July 28, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 601.9 / Normal Lake Level : 606

Water Condition: Clear / Surface Water Temp: 84 - 87

The rain and break in the heat yesterday was very welcome, but the rain was not nearly enough. The lake continues to drop.

Crappie. The cold front yesterday slowed the crappie down, however it should get right back to where it was. The pattern has been the same as the previous week, with lots of small crappie being caught. The bigger ones are more scarce, however they are there, you just need to locate them and entice them to feed. The better areas continue to be tree covered points and bluffs, next to the river channel. The best bite has been early in the morning, till about 9:00 am, and the last couple hours of daylight. They've been caught anywhere from 12 - 20 feet deep. Minnows or minnow tipped jigs, or jigs tipped with Crappie Nibbles.

Bass fishing continues to be good, however they've gone deeper. The best bite has been in the main lake area, in about 10 - 20 feet of water, using Carolina rigged plastic baits (worms, lizards, brush hogs) or jigs.

Cat Fishing continues to be good. Mostly channels on rod and reel, using nightcrawlers or cut shad. Trot line and jug fishing has been tougher.

White Bass fishing is the same as last week, it's been good but sporadic. Most of the reports are of individual white bass being caught. Schools of white bass are still being spotted, but it has not been non stop action like a few weeks ago.

Conservation Agent Bob Lyons has written a new article for the Conservation Corner. It deals with wildlife habitat, the importance of it, how to improve it on your land, and where to get financial assistance for it.

July 21, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 602.5 / Normal Lake Level : 606

Water Condition: Clear / Surface Water Temp: 84 - 87

It's hot and dry, and the lake level continues to drop.

Crappie. This week has seen lots of small crappie being caught, the bigger ones have been more elusive. The better areas continue to be off of points, next to deep water near the river channel with good cover. Bridge piers are holding a lot of crappie. The best bite has been early in the morning, till about 10:00 am, and the last couple hours of daylight. They've been caught anywhere from 12 - 20 feet deep, drop your bait to the bottom and come up. Minnows or jigs, tipped with crappie nibbles.

Bass fishing continues to be good, however they've gone deeper. The best bite has been in the main lake area, about 15 - 20 feet deep, using plastic worms or jigs.

Cat Fishing has been fairly good. Mostly channels on rod and reel, using nightcrawlers or cut shad. Trot line and jug fishermen have been having a tougher way to go during the past week.

White Bass fishing has been good, but sporadic. We've received reports of a lot of individual white bass being caught. There have also been some reports of schools of white bass.

July 20, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -   Even with the hot weather the fishing is holding its own on Truman. We have seen some nice crappie come in this week and also some nice hybrids. The lake is at about normal pool and the water clarity is good. The COE has been running water every afternoon which really helps the fishing and with the hot weather I would think that they will keep running.

LAKE LEVEL: 706.20
WATER TEMP: 83 deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Everything is clear to lightly stained with the
exception of the upper Grand and the
upper Osage.

BASS: The bass fishing on Truman remains fairly good. The worm bite is on and there is a top water bite early and late. The fish seem to be holding of the points in 10' to 12' of water. The 7 1/2" and the 9" worm is working better in these areas. There is also a suspended bite in the tree rows on the 10 1/2" worms.
Best colors are blue fleck and plum. Pop R's and buzz baits are working on the flats next to deep water in the low light hours. Last nights hawg fights were won by Gary Stringhouer with 8.23 lbs.
Fish were caught on jig and frog and buzz baits. 2nd. went to Ernie Cox and Russell Beck with 7.81lbs. They also had big bass weighing 3.47lbs. 3rd was Emil Tally and Jim Lehares with 5.08lbs.

CRAPPIE: The crappie have done a little switch on us. The best bite is on the bluff banks out of 30' of water fishing 15' to 20' deep. Minnows and jigs both are working on these fish. The outside tree rows are still producing fish but the fish are really spread out.15' to 20' deep tree rows are doing the best fishing minnows about 10' to 12' down. At this point big Tebo has been producing the best numbers. The smaller fish have started biting so take plenty of bait.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: Jerry Coose is showing us again that the hybrid bite is alive and well. The 4" and 5" sassy shad is the top producer. The humps next to deep water are the best. With the Coe running water in the afternoons the evening bite is the best. Graf the fish and use the count down method to catch fish. We have been seeing some surface activity but the fish aren't staying up for any period of time. Trolling has been catching some nice sized whites in the O 3 and KK Island area.

