May 26, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 606.6 / Normal Lake Level : 606
Water Condition: Dingy / Surface Water Temp: 68 - 75

Memorial Day weekend is coming up, and it will be a busy one with lots of pleasure boaters and fishermen out to kick off the summer season.  Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Crappie fishing is still the same as it has been for the last couple of weeks.  Tons of small fish are being caught and not as many big ones.  The few opinions of this past Monday being a breakout day for the big ones didn't pan out.  A lot of small crappie continue to be caught near the banks.  Bigger ones along the banks are less frequent, they are still hanging back over deeper water.  If you're not having any luck near the banks, move away from the bank and fish shallow, anywhere from 18 inches to 4 feet.  Move on to a different bank or cove if need be.  A limit ofgood size crappie can be had with patience and keeping on the move.  Find good rocky banks, log jams and pockets along the banks with cover.  Minnows and jigs, along with white or pink crappie nibbles.  Expect to go through a lot of minnows.

Bass fishing has been very good.  A wide variety of baits have been used to bring in fish, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and plastics.  The more productive areas have been primary and secondary points off of the main lake.

Cat Fishing continues to be very good. Several large flatheads have been caught on trotlines or jugs using perch for bait.  Channel cats continue to provide bank fishermen with fun.

The White Bass fishing has been good.  They have been found around main lake submerged humps or long shallow points.  Silver rattle traps or silver spoons.

Happy fishing and good eating, or releasing!!

May 25, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -  The fishing here on Truman is picking up nicely now. The whites and hybrids are really starting to come in and the crappie are on the summer pattern big time. Bass fishing is good and the guys from St. Louis are tearing the catfish up. The weather is great and the COE. is running water so this weekend should remain good.

LAKE LEVEL:         707.61
WATER TEMP:       70deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Osage is a heavy stain. Both Tebo's are clear
along with the Pommies. Grand is lightly
                                    stained.

Bass: The bass fishing on Truman remains good. Last night in the Hawg Fights it took 14.44 lbs. to win. Clint Rayburn and Jack Hocket took the honors. These fish came on lizards off the Osage. 2nd went to Emil Tally and Jim Lehares with 12.82 lbs. and big fish of 5.67. These fish were out of Big Tebo caught on jigs. 3rd went to Doug and Ozzie Wallace with 7.81lbs. caught in Big Tebo on jigs. There are a couple of good patterns going right now. Flat main lake points are working. 2' to 4' of water fished with a top water will work. Bluff points are also working when fished with a jig in 4' to 8' of water. Lizards will also work in these areas. Colors are green pumpkin to black and blue.
CRAPPIE: The crappie are well into the summer pattern. 15' to 17' of water on the outside tree rows closest to the channel is your best bet. Fish minnows down about 8'. The secret is to keep moving. Cedars and hedge trees have been producing the best.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: This week we have seen a lot of big hybrids. Jerry Coose has had several in the 10 to 12lb. range but I heard that Ed Clayton got his dollar so Ed must be on really big fish. There were 2 fish brought in over 14 this week also. Steve Blake has been doing real good on the whites along with Dan Dunek. These fish are working the KK Island area. The hybrids are doing well in the G-4 area. Sassy shad with a 3/4 oz head is the top producing bait. Fish the 15' to 20' range off the ends of the under water points and the humps. Chartreuse is the top color.
CATFISH: Trot lines are the name of the game right now. Floating lines baited with leeches in about 3' of water are working well. Set stages at about a foot. Fish next to ditches or shallow creek channels.

If you are coming to the lakes area this weekend please drive carefully on and off the water. That's it for this week from

May 17, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - And the wind blew. It seems that we are having March weather this week. There is supposed to be rain moving in tonight so maybe it will die down. The lake is on a slow rise from the rain last week and the COE is running water everyday. The hybrid fishing is picking up nicely with some good sized fish coming in. The lake is in real good shape color wise. Form last week to this week the water has cleared considerably. All in all the fishing is good, now if the weather would straighten out.

LAKE LEVEL: 708.21
WATER TEMP: 65 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Clear to lightly stained.

