkin. My best areas have been from Cape
Fair on up the river. From Cape Fair to Aunt's Creek fish
the main lake points and bluff ends in 18'-25' with drop shot
rigs and 4" finesse worms, 1/2 to 3/4 oz chrome or white
jigging spoons the further into the clear water you go.
You'll find the fish anywhere from 25'-35' on bottom or over
submerged timber. Most of the fish up the James River have
been right on the bottom or within a couple of feet.

Creek - Hot and windy days this past week have made fishing
difficult at times. Early morning and late evenings are
the best. The lake is thriving with shad, moving around
on the surface.
Lake level:
706.40
Water temp:
84 deg.
Water clarity:
main lake light stain, upper arms stained
Bass: Where are they this week seems to be the question.
Noone seems to be on any real pattern. Some suspended fish
are being caught and some on a bottom bite. Smaller fish
on top water. Big 10 inch worms seem to be the best and
the jig second. Pole timber fished 4-8 ft. deep in 8-15
ft. of water. The Tuesday night hawg fights was a hot and
windy evening for awhile. This week 10 teams gave it their
best. First place went to the team of Chris Fanning and
Terry Close with a weight of 8.67 and big bass weighing 3.63.
Second place went to Ron Taddiken and Larry Wright with 5.71.
Total amount of bass weighed came to just over 24 lbs.
Even with a slow bite that was a fair number of fish caught.
Crappie: The bite is real good on minnows, but lots
of small fish being caught. These hot windy days seems
to make it tough to find those big fish. Lots of shad on
the surface, and I noticed lots of small bait fish around the
trees. Lots of crappie being caught in Little Tebo and
the Big Tebo close to Sterett Creek marina. Even though
the heat is almost unbearable during the day, that seems to be
the best time for the bigger fish. They relate to the shade
side of the trees. Fishing close to the river or creek
channel is also producing good numbers of crappie. The
bite in the lower arm of the lake is somewhat deeper. 10-12
ft. in 15-25 ft. of water. The upper arm bite is 8-10 ft.
10-16 ft. of water.
whitebass/Hybrids: Early morning and late evening
is still the best time for the whites or hybrids. Look
around the humps early and late and watch for pods of shad.
Both the whites hybrids and are still coming to the surface to
feed. Some of these feeding periods are very short lived.
The best time is when the CEO is running water and the surface
water slick. Top water baits for surfacing fish and sassy
shads when their down. Crappie fishermen have been catching
some nice whites on minnows in the trees.
Catfish: Nice catfish on rod and reels. The
flats on truman have been producing some good action for the
fishermen. The catfish spawn is getting real close.
Look for lots of action, during the spawn. Leeches, and
fresh cut shad are the main baits. Jug line fishermen are
doing well also. Look for these bottom feeding catfish
in 4-12 ft. of water. Drifting is a good way to cover a
lot of water looking for cat's.