CATFISH: We are seeing a few cats come in off trot lines. Lines set in 12' to 20' of water are working the best. Leeches are the best bait with night crawlers coming in a close second. Creek channels seem to be the best areas.

July 14, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 603.7 / Normal Lake Level : 606

Water Condition: Clear / Surface Water Temp: 84

The lake is lower than it has been for a while. A word of caution, some trees and underwater humps are emerging. If you are unfamiliar with the lake then make sure you get a good map that shows the river channels and depths. There is plenty of open water in the main lake and lower sections of the forks for cruising around in. This word of caution should apply to any body of water you choose to visit.

Crappie fishing is pretty much the same as it was last week. The crappie are in a summer pattern, and it's been mostly small crappie around 6 - 8 inches long being caught. Bigger crappie can be caught, you just have to go after them and keep on the move. If you 're catching nothing but small crappie, it's time to move on. Of course, if you've got kids that just want to catch fish and keep busy, then that should be no problem. Even small fish make for good childhood memories. The better areas seem to come off of points with good cover and within close proximity to the river channel. Bridge piers can keep a fisherman busy, there's just not much size to the crappie hanging around them. The best bite has been early in the morning, till about 10:00 am, and the last couple hours of daylight. They've been caught anywhere from 8 - 15 feet deep, over deeper water. Some fishermen are finding the bigger crappie by trolling along tree lines next to river channels. This is a good way to cover a lot of territory and find holes along the way. Minnows or jigs, tipped with crappie nibbles.

Bass fishing has been very good. Crank baits, jigs and spinners have been good, worked near main lake points with good rock cover or brush piles. The best bite has been in shallow water about 2 - 5 feet deep.

Cat Fishing has slightly improved. Rod and reel fishermen have been catching channel cats in 4 - 10 feet of water near the river channels. Set line fishermen have been doing a little better as of late using goldfish. Nightcrawlers or cut shad for rod and reel fishermen, perch or goldfish for set lines.

White Bass fishing has been good. Points and shallows near deeper water, where the white bass can funnel the shad and feed. Watch for them busting the surface, toss a silver spoon or rattle trap into the feeding frenzy and use a fast retrieve.

July 13, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -   Still no rain but he weather has been great this week. We have been seeing some nice crappie coming in and the bass have moved to the summer pattern so all in all the fishing is not to bad.

LAKE LEVEL: 707.23
WATER TEMP: 82 deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Big and Little Tebo, clear to light stain.
Big and Little Pommie, clear.
Upper Osage, heavy stain.
Lower Osage, Light stain.
Upper Grand, Heavy stain.
Lower Grand clear.

BASS: The bass fishing on Truman is starting to pick up. The fish are working the summer pattern right now. They are starting to suspend in the trees in 15' to 20' of water at around 6'. Big worms has been the best bait. Last night in the hawg fights Howard Love and John Pollitt took 1st. place with 8.28 lbs, and had big bass weighing 4.10lbs. 2nd. went to Emil Tally and Jim Lehares with 6.15lbs. Third was Christ Fanning and Ned Aurther with 4.51lbs.

CRAPPIE: There are two different patterns working on the crappie now. There are fish on the bluffs in 25' to 30' of water suspended at 20' to 25'. There are also fish on the edge of the flats in the outside tree rows in 10' to 17' suspended at 7' to 10' down. Minnows are the best baits in both areas.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: Most of the fish we are seeing now have been caught trolling. O 3 has been doing good along with the humps at Berry Bend. Crank baits that will get down to 16' are the best. The COE has been running water in the afternoons so the evening bite has been better.

CATFISH: Trot lines in 5' to 8' on the flats baited with leeches are the best of the best now. Floating lines with drops set about a foot deep next to deeper water are producing fish. Remember to run lines more often with the heat.

July 13, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -   The holiday weekend has come and gone and a busy one it was. The fish even cooperated. Talked to a lot of people who did good on crappie and white bass. The lake is clearing up nicely and the COE has been running water about everyday so we should continue to have good fishing.