BASS:
According to Chuck Strohman the bass fishing is pretty easy right now, but what does Chuck know. He won a tourn. Sunday and he and Jeff Rehmar won the Hawg fights last night. They weighed 7.75 lbs. last night taking their fish on crank baits out of the wind blown nitches. 2 nd. went to Doug and Ozzie Wallace who are starting the summer pattern with jigs. Third and big bass went to Kenny Mason and Randy James. Big bass was 4.28 lbs. The water is up a little but the fish are still holding on the original banks. 3' to 5' of water with lizards and brush hogs in the pockets is a good bet. The are still a lot of bass that have not spawned yet. There is a little top water bite starting on the flats in the coves as long as there is shad.
CRAPPIE: The crappie have pretty well finished spawning and are doing well on the summer pattern. The outside tree rows in 12' to 15' around the cedars and hedge trees seems to be working the best. Fish are coming on minnows at about 8'. The big thing is to keep moving tree to tree. Right now you will catch one good fish off a tree.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: This week we have seen a lot of nice hybrids come in. Jerry Coose has had several in the 8lb. range this week. Saw one 12 lb. fish that Steve Blake brought in. Sassy shad with a 3/4 oz. head is working the best. O-3 seems to be the hot spot on our end of the lake right now. Watch for surfacing fish. Dan Dunek had some real nice whites last weekend in the Osage so these fish are starting all over the lake.
CATFISH: Catfishing should really take off this week with the water rising. Floating trot lines baited with leeches along the edge of ditches should produce plenty of channels. Jugs are still working on the flats. 15' of water with stages set at 10' baited with cut shad should be the ticket.

That's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina

May 11, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - For a change the weather and the fishing have both been good for about a week now. As they say all good things must come to an end and I think the crappie are coming to the end of their spawn. We have had people catching fish on the summer pattern along with fish right on the bank. Along with that its May 10 so that means that the whites and hybrids are starting. Yesterday guide Steve Blake came in with a hole bunch of whites and hybrids so they are on schedule. They aren't all over the lake yet but it won't take long. The bass fishing remains pretty good so all and all we have a good week of fishing to look forward to.

LAKE LEVEL: 706.49
WATER TEMP: 63 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Stained

BASS:
The lizard bite is the strongest bite we have right now. Watermelon with red fleck and PBJ are the two top colors going. Fish are holding in 1' to 3' of water. From the number of beds I saw last night I would say that the bass spawn is going strong. From the results of the Hawg Fights last night it's pretty obvious that the bite is good. It was the Rayburn and Hocket show for the second week in a row. Clint and Jack weighed in 10.30 lbs with the big fish of 2.73 lbs. 2nd was Marty Watson and Buck Blackaby. Third was Ernie Cox and Russell Beck. The jig bit has slowed down but I have had a few reports that the worm bite has started. There are quite a few fish hanging on the secondary points of the coves, it really helps to have deep water close by. I haven't heard of any top water fish yet but they have to be close with the number of shad we are seeing on top.

CRAPPIE: As I said earlier I think the crappie are starting to finish their spawn. There are still fish on the banks but the numbers are getting smaller. You might want to start looking at the edge of the flats in 20' of water in the trees fishing minnows about 7' deep. The more people I talk to this morning the more I am hearing summer pattern.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: The Osage bite has started. The Berry Bend area seems to be the best so far. G 4 has some fish showing up also. Jigging spoons in 15' of water off the humps seems to be the best baits for whites. Trolling deep running crank baits and 3/4 oz. heads with 4" shad bodies is the way to pick up hybrids. Some fish have been caught surfacing but they aren't staying up long.

CATFISH: Jugs are still working on the flats. Cut shad is the best bait when fished 10' to 12'. We are starting to see more channels coming in now. Trot lines should start real soon with leeches.

May 5, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - This weeks report. Crappie fishing should heat up very soon. Later

Lake Level : 606.13 - Normal Lake Level : 606 - Water Condition: Dingy - Surface Water Temp: 56 - 62

For all you Mexicans out there, or for those folks that just like a good excuse to drink a margarita, Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Crappie fishing has been very tough for most fishermen, however that should change with this warm weather we're now getting. The water temp should warm up to where it needs to be for the crappie to start "gettin' on the banks". By all accounts the crappie have not started spawning yet, and this should give them a big push in that direction. As of yesterday, we started getting better reports of crappie being caught, mostly small ones, but hopefully that will change very soon. The better reports have them in the vicinity of spawning areas, out in coves still scattered at various depths. With the crappie wanting to spawn, it's probably a good bet to start near the banks. Find the combination of the warmest and clearest water, and work the rocky banks, log jams and pockets along the banks with cover. If no luck near the banks, work your way out, or move on to a different bank or cove. Minnows and white or pink jigs or Road Runner type lures, along with white or pink crappie nibbles.

Bass fishing continues to be good. Still pretty much as last weeks report, rocky wind blown points have produced some good action using white/chartreuse spinnerbaits, or crankbaits.

Cat Fishing has been very good. Mark Twain Lake is once again proving itself to be a very good place to hook into those whiskered fish. Several nice flatheads and blues have been brought in using trotlines or jugs, with perch being the bait of choice. Channel cats are still fun to catch, using nightcrawlers, shad sides or stink bait.

We haven't heard anything about White Bass lately.