Creek - Summer is showing us a lot of hot weather right
now. With the hot weather the surface temp. has stayed
up and this brings the shad to the surface. Huge pods of
shad on the surface, means there will be plenty of action morning
and evening.
Lake level:
706.72
Water temp:
80 deg.
Water clarity:
main lake clear, upper arms stained
Bass: Lots of heat combined with the wind
this past week has kept the bass in a somewhat unwilling to bite
mode. Most of the bass are suspending right now, but to
get them to bite isn't easy. One day they are on the cedars,
the next day the hard woods. One thing is for sure the
bite is about 2ft. to 4ft. deep in 6ft. to 25ft. of water.
Both jigs and big worms are the best producers. The Tuesday
night hawg fights welcomed the fishermen with wind and a very
hot evening. However that didn't stop the first place team
of Emil Talley and Jim Lahares. For the second straight
week they brought in the winning stringer. Their winning
stringer weighed 6.99 with a nice kicker that weighed 4.85.
Looked like they might also have big bass, until the team of
Randy Lutjen and Marty Watson topped the scales with a whopper that
weighed 6.31. That one fish also gave them a second place
finish. 12 boats competed and weighed in over 23 lbs. of
bass. 10" worms in red shad used with a 3/16 oz. worm
weight is one of the top producers along with a buzz bait early
and late will be the best chance of catching a lunker.
Crappie: The summer pattern is holding very steady
now, with all the hot weather and stable surface temp.
Lots of good stringers being caught on minnows. The clear
water around the Little Tebo and Big Tebo has been producing
well if you fish deep. Most of these fish are being caught
at 12-14 ft, in 20-30 ft. of water. You won't have to fish
so deep if you go up the river arms. The crappie up the
rivers are in 12-16 ft. of water. Fish 8-10 ft. deep with
minnows. Some fish are being caught on jigs, but the overall
best bite is minnows.
Whitebass / Hybrids: Early mornings and late evenings
you will find the whites and hybrids exploding the surface as
they chase the shad on the surface. These feeding sprees
can last for long periods of time, or be very brief at times.
Either way, if you ride around the lake your going to come across
these on of a kind feeding sprees. Throw Pop'R's and keep
them working across the surface and hold on. Another good
bait at this time is the 3 in. sassy shad on a 1/4 oz. jig head.
Cast to the school fish and crank it back at a fast retrieve
keeping the bait close to the surface. Colors: white with
black back, Chartreuse, and Peal. When fishing for the
Hybrids use the larger shad in the 5-7 in with a 3/4 to 1 oz.
jig head. Rat'L'Trap Spit Fires are a great top water lure
for the sufacing Hybrids. These lures have bucktail on
the last hook which really attracts the fish. The bigger
hybrids are coming to the surface in 30-50 ft, of water.
Catfish: Rod and reel fishermen are still having
good results fishing in the backs of creeks and on the flats
on main lake. Jugs and limb lines are producing also.
Using fresh cut shad and leeches are the best bait. Look
for these bottom feeding cats in 4-12 ft. of water. Drifting
across large flats will produce some nice fish. These cats
will soon be going to the spawning beds. So get ready for
some fast action.

Creek - The hot days of summer are here to stay, and
with those hot days the water temp. has climbed and brought the
shad to the surface. Lets take a look at lake levels and the
fishing.
Lake level: 707.09
Water temp: 75 deg.
Water clarity: clear main lake, stained upper arms
Bass: Long hot days, and rising water temp. has made the
bass somewhat inactive. The main bite in the Tuesday night hawg
fights seemed to be the suspended fish. Big worms, and jigs,
with a few short fish being caught on top water. Lots of fish
busting the surface on shad. Results from the Tuesday night hawg
fights are as follows. First place team of Emil Talley and Jim
Lahares tipped the scales with 3 fish that weighed 7.64 . Big
fish of the evening {3.78} went to Chris Fanning and Bud Ward.
19 boats entered the tournament and weighed in 39lbs. of bass.
The bite was slow but the amount of weight was up from last week.
The suspended bite is starting, most fish are comming out of
8' to 20' of water about 4' deep. Hardwoods seem to work the
best. Pop R's and Spooks are working on the flats and in the
backends of the creeks early and late.
Crappie: The summer pattern is getting better every day.
The shad on the surface and hot days make for good crappie fishing.
Lots of fish being caught in the river channel, fishing deep.
Bigger fish are being caught up the river arms. Most of these
fish are on the flats in 14-16ft. of water, fishing 8-10ft, deep.
Look for shad on the surface, and begin your search for the crappie.
Minnows are the best bait now.
Whitebass/hybrids: Lots of surface action in the morning
and evenings. Spit Fires by Rat'l'Trap, spooks and pop'rs work
the best. Lots of real nice white bass being caught. Work these
baits rapidly through the schools of whites. These same baits
are working just as well on big Hybrids. Lots of smaller hybrids
working the surface along with the whites. The larger hybrids
are working the surface in smaller numbers. Most of these fish
are on the main lake in 30-60ft. of water.
Catfish: Rod and reel fishermen are enjoying some excellent
fishing for those cats right now. Good stringers of channel and
blue cats being caught. Fishing the flats and the backs of the
creeks are producing very well. A wide variety of baits such
as worms, leeches, fresh cut shad, and crawdads. Look for these
cats in 4-12ft. of water. Hang on to your rod,Truman is well
known
for some big catfish.