LAKE LEVEL: 707.90
WATER TEMP: 83 deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Big and Little Tebo, clear to light stain.
Upper Grand, heavy stain.
Lower Grand, clear.
Big and Little Pommie, clear.
Upper Osage, heavy stain.
Lower Osage, light stain.

BASS: The bass fishing on Truman has slowed a little this week. Between the boat traffic this weekend and the fire works I think they are still hiding under their rocks. Emil Tally and Jim Lehares won the hawg fights last night with 7.07lbs. Second place went to Chuck Strohman and Jeff Rehamar with 5.48lbs. Third and big bass went to Larry Wright and Tom Novinska 2.88lbs. Most of the fish were caught on worms. There really wasn't much of a pattern with fish coming from 6' to 20' of water. Long deep water points are holding fish in 12' to 16' of water using 9" worms. Points with current breaks are also holding fish when they are running water. The suspended bite has started on big worms. Tree rows with 15' to 20' of water seem to be the best rows. There is a top water bite in the Osage on the flats where the shad are present. Buzz baits and Pop R's are the way to go. Timbered flats with 6' to 8' of water are best.

CRAPPIE: The crappie are starting to move back off the bluffs and on the outside tree rows. 12' to 20' tree rows are the best. Minnows fished 7' to 8' down in the cedars and hedge is the best choice. There are still fish on the bluffs but they seem to be running on the small side. Talked to a buddy of mine and he did good in the Osage in the stained water tipping a jig with a minnow on the flats. Said you could fish as shallow as 10' and still catch good fish.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: The whites are doing good on the humps in the Berry Bend area. Spoons fished in 16' of water is the best bite. KK Island also has whites on the south end. The hybrids are still surfacing and the 5" sassy shad on a 3/4 oz head has been working well on them. Here again with the COE running water in the afternoons I look for this bite to keep getting better.

CATFISH: The catfishing remains good on Trot lines. The floating lines set in 5' of water on the flats next to deep water baited with leeches is the best of the best.

June 16, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 604.7 / Normal Lake Level : 606 /Water Condition: Clear / Surface Water Temp: 82 - 85

Crappie fishing continues to be fair. The crappie are well settled into a summer pattern. The bigger crappie are there, and we continue to get reports of crappie in the 10 - 12 inch range. With that said, the bite has been slow and you need to keep on the move. Most reports have the keeper crappies coming in 2 - 3 out of a hole, and then it's time to move on and find a few more. Some fishermen are finding them by trolling alone tree lines next to river channels. This is a good way to cover a lot of territory and find holes along the way. The better areas seem to come off of points with good cover and within close proximity to the river channel. The best bite has been early in the morning, slacking off about 10:00 am, and later in the day till about dark. They've been caught anywhere from 8 - 15 feet deep, over deeper water. Minnows or jigs, tipped with crappie nibbles.

Bass fishing continues to be very good. Crank baits and jigs have been the best lures, worked near points or rock cover, close to deeper water. Good catches of keeper size bass are being reported. Crank baits or spinners worked in 8 - 12 feet of water.

Cat Fishing has been slow. Nightcrawlers or cut shad for rod and reel fishermen, perch or goldfish for set lines.

White Bass fishing continues to be very good. Points and shallows near deeper water, where the white bass can funnel the shad and feed. Watch for them busting the surface, toss a silver spoon or rattle trap into the feeding frenzy and use a fast retrieve.

Several fishermen have commented on the numerous schools of shad this summer. This is indication of an excellent hatch and good news for all the other species that depend on shad as a food source.

June 15, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -   The beginning of summer is here and it is great. Sunny sky's and warm temps have led to some pretty good fishing this week. The lake has been up and down a little but the fish don't seem to mind to much. From what I can see the water clarity is not to bad. There is mud in the upper arms but in our area the water looks good. You still have to be careful running as the water is up about 4'.

LAKE LEVEL: 710.06
WATER TEMP: 77deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Big and Little Tebo, light stain
Lower Grand, light stain Upper Grand dirty
Big and Little Pommie, light stain
Lower Osage, heavy stain
Upper Osage, dirty

BASS: The bass are starting to move in the summer pattern. Last night in the hawg fights Gary Hamilton and Gary Jones took the honors with 9.55lbs. and had big bass weighing 4.91. 2nd. went to Fred Baraks with 8.91lbs. 3rd. went to John Slavens and Jason Eierman with 5.80lbs. Some of the fish have started to suspend in 15' to 20' of water 4' to 6' down. Worms and jigs are working the best. Off the points with flooded bushes fish are holding 6' to 7' deep. Early and late either Pop R's or buzz baits are working, during the day fish can be caught on big worms.