Check out the latest pictures, from the 2.4 lb. crappie to the 55 lb. flathead.

As of last Sunday morel mushrooms were still being found.

Happy fishing and good eating, or releasing!!

May 5, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - The crappie fishing got better yesterday afternoon. Had several reports of crappie going to the banks on the Osage. Both males and females are being caught. Fish are right on the banks.

Good fishin.

May 4, 2005 - Question on Lake of the Ozarks - I will be going over to Lake of the Ozarks and I am looking for some good areas of the lake to do some bass or crappie fishing later this month......I am staying in Sunrise Beach......anyone have any advice or areas I should concentrate on? Anyone know where I could rent a bass boat that will not cost me an arm and a leg?

Thanks,
Chad

May 4, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - After two big tournaments out last weekend and a lot of cold weather the lake is starting to get back to normal. The water temp is still running below the normal and has slowed some of the fishing down. The weatherman is calling for temps. in the mid 70's for the rest of the week and the lows in the mid 40's so we should gain back the water temp. that we lost over the last couple of weeks. Maybe the crappie will come back in and finish spawning. Have had a couple of reports that some have started coming up already.

LAKE LEVEL:        706.60
WATER TEMP:       58 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Stained

BASS: Even after two big tournaments out last weekend and all the cold weather the bass fishing remains pretty good. In the Concord Village Lions Club tourn. on Saturday the winning stringer was a little over 17lbs. The story I was told was the fish were caught in the Tally Bend area on spinner baits up shallow around lay downs. Last night in the Hawg Fights it took 17lbs to win. Clint Rayburn and Jack Hockett had the winning stringer and had big bass weighing 3.71lbs. Second went to Steve Blake and Billy Fisher with 7.87lbs. The jig bite has slowed a little this week but the lizard bite took over. Watermelon red seems to be the best color with PBJ right behind it. Fish seem to be holding in 2' to 6' of water on the steeper banks. Banks that change from chunk rock to dirt or pea gravel are the best areas right now. Look for lay downs.
CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing should improve this week with the warm up we have coming in. Marty Zych had fish yesterday out of the bare pockets in 2' to 4' of water on jigs. This is a lot better than the 15' to 20' of water they have been holding in after the cold front. In our area we still have a lot of fish that haven't spawned so this should be a good weekend. I will update the report when they hit the banks again.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: There has been a few whites caught off the humps in the Berry Bend area trolling. Wiggle warts in chrome have been the best baits. I would also check the KK Island area, these fish should start moving to this area real soon.
CATFISH: We saw some nice catfish this week. We weighed a 16lb. and a 12lb. blue yesterday. These came off jugs with leeches set about 10'. The edge of the flats next to deep water seems to work the best.

April 27, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - I guess the old adage if you don't like the weather in MO. hang around it will change, and boy did it change. From having fish spawning in 3' to 4' of water one day to pushing them back to 15' to 20' the next day is a pretty drastic change. The only good report I had was there was some white bass being caught in the Berry Bend area. Lets hope the weather will get back to normal and get back to some good fishing.

LAKE LEVEL: 707.40
WATER TEMP: 60 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Stained.

BASS:
Even with the cold front and the strong winds the bass fishing remains good on Truman. This weeks HAWG FIGHTS took 9.55 lbs. to win. Jamie Ulbrich and his daughter Rachel took the honors. They also had big bass weighing 3.09 lbs. 2nd. went to Doug and Ozzie Wallace. Jig and frog and baby brush hogs seem to be working the best. Steeper banks in 4' to 6' of water using black and blue or watermelon red seems to be the right combination. Nitches in the coves with deep water close by is the place to look.

CRAPPIE: The weather has really effected these fish. Last week we had bedding fish all over, now they are back to 15' to 20' of water with a case of lock jaw. We need about 3 days of good warm weather to bring them back up shallow. Fish the steeper banks and back out to the timber. Now I would switch from jigs to minnows until they start to move up again. We still have a lot of fish waiting to spawn.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: There were some whites caught in the Berry Bend area last week. Most of these fish were caught trolling. If the weather will straighten out we should see these fish moving to the KK Island area real soon.

CATFISH: Jugs are still the best. 10' in the flats with leeches. Haven't heard anything on rod and reel fish yet.

I will do an updated report as soon as the crappie start moving back up or the white bass get going. So that's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina

April 20, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - Finally a fishing report everyone will like. The only thing that's slow on Truman right now is the white bass and hybrid bite. Crappie are on the beds and the black bass bite is really good. The weather has been treating us good with the exception that it is a little dry. The lake is a little stained but the fish don't seem to mind. So if everything keeps going it should be an awesome spring.