Creek - Hot and sultry days are bringing the shad to
the top and the bite is getting better each day. The water temp
has been on the rise.
Lake level: 706.87
Water temp: 70 deg.
Water clarity: very clear, light stain, upper arms stained
Bass:The bite has been off for a few days, and Tuesday night
hawg fights proved it. 10 boats competed in the tournament and
found the bite to be slow. The suspended bite is getting started
in 10-16ft. of water fishing about 4 ft. deep. First place team
Clint Rayburn and Marty Watson with a weight of 9.08 and big
bass at 3.34. 22 lbs of bass were weighed in. Quite a drop from
last week of almost 40 lbs. Big worms, jigs, and top water are
all, seeing some action.
Crappie: The summer pattern is on in the upper arms. However
a lot of crappie are being caught in the lower part of the lake,
but fishermen are having to fish a lot deeper to catch fish.
The water is clear in the lower arms, and the bite is around
15-20ft. deep. The bite is 8-12ft. deep in the upper arms. Minnows
are still the best bait for crappie. Cloudy days have the crappie
moving around and not staying on the trees.
Whitebass/Hybrids: Hot days and the COE running water
are getting the whites into action. Several large schools of
white are coming up in the lower arms every morning and evening.
Evening bite being the best. 1/8th. oz. Rat'L'Traps, Rooster
tails, top water Spit Fires made by Rat'L'Trap are catching lots
of whites on the surface. Hybrids are suspended most of the day,
except for early morning and late evenings. Look for humps in
19-25ft. of water. The best baits are 3/4oz. Rat'L'Traps, big
sassy shads, and spoons. Some small Hybrids in the 3lb. range
are being caught around the whites on the surface.
Catfish: Some nice fish are still being caught on lines
and jugs. Most of these cats are coming off the flats. Live bait
seems to be the best, and leeches. Fresh shad is a real plus
right now for catching these big cats.

Hot sultry days are bringing the shad to the surface. Hot
weather is bring the surface temp up several degree's during
the day.
Lake Level:

Water temp: 70

Water clarity: some areas
very clear, light stain, upper arms stained
Bass: The Tuesday night hawg fights, became warm
and sticky with very warm temp. The water during the day
warmed up almost 10 degrees from last Tuesday. Even with
the heat some of the fishermen were still able to put together
a winning pattern. First place team of Chuck Strohman,
and Jeff Rehmer came to the scales with 10.87lbs. Second
place team of Rick Wade and David Braden weighed in 9.04 and
big bass weighing 3.79. 15 teams competed and weighed in
over 44lbs. of bass. Worms are still working on main lake points.
Red shad is the best color. Top water fishing is starting to
pick up on the flats. Pop R's and Zarra spooks are the best producers.
There are fish holding in the 6' to 10' range.
Crappie:The crappie have picked up on the bite since last
week. More stable weather conditions combined with warm
days have really put the crappie on the summer pattern.
Most people are fishing in 12-16 ft. of water, catching crappie
at of a depth of 8-10ft. Some real nice crappie over
a pound were weighed in at the Berry Bend crappie tourn. Saturday.
Whitebass/Hybrids Day time temp. is bringing more
shad to the surface each day. Schooling shad on the surface,
followed by whitebass and hybrids. Keep a sharp eye out
for surface action. Move is slowly towards the surface
action, then start casting roadrunners with pink heads with white
bodies, and 1/4 jigs with pearl sassy shads. Remember not
to position your boat where the whites are on the surface. Get
close and cast.

WATER LEVEL - 916.82 Normal Pool 915'
JAMES RIVER Upper 75-79 - Main Lake 73-75
Sorry we haven't been posting fishing reports, my computer
crashed in the storms, and just now getting it all worked out.
Bass are finally moving out to their summer patterns. I've
found the fishing best up the James River this past week. You
can catch them on the flats that are close to channel swings
at 12'-18', on Carolina rigs with lizards, brush hogs, or deep
diving crankbaits-DT-16, Fat Free Shad, or DD 22's, in shad colors.
Try top water baits early- Ambush's Pop A Long, Zara Spook, Red
Fin, or Pop R's. With the water up as it is, try buzzbaits early
around the bushes and on grass banks near the flats. You can
catch fish in Flat Creek and the upper James around Point #15
on shallow crankbaits B-B, Bandits etc., around tree stumps and
laydowns. I'm also using 5/16 oz. Team Supreme jigs and tubes
flipping around the same cover or on channel banks. In the Long
Creek, King's River, & White river the same patterns should
work also. These patterns should do nothing but get better over
the next month or so.
In the Kimberling City, Dam, Baxter and Aunts Creek areas
fish can be caught early on top water, some on Red Fins, Zara
Spooks, etc. Fish them around bluff end points, main and secondary
points with submerged timber. or if cloudy this pattern can last
thoughout the day. The water in these areas is extremely clear.
fish have moved out over deep water with submerged timber and
on gravel points 40'-100'. Most of the fish are being caught
at 25'-35' deep. Fish 4" finnese worms on drop shot rig,
split shot or Carolina rig, also on single tail grubs in smoke
or salt and pepper colors, using a 1/4 oz. heads and fished 15'-25'
deep over and through submerged trees.