CRAPPIE: With the upper Grand and the Osage dirty we have lost a bunch of good crappie fishing water. Big Tebo has been producing some good limits of crappie. These fish are holding off the bluff banks in 20' to 30' of water and can be caught on minnows fished 15' deep. There has been some fish caught in Little Tebo on the isolated trees. These trees are in 20' of water and fish are coming from around 12'. The Finey Creek area is also producing fish off the outside tree rows on minnows in 20' of water about 10' deep.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: This week Guide Steve Blake has been tearing up the big hybrids. The 4" sassy shad has been the best bait going. Big Pommie has been the hot spot on the lake. There has been a lot of surface activity going on. If you see one fish surface fan cast the area there will be more fish in the area. Trolling mag wiggle warts has been another way of catching whites. There are fish holding around the humps and off the edge of the flats next to deep water. Pearl and pearltruse are the top colors.

CATFISH: The catfishing has been good on Truman this week. Last weekend we saw several fish in the 20lb.area. Fish are coming off trot lines set in 5' of water with stages set about a foot deep. Either leeches or cut shad are the top baits. There has been some rod and reel fish caught on night crawlers in the back ends of some of the creeks. These fish are holding in 6' to 8' of water.

June 16, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 608.3 / Normal Lake Level : 606 / Water Condition: Clear in the lower lake, muddier in the upper lake. / Surface Water Temp: 76 - 79

Most of the Crappie being caught are small. Crappie fishing through the weekend was good, although most have been on the small side. They have been slower this week. The better catches have come off of a summer pattern. Tight lining minnows or jigs near bridge piers, and bluffs, with good standing timber. Some people know where honey holes are that on the surface wouldn't seem to have anything to offer. Holes like this come from spending many hours on the water. If using jigs, use the larger umbrella jig tipped with a minnow or crappie nibble.

Bass fishing continues to be very good. Numerous catches of keeper size bass have been reported. Plastic worms, jigs and crank baits have been the lures of choice lately. Primary main lake points and secondary points, working laydowns and timber.

Cat Fishing continues to be very good. Several flatheads, blues and channels have been caught this past week. The bigger flatheads and blues have been brought in on trot lines baited with perch. Bank fishermen have done best using nightcrawlers and cut shad.

The White Bass fishing has been good. We haven't had reports of fishermen finding the schools of whites, as have been getting over the past few weeks. However we are still hearing of several white bass being caught, some are incidental catches being caught by bass and crappie fishermen.

Happy fishing and good eating, or releasing!!

June 15, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -   The fishing here on Truman has gotten a little tougher this week. Well maybe it isn't a little tougher there is just a lot less water to fish.
The lake has come up a couple of feet from last week and the Osage has gotten real dirty. We had over 3" of rain over the last few days plus what is coming in from the Osage and the Grand River water shed we are starting to see a lot of colored water.

LAKE LEVEL: 710.30
WATER TEMP: 75 deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Little Tebo lightly stained.
Big Tebo clear to lightly stained.
Grand, upper end dirty. Lower stained.
Osage, dirty.
Little Pommie, stained.
Big Pommie, stained.

BASS: The bass are somewhere between the original bank line and the flooded grass. There are a few fish that have pulled up in the grass. Small spinner baits and buzz baits are taking these fish. Also big worms in the willows are catching fish. Points are producing some fish on big worms. Last nights hawg fights were won by Fred Bareks with 6.21lbs. Big bass and second went to Ken Mason and Randy James. 3rd was a tie between Gary Jones, Jim Hamilton and Brian Vanderzil and Tom Novinska.

CRAPPIE: The crappie here on Truman must not like the rising water because they slowed down this week. The big thing is that the Osage got muddy and we lost all that water to fish. I did have a good report in the Finny Creek area in the Grand. They are on the summer pattern 20' of water 10' down on minnows. Also had a report that Little Tebo has some fish on the flats on the south side of the bridge.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: Here again the dirty water in the Osage has slowed the hybrid fishing. KK Island has dirtied up. There are some real nice whites coming in from the dam area. Sassy shad are working the best. They have been surfacing in the evenings. G 4 has a few good whites on it also.