LAKE LEVEL:           707.86
WATER TEMP:         64 deg.
WATER CLARITY:   Stained.

BASS: The bass fishing here on Truman is about as good as it gets. Last night in the Hawg Fights it took 14.21 lbs. of fish. Our old buddies Doug and Ozzie Wallace won it and also had big bass at 5.78 lbs. 2 nd. was Jim Lehares and Steve Blake with 8.28 lbs. 3 rd. was Howard Love and john Polliff with 7.69. These are some really good weights for fishing 3 hours and in a 20 mph. wind. The jig and frog is still the top producer with the lizard and brush hog right behind it. Best colors are black and blue and watermelon red, don't forget PP&J. Half way back in the creeks on the points on the nitches seem to be holding fish. 3' to 6' of water on the steeper banks is the best of the best.

CRAPPIE: The crappie are on the beds now. You need to fish in 3' to 4' of water. Remember the lake is up 2' so this will put the fish in a little deeper water. Jig and bobber and road runners are the best baits. Color doesn't really seem to matter. Look for pea gravel banks in the creeks. Set the bobber about a foot deep. Both Big and Little Tebo are producing good fish. The spawn is just starting so we should have a couple weeks of really good crappie fishing.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: No report.

CATFISH: Jugs on the flats are still doing good. Set stages about 10' with cut shad. I look for the trot line bite to start  any time around here with the water temps. we have. Floating lines set in 3' of water with stages set about a foot next to ditches should get going real quick.

The Corp of Engineers annual day use passes are now available, stop by or contact a Corp of Engineers office for this years pass.

There should be at least one courtesy walkway in place at each of the boat ramps that normally have them.  We got a fair amount of rain yesterday, enough to send the lake up a foot from yesterdays level.  The water temps have been around 50 degrees in most of the main lake, while the upper reaches have been reached 63 degrees.  The warmer water is where the best action has been taking place.

The Crappie reports, for the most part, have been spotty, however more fishermen have reported catching good numbers of crappie.  Most have been on the small side, but then again more reports of good size crappie are coming in.  The crappie are moving closer to shore, with several being caught at 2 to 5 feet.  The clearer water the better, and in places you would normally fish during the spawn.  The spawn is probably still a couple of weeks away.  The bite has been very lite, keep a finger on your line and feel for a very lite tap.  Occasionally raise the line and feel for resistance, or watch your line for any subtle changes, such as going slack.  The South Fork, Middle Fork and Elk Fork have produced good catches.  As for bait, minnows or jigs tipped with minnows.  Crappie nibbles are very much worth considering.  Black/Chartreuse or Blue/White tube jigs have been the most popular color combos.  As always, be patient and don't give up too soon, however move on if the crappie are not cooperating within a reasonable amount of time.

Bass fishing has gotten better.  Shallow water up the forks has been productive, using gold blade spinnerbaits in shallow water about 1- 4 feet deep around timber and laydowns.  On a good day the bite has been described as an "all day bite".  The warmer the water, the better.

Cat Fishing has been good.  Several flatheads in the 30 to 55 lb. range have been caught on jugs and trotlines.  The South Fork and Middle Fork have been productive, using gold fish or perch.  Channel cats have been biting on nightcrawlers and shad sides.  The rivers and creeks are flowing from the recent rain, and will probably make the catfishing better.  A fat nightcrawler or a juicy chunk of shad tossed near the mouths of creeks should produce some cats.  Take advantage of the flowing water.  Ernie and David are pictured with a couple of the flatheads.

The White Bass have been on the move lately.  Some good catches of white bass have been reported.  Go way up the rivers and look for warmer water along rock shelves.  Jeff and Tom enjoyed hooking into the white bass.

Worth mentioning, a few incidental catches of bluegill have been reported, and morel mushrooms should be popping up soon.

Happy fishing and good eating, or releasing!!

April 12, 2005 - Table Rock Lake - Submitted by Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service -   LAKE LEVEL 912.57 NORMAL 915
WATER TEMP 56-60

The fishing the past few weeks has been tough for the most part. It's been hard to pattern anything because of the weather changes, one front after another. We seem to be about two weeks behind as far as water temperature and spawn. Fish are starting to bed in some areas of the lake now where water temps are ranging from 56 to mid 60's in some areas in the afternoon.

The upper rivers, King's White & James you can catch lots of numbers, mostly small buck bass moving up on 4"worms, French Fry's, 3"-4" grubs on main lake and secondary points, split shot, Mo-Jo rigs or Carolina rigs working best. Fish the smoke or white, or watermelon 3"-5" grubs on 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig heads. Watermelon & green pumpkin worms are working good, also Chompers in the same colors. Fish these worms and grubs in 3'-15', most of the fish have been on bottom or close. On windy days try slow rolling a 3/8 oz. & 1/2 oz. spinnerbait from the mouths of the creeks to the very backs, fishing in 2'-10'. Crankbaits in crawdad patterns (browns & greens) Wigglewarts, Bandit 200's, Bombers will also work. I have also started to catch some on Senko's in the creeks as well.