Creek - Rain, rain go away, come back another day. We
are still getting plenty of rain, however the lake hasn't risen
that much. We are still on the up and down with water temp.
Lake Level: 708.20
Water temp: 70 deg.
Water clarity: Light stain to stained
Bass: Bass fishing remains very good. Cloud cover and rain,
along with warmer water temp. and ample bait fish, the bass have
remained shallow and on the bite. Primary baits consist of, worms,
jigs, and some top water bites. The Tuesday night hawg fights,
became a very wet evening with heavy rains. 10 boats of fishermen
braved the weather. First place went to the team of Tom Novinska
and Larry Wright with a 5 fish stringer topping the scales at
17.52. Tom and Larry also had big bass weighing 5.71 Second place
team of Chuck Strohman and Jeff Rayburn with 12.57 they also
had a big fish weighing 5.51. 47lbs. of bass were weighed in
during our 3 hour tournament. Point fishing is the best its been
in a while with fish hitting in the 6' to 8' range. Main lake
points seem to be producing the best.
Crappie: The bite has slowed down somewhat with all the
rain and cloud cover. Crappie are on the summer pattern and minnows
are the main bait. Most of the fish are in 12-14 ft. of water
and the bite is 6-8ft. The upper arms of the Grand and the Osage
are still the best producers. Most of the big fish are coming
out of these areas. Larger numbers of fish are coming from within
a 3 mile radius of Sterett Creek Marina.
Whitebass/ Hybrids: Lot of fry on the surface have brought
the whites to the top. Little Tebo and Big Tebo have a lot of
surface action. Small sassy shads or rooster tails will land
you some nice fish. Cast towards the surfacing fish, and crank
you bait back and get ready for the action. Hybrids are following
in the same pattern as the whites. Large sassy shads, and spoons,
are the best. This is the time of the year for fast action, when
these huge schools of fish bust the surface.
Catfish: Lots of real nice catfish coming off the flats
with leeches and cut shad, and live baits. Trout lines, and jugs
are doing best.

June 4, 2003 - Truman - Submitted
by Sterett
Creek - The May showers have come and gone. But June,
is producing the same showers, and some very good fishing. The
water temp. has been up and down with the cloudy days.
Lake Level: 707.47
Water temp: 68 deg.
Water clarity: Clear to light stain
BASS: The bass fishing on Truman is getting better every
week. The summer pattern is showing off with style, as some really
nice bass were brought to the scales in the Tuesday night hawg
fights. What should I throw is not the question? There are several
lures working well. Worms, jigs, pop'rs,spooks, and buzz baits.
Bass are holding in 6-8ft. and some smaller fish are in 2-3ft.
So lets get to the Tuesday night hawg fight results. First place
team of Emil Talley and Mike Macdugall with a 6 fish limit topping
the scales at 17.18 Second place team of Doug and Ozzie Wallace
with a 6 fish limit weighing 14.47. Big fish of the evening went
to the team of Tom Novinska and Jim Lehares with a whopper weighing
6.93lbs. Two other big fish were weighed. A 5.90 and 4.47.
Crappie: The summer pattern for crappie is under way.
Lots of nice fish being caught. Minnows are the best bite, in
tree rows on the flats. The bite has been slow at times because
of the cloud cover, and rain. The fish are scattered on cloudy
days, however they move back to the trees during sunshine. Most
of the crappie are being caught at 6-8ft. in 10-14ft, of water.
The upper arms of the Grand and the Osage are best.
Whitebass & Hybrids: The whites have slowed up somewhat
the past few days. Lots of cloud cover may be the problem. The
whites are doing a lot of roaming looking for shad. Last night
the whites came to the surface in several places in the Tebo.
That top water explosion, only whites can make, is getting real
close.
Catfish: Catfishing on Truman still remains very good.
Trout lines, and jugs lines are producing some real nice catfish.
Leeches, cut shad, and perch are all producing.
This weeks rankings are:
Bass # 1
Crappie # 2
Whites # 3
Catfish # 4
Well that's all the Legend has for you this week, from Sterett