CATFISH: The catfishing is good on Truman now. Shallow set trot lines baited with leeches are doing good. Jugs on the flats baited with cut shad are doing well also. The rod and reel fishing with night crawlers is picking up. Fishing along the flooded grass has been producing some nice cats.

June 9, 2005 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort - Lake Level : 606.3 / Normal Lake Level : 606 \ Water Condition: Clear / Surface Water Temp: 74 - 77

The predominate Crappie catch continues to be small. The bigger ones can be had with patience and fishing deeper water. Some large crappie are being caught just off the bank, in the coves or near the bottom in 8 - 12 feet of water close to coves, and next to river channels where it drops off to deeper water. Some crappie have settled into a summer pattern near the bridge piers, and bluffs, with good standing timber. Minnows and jigs. If using jigs, use the larger umbrella jig tipped with a minnow or crappie nibble.

Bass fishing has been very good. Numerous catches of keeper size bass have been reported. Crank baits and spinners have been working. Secondary points and banks with laydowns and timber.

Cat Fishing has been exceptional. A lot of large flatheads and blues have been caught on trot lines and jug lines, mostly using perch for bait. Several fisherpeople have reported catching numerous smaller catfish from the banks, with the usual nightcrawlers, cut shad, and sonny's stink bait. A couple of bank fishermen were using perch under a bobber and having a blast. The recent fishing photos are overwhelmingly catfish.

The White Bass fishing has been excellent. Chris Shoffner describes how he and Mike Martin solved the white bass riddle <http://southforkresort.net/Photos/ChrisShoffnerMikeMartinWhites-2.jpg> ; "We were using Bomber Model A medium divers (6 - 10 feet). I was using one that was all white and another that was green and white. The one that Mike was using was the traditional shad colors (black, silver, & white). There are a number of other lures that work equally well including the Rapala Shad Rap, Rapala Fat Rap, and most any crank bait that resembles a shad and will run deep enough to bump the bottom in 8 feet of water. We were trolling at low speed over submerged humps and shallow flats. White bass tend to congregate on these structures and feed on schooling shad. We fish one line out of each side of the boat and basically just keep making loops across the areas that hold the fish. It is really a blast when you get the hooks in one!"

June 8, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -  The fishing here on Truman is like the weather it changes every day. We have had our share of wind this week, but not a whole lot of rain right here. The lake is on a steady rise which has some of the fish on a good bite. The COE. has ben running water about every day and this has made the hybrid fishing about as good as I have seen it in a number of years. With all the rain in Kansas and Northern Missouri We should get a good rise out of this and the fishing should remain good for a good while.

LAKE LEVEL:          708.65 / WATER TEMP:         74deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Big and Little Tebo are clear. The upper Osage is dirty with a lot of floaters. Berry Bend area is stained but fishable. Both Pommies are clear. Grand is dirty above Bucksaw, stained to Finey Creek and clear to the dam.

Bass: The bass fishing last night was a little tough but I think we have to blame that on the weather. We had a storm go through about 3:30 and left us with 20 mph winds to fish in. 1st went to Doug and Ozzie Wallace with 6.34 lbs. 2nd went to Howard Love and John Pollett with 4.06lbs. 3rd went to Ernie Cox and Russell Beck along with big bass at 3.90lbs. The bite was on main lake points with big worms and jigs in 6' of water. There is also a top water bite on the points using buzz baits and Pop R's.
CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing has slowed up a little. The crappie are on the summer pattern. Fish 15' to 20' of water on the outside tree rows with minnows about 8' down. There has been a few fish caught off the bluff banks out of 30' of water fishing minnows 20' down.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: This is the best bite on the lake. We have seen more big hybrids this week than we have all season. 4" to 6" sassy shad are the top producing baits. The fish will hit these baits when surfacing or you can count them down when the fish are suspended. Best area is from Shawnee Bend to KK Island. My old buddy Tracy Ward told me there is a good white bass bite in the Berry Bend area. Trolling small Wiggle warts has been the best baits for the whites in that area.
CATFISH: The catfishing on Truman is real good on trot lines. With the rising water these fish have really started feeding hard. Shallow set lines with 1' stages baited with leeches on the shallow flats next to deep water is the best right now.