With the water temps rising and the fish moving up to spawn, all sorts of lures will catch fish, you just have to be patient and give your favorite lure time. The Dam area, Kimberling City, Baxter & Campbell Point areas~the patterns will also work in these areas, but the mosson bottom can be a problem while split shotting, Carolina rigging, or any bottom baits fished. Most of the moss seems to be from the bank out to about 8', and not all areas have it. Try to position your boat so you can fish the outside edge of the moss. Smallmouths are starting to turn on in the clearer water, they can be caught on grubs and 4" worms split shot or on slider head rigs.

Good Luck!!

April 13, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - LAKE LEVEL: 708.05
WATER TEMP: 56 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Stained but very fishable.

BASS:
We had our season opener of the Sterett Creek Hawg Fights last night. We went out at 5:30 pm. and came in at 8:15 pm. Not a lot of time to fish but there were a lot of fish caught. The winners were Roger Phil and John Pender with 11.68 lbs. Second went to Bill and Mike Ward with 5.03 lbs which was also the big fish. 3rd went to Doug and Ozzie Wallace with 4.49 lbs. Most of the fish were caught on jigs and spinner baits. Jim and I had 13 fish but only 2 keepers. Secondary points 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back in the creeks is the place to look. 1' to 4' is where we found all our fish. All the fish were holding on wood. Pumpkin jigs and black and blue are the best colors. There were also some fish caught on crankbaits chrome and fire tiger the top two colors.
CRAPPIE: I have had a few reports of crappie up shallow way up the lake. The Sparrowfoot area on the Grand and Wrights Creek and Happy Hollow up the Osage are holding a few shallow fish. This is the hardest time of the year to predict what the fish are going to do because of the weather. A cold front will back these fish off for a couple of days. Like I said earlier the weather is supposed to get nice starting tomorrow so things should start happening this week.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: No report.

CATFISH: Jugs are still the best of the best. 9' to12' on the flats using cut shad and little smokies. Haven't seen any real big fish this week but the fry pan fish are doing good.

That's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina 660-438-2280 critter@dam.net
With that we bid you good fishing. Tommy

There should be at least one courtesy walkway in place at each of the boat ramps that normally have them.  Despite some rain yesterday, it wasn't enough to get the rivers excited.  The water temps have been far ranging this past week, however the recent warm weather has given the water a much needed boost in temperatures.  Several reports had the main lake temp at about 45 degrees, while the upper reaches were as warm as 60.

Some fishermen have experienced boat problems at the ramp.  Prior to your first outing this year, make sure you have everything checked out and in good working condition.

The crappie reports have still been spotty, however it is on the verge of getting better.  Last weekend most fishermen struggled to find them, while some caught several small ones.  The fishermen that caught crappie reported catching anywhere from 40 to 100.  The most reported size is about 8 inches, with enough 9 to 10 inch crappie to make a meal.  Monday and tuesday we had some better reports, which gives reason to believe the crappie fishing is starting to heat up.  The crappie are still scattered, with some being caught at 5 feet deep, while others are finding them along bluffs about 12 feet deep.  The bite has been very lite, keep a finger on your line and feel for a very lite tap.  Occasionally raise the line and feel for resistance, or watch your line for any subtle changes, such as going slack.  With the cold water temps, the crappie have been pretty sluggish.  Any branch on the south side of the lake could prove productive, look for banks that get good day long sunshine, with good heat gathering objects, such as large trees and rocky banks.  Bridge piers gather warmth and could be worth trying.  As for bait, minnows or jigs tipped with minnows.  Crappie nibbles are very helpful.  Black/Chartreuse or Blue/White tube jigs have been the most popular color combos.  As always, be patient and don't give up too soon, however move on if the crappie are not cooperating within a reasonable amount of time.

Follow this link to an excellent article about spring time crappie fishing on Twain.

Bass fishing has been tough.  The few reports have not been encouraging yet, however the season is young and the water temps are still cool.

We haven't heard much from cat fishermen this week.  The water flow into the lake is low.  The warm, sunny days, along with the warm winds will rapidly heat shallow areas of a lake, which are warmer than the nearby deeper waters.  Look for wind blown shallow banks, the warmer water and food gathers there.  Catfish love these conditions, moving out of the deeper, colder areas of the lake to feed themselves.  If you don't have any bites for about 30 minutes, try a different area.  Shad sides is an excellent choice under these conditions, the smellier the better.

Happy fishing and good eating or releasing!!

April 5, 2005 - Lake Taneycomo Question - I am going to be on vacation in July at Lake Taneycomo. The only reports I can find are about trout. Is that the only game fish available, and if not what is and how should I go about finding them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. MR

Mar. 31, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - This weeks report, it shouldn't be too long before things start heating up. Later, Larry

Lake Level : 607.17 / Last Weeks Lake Level: 606.1 / Normal Lake Level : 606

Water Condition: Dingy - Muddy / Surface Water Temp: 50

There should be at least one courtesy walkway in place at each of the boat ramps that normally have them. The wind has been downright brutal the past couple of days, enough to keep a lot of people off the lake. The wind has been a strong enough factor to decide what ramp to use, avoid ramps with a strong cross wind or that are facing the wind. The good news, the wind has been out of the south and south/west which means the warm winds, coupled with 60+ degree weather, will help warm up the lake that much faster. The weather reports for this weekend are good, so get out and enjoy the lake.

The crappie reports are spotty. The usual early season pattern favors the northern branches, some good reports have come out of Sandy and Shell Creeks. A couple of good early season bets on the south side of the lake, are Lick Creek/Dry Fork and Pigeon Roost. As of late, the fishermen that have been catching crappie have found them about 8 - 9 feet deep around brush close to rocky banks, with good southern exposure. Any branch on the south side of the lake could prove productive, look for northern banks that get good day long sunshine, with good heat gathering objects, such as large trees and rocky banks. One fisherman this week said he did better in the South Fork than in Sandy Creek. Bridge piers gather warmth and could be worth trying. As for bait, minnows or jigs tipped with minnows or crappie nibbles are best. Black/Chartreuse tube jigs have been the most popular color combo. As always, be patient and don't give up too soon, and keep on the move if the crappie are not cooperating.

Bass fishing is still very slow. The few reports have not been encouraging yet, however the season is young and the water temps are still too cool.

We haven't heard much from cat fishermen this week, last week they were catching them back in the South Fork. The water flow into the lake is slowing down. However the warm, sunny days, along with the warm winds will rapidly heat shallow areas of a lake, which are warmer than the nearby deeper waters.

Happy fishing and good eating!!

March 30, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - Windy is the word from Sterett Creek this week. The only good thing about this weather is that it is warn and with the wind it should warm the water up and get the fish going. We are supposed to have a small cool front come thru tomorrow and this should settle the wind down for the weekend. With the conditions the way they are I think we will see some fish caught this weekend.

LAKE LEVEL: 707.10
WATER TEMP: 46deg.
WATER CLARITY: Stained but very fishable.

BASS:
With last weekend being Easter I didn't see any tourn. going out on the lake. Never the less the fish still bit a little. The rogue bite is still going up on Pommie. There is a spinner bait bite going on the Tebo arm according to Guide Steve Blake. Slow roll spinner baits off main lake points in about 4' of water. Steve said you need to use a big bladed bait and pull it real slow. There is also a jig bite starting in some of the creeks on the secondary points. these fish seem to be holding in 3' to 8' of water. Here again you have to move the jig real slow. This is the time of the year that the fishing will get better every week.

CRAPPIE: There is a crappie bite starting up the rivers. A jig set under a bobber is starting to catch fish. The Barker Creek area up Big Tebo up to C bridge has been producing some nice fish off the banks. The bucks are starting to go in and look for spawning areas. If the weather holds had we get what they say we are going to get I think this weekend we should see some shallow fish out of Brush and Clear Creek.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: No Report.

CATFISH:
This week has been tough on the cat fish guru. He said the wind was to tough to chase jugs. Over the weekend there was some fish caught on jugs using cut shad. Jugs set on the flats at about 9' seemed to work the best. The big thing is to have deep water close by.

That is it from Sterett Creek Marina for this week.

March 23, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - It looks like a typical Easter Week in the Ozarks, cool, rainy and overcast. Even with the weather the bass fishing is not to bad everything else is still waiting for the spring warm up. There were a couple of bass tourns. out this past weekend that had some really good weights. Our water here on Truman is still a little cool but with a couple days of warm temps and some sunshine things will fire right up.
LAKE LEVEL: 707.21
WATER TEMP: 45deg.
WATER CLARITY: All of the arms are stained.

BASS:
As I said earlier the bass fishing has been pretty good. There has been a good Rogue bite on the Pommie Arm. Team Supreme went out of Sterett Creek on Sunday and Duer and Trent brought in the winning stringer weighing 17.82lbs. Mike Friend and Carl Shipman had big bass weighing 5.52lbs. On Saturday Bass World Sports had a tourn. with a 15 1/2lb. winning string and big fish over 7lbs. The best bite was the Rogue bite on the Pommie arm in shallow water. 1' to 4' seems to be the area to work with deeper water close by. There is also a jig bite starting on the Tebo arm. Most of these fish are coming out of 2' to 5' of water on main lake cuts. This fishing will do nothing but get better.