Crappie. Like last week, a lot of small crappie are being caught near the banks. This is great if you have kids, this will keep them happy and make for a fun trip. Of course it will also keep the parents very busy. The bigger ones are there, you just have to find them. A few patterns have been reported for finding the bigger fish.

1. Near the bank. While most crappie near the bank have been small, there are a few areas where the bigger ones have been on the bank.

2. Just off the bank, in the coves with deeper water. One fisherman reported he was fishing 6 and 6, 6 feet out and 6 feet deep.

3. The most consistent report for bigger crappie have them near the bottom in 8 - 10 feet of water close to coves, and next to river channels where it drops off to deeper water.

A LOT of good size crappie are showing up on fish finders, getting them to bite is the trick. As usual, keep on the move if you're not catching the fish you want. A limit of good size crappie, 10 inches and better can be had. Minnows and jigs. If using minnows expect to go through a lot of them. Some guy's like to double up on the minnows, putting two minnows on a single hook in order to entice the bigger ones to bite. If using jigs, use the larger tube jigs, such as an umbrella jig. It also helps to tip the jig with a minnow or crappie nibble.

Bass fishing has been good. The most reported lure continues to be a white/chartreuse spinnerbait, with crank baits and tubes being a close 2nd. Productive areas continue to be primary and secondary points off of the main lake.

Cat Fishing has been excellent. A lot of cats have been caught near the banks, on rod and reel or trot lines, using nightcrawlers, cut shad, or perch. Some trot liners have had to adjust the location of their lines closer to the bank.

The White Bass fishing has been very good. Once they are located, you can have a blast using silver spoons or rattle traps. Main lake, submerged humps, or long shallow points extending out into the main lake, especially where there is deeper water on both sides of the point.

June 1, 2005 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -  The holiday has past and the lake is starting to get back to normal. Even though there were lots of boats out here last weekend the fishing remained good. We saw a lot of big hybrids and lots of crappie. We had just enough rain to keep the dust down and add a little extra O2 to the water. It looks like all the fish have finished spawning and are well into their summer pattern. With that here is this weeks fishing report.

LAKE LEVEL:          707.36
WATER TEMP:        72 deg.
WATER CLARITY:
Big and Little Tebo clear. Grand, heavy stain
to Finny Creek. Both Pommies clear. Osage,
                                    heavy stain to KK Island.

BASS: There are a  couple of patterns going right now. The jig bite on the main lake points is good right now. Black and blue is the top producer. Flat points are working the best in 4' to 8' of water. Wind blown bluff banks fished with big worms is another good bite. Red shad or plum are the best colors. Here again 4' to 8' seems to be where the fish are holding. The top water bite is still good early and late. Buzz baits on the flats in 2' to 5' of water is working along with Pop R's. This weeks Hawg Fights were won by Ernie Cox and Russell Beck, they also had big bass. 2nd. was Quinten Koeffing and Lance Estes and 3rd. was Dave Braydon and Tom Novinska. The bite was a little off last night but I know our boat should have had 12lbs. Dave was practicing his Bill Dance quick release.
CRAPPIE: The crappie are well into their summer pattern. The outside tree rows in 15' to 20' of water fished with minnows about 8' deep will work. Look for trees that are under the surface for the best action. The big thing is to keep moving, don't spend to much time at each tree. Normally you will catch the big fish the first time you dip your minnow and then you might as well go to the next tree.
WHITES and HYBRIDS: We saw lots of big hybrids last weekend. Most of the fish were coming by trolling. The mag wiggle wart seemed to be the best bait. Jerry Coose did his norm and brought in a couple of 10's and a couple of 11's. These fish came on sassy shad with a 3/4 oz. head. The best area is between KK Island and the dam. There were some nice whites caught in the same area. small spoons were working along with a minnow drifted through the school of fish. These fish are at all different depths so you have to fish each individual school.
CATFISH: The catfishing is real good. Shallow set trot lines in 5' of water with stages set about a foot on the flats are producing some nice fish. Leeches and cut shad are the best baits. Look for areas that have a ditch or small creek channel close by.