CRAPPIE: With the cold fronts that have come and gone around here lately and the lack of water temp. the crappie fishing is still slow. If you want to brave the cold you can catch some fish off the brush piles on main lake. Look for piles in 20' of water and use jigs. I haven't heard of any fish pulling back in the creeks yet. Another week should make all the difference in the world.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: We heard of one good hybrid this weekend. It weighed 13 3/4lbs and was caught on a crankbait while bass fishing. these fish are sill away's away.

CATFISH: According to our catfish guru Dick Caton the catfishing on jugs is still good. He has had a couple over 20lbs. this week and a few smaller fish. He said he has been using little smokes { and he has put on a little weight must be sampling his bait} Jugs on the flats set about 9' seems to be the best of the best.

That's about it for this week. If you need anything you can contact us at Sterett Creek Marina

The water temperature is still a bit cold for the crappie to start biting aggressively, but they are definitely on the upswing. Some days are better than others, but the northern branches are your best bet. Sandy and Shell creeks are a good place to start. If you're bound and determined to fish a south branch, you might try Lick Creek along with the Dry Fork, as the sun usually warms them early. Any place on the south side could prove productive if you fish by an overhanging rock or large tree on the northern banks with lots of sunshine. If it's not too windy, the bridge piers are always a good place to try. If you're not familiar with the lake, you will definitely want to spend your time in the northern coves. As for bait, minnows or jigs tipped with minnows or crappie nibbles are best. Pink, white and neon crappie nibbles are the most popular with neon being the most chosen. As always, be patient and don't give up too soon!

Bass fishing is still very slow. Not many have been out fishing, but the few who have dared have been disappointed.

Now if you're just out to catch fish and want some action, you might try catfishing way back in the South Fork. Many fishermen are catching them on rod and reel by boat and even from shore. Shad sides.

Happy fishing and good eating!!

March 17, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - Lake Level: 707.28 - Water Clarity: Stained. Pommie, light stain, very fishable. - Water Temp: 45 deg.

BASS:
The bass are starting to hit jerk baits on the Pommie arm around the cedars. Work the 8' area next to drop offs. In our area you might try a jig on the main lake points in 6' to 12' of water on the steeper banks. If you throw a jerk bait in this area you might want to go with a gold color. There has been a couple of tourn> on Truman and the winning stringers are running in the 13# area which for this time of the year is pretty good. We have Team Supreme out this weekend so we should have a good idea of what's going on around here.
CRAPPIE: Guide Steve Blake has been catching some nice crappie off the brush piles on main lake out of 20' of water. Fish are down about 12'. He has been using all jigs. With the weather patterns we are looking at now I would say we should have fish starting to move in the creeks in another week.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: No Report

CATFISH:
Dick Caton a local fisherman has been doing good on jugs set 9' deep on the flats using little smokies. He had a couple fish right at 20# this week. Haven't heard of any rod and real fish yet.

MARCH 13, 2005 - Table Rock Lake - Submitted by Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service -   LAKE LEVEL 913.75 NORMAL 915 - WATER TEMP 46-50

Fish are staging all over the lake, there still doesn't seem to be one area or arm of the lake that is better than the other. Many of the same patterns seem to be working all over the lake, si I'm not going to break them down into areas. Main river arms have some color (stain), crankbaits are working better in these areas, but will also work in the clearer water if overcast or windy. Best crankbaits seem to be Storm Wigglewarts, & Pradco's Bombers-6A-7A, in crawdad patterns (green & red). Finding fish on secondary points, channel swings in the creeks, & water for rock transitions from chunk rock banks to pea gravel banks. Some days fish are 3'-6', others like this weekend when cold front came in, they were 8'-12'. Try some Team Supreme jigs or Eakins jigs in brown & black.

Some fish are being caught in the areas a little deeper, 15'-25' on football jigs-Brown/Purple & Brown /Green. Split shot or MoJo rigged watermelon or green pumpkin Team Supreme French Fry's. Jerkbaits fished on secondary points in 5'-8', over 15'-25' of water are producing big fish, but the bites are few and far between. 3"-5" Team Supreme grubs in smoke, pearl, salt & pepper, and watermelon colors working on main lake and secondary gravel points fished 15'-25' deep. Some days fish are suspending over deeper water and submerged timber, and other days they have been right on bottom. Watch for schools of shad, if sare are suspending the bass should also be. I'm not saying by any means that fishing is easy right now, you have to work hard, but the rewards can be great. Fishing is just going to keep getting better and better as the water warms and fish move into spawn

Crappie are still biting great. I've found it best in stained water in Long Creek & James River, I haven't been in the King's or Upper White recently. Fish have been 3'-8' in submerged timber in the creeks and 5'-12' deep on main river flats. Small tubes working good, road runners and beetle spin in a variety of colors.

MARCH 6, 2005 - Table Rock Lake - Submitted by Pete Wenner's Professional Guide Service -   LAKE LEVEL 913.80 NORMAL 915
WATER TEMP 44-50

Bass are in pre-spawn, staging on main lake and secondary points. Crappie are biting like crazy this past Thursday afternoon. We caught 28 Crappie in 2 hours, all keepers.

The Mid-James and Long Creek areas look like they are starting to turn over. Have not been up the Upper White River recently, all my quality bass have been on stickbaits on main lake and secondary points close to spawning areas. Try the new Rapala X-Rap, Smithwick Rogue, or LuckyCraft in Shad patterns, Ghost, or Chartreuse Shad working in the clear water, Black & Gold, Purple/Chartreuse, and Clown in the stained water such as the mid river areas where the water visibility is 1'-3'. These fish will bite the Jerkbait without wind, but in the clearer water I've found I need some wind on the points to help you catch the fish. In the colored water use crankbaits, & Storm Wigglewarts, fish these 2'-8' deep on transition banks, chunk rock to pea gravel in the creeks, same areas as the Jerkbaits.

Also try small Team Supreme jigs in Brown & Black in the same areas. I haven't found bass to be suspending off the points yet in the open water, but they should be anytime. You can catch these fish on 3"-5" Team Supreme grubs in Smoke, Pearl, & Watermelon and on 1/4 oz. darter heads, swimming the bait at the depth your are marking fish on your locator. The bottom bite, split shot, & Mo Jo rig is due to start anytime~15'-20' on main lake and secondary gravel points. Crappie up the rivers are on the flats in spawning areas, mostly males, most of the females I'm catching are suspended in the timber 2'-8- deep over 15'-20'

The latest scuttlebutt on crappie fishing; it's slow for the most part, the lake still needs to warm up a little more to get the crappie more active. The fishermen that have caught some, found them on the north side of the lake in the flats, in shallow water anywhere from 2 to 5 feet deep. Minnows, or jigs tipped with crappie nibbles. One fisherman reportedly found some 50 degree water and today's 70 degree temperatures can only help. That is the usual pattern for this time of year, the northern banks warm up the fastest from the southern sun.

It's time to be planning your outings for this year. The rooms are already filling up fast for this spring, if you plan on catching this year's crappie or bass spawn, or the spring turkey hunt, you better make your reservations now.

There's been a lot of rain the past few weeks and it has the lake going up and down like a yoyo. It is currently dropping. The current cold spell has the lake freezing over. The coves are iced over and most of the main lake is starting to freeze over as well. The solunar time table charts have been updated for this year. These charts can be used to help narrow down the best times of the day, week or month to fish and hunt. Some fishermen and fishing tournaments plan trips around them, as well as hunters.

This years fishing prospects for Mark Twain Lake as provided by the Fisheries Management Biologist.

_______________________________________________________________

Below are the prospects for Mark Twain for 2005. As you know, fishing is dependent on a lot of factors that are difficult to predict, but this is the assessment based on surveys during 2004.

Largemouth Bass fishing during 2004 was fair, and anglers can expect fishing to be similar during 2005. Based on spring 2004 surveys, bass abundance in Mark Twain has declined from the record levels during 2003. However, the abundance of bass at least 15 inches long should be higher during 2005 than it was during 2004, so anglers can expect to catch more larger fish this year. Three of every 10 fish caught during 2005 should exceed 15 inches long.

Crappie fishing during 2005 will also be similar to 2004, although the abundance of small crappie has declined. Fewer crappie in the lake during 2005 may lead to improved growth and more larger fish by summer's end if gizzard shad forage is adequate. Two or three of every ten crappie caught should exceed 9 inches long, and anglers should not have to filter through as many small crappie as they did during 2004.

White Bass fishing will remain sporadic. Anglers do best when these fish are spawning on riffles in tributary streams in early spring, or while feeding on schooling shad or congregating over underwater humps during the summer.

Walleye abundance remains low, although anglers are reporting more incidental catches than during most recent years. This may be a result of recent tributary stream stockings.

Catfish anglers can expect good fishing to continue this year. Many flathead catfish exceeding 25 pounds are caught each year on trot lines, bank lines, and jugs. Catfish anglers do best in the upper portions of North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork arms.
