July 29, 2007 - Mark Twain - Submitted by South Fork Resort -

Lake Level : 605.7 / Normal Lake Level : 606 / Water Condition: Clear / Surface Water Temp: 81 - 83

For the most part Crappie have been very good during the past week. Good size to them. Still pretty much the same pattern as it has been lately. The most consistent pattern has been catching crappie at 10 feet deep over about 28 - 30 feet of water. The crappie have been kinda scattered at different depths. Bridge piers are still a good place to catch crappie, but they are also worked over pretty hard. Tree tops near steep dropoffs along channels has been productive. Catch a couple here and there, and keep on the move. Minnows, or jigs w/nibbles. Black or red and chartreuse. White/yellow, or blue/white plastic tube jigs.

Bass fishing has been good, channels off of points, deep.

Catfishing has been good for rod and reel fishermen. Some crappie fishermen have been hooking into some catfish with minnows. But for the most part it's been nightcrawlers that have done the best.

White Bass have been fair, catching them off of main lake points or humps. Silver spoons or rattle traps.

July 25, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -

It's great to be able to do a fishing report instead of a lake report. I will do a little of each and both of them will be good news. To start with I want to let you know that with the exception of a little high water and some drift on the banks everything is some what back to normal. We are totally back in operation with the boat ramp readily accessible and both roads going into the campground open. We still have some of the extension walkway on but are removing about a section a day.

The lake level this morning is 723.03. The COE is still running about 56000 cfs. of water through the dam which is dropping the lake about 8" a day. The water clarity is a light stain to clear on all the arms on the lake. There is still a big drift pile in front of the dam but the rest of the lake is pretty clean. Last night I saw basically no floaters out there. There is a little on the Osage from Tally Bend to the power lines this side of Berry Bend but with some caution you can run without any problems. The water temp is 78 deg.

BASS: The lake conditions haven't seemed to effect the bass fishing. Last weekend one of the tournaments on the lake took 25 lbs. to win, that is about a good a string of fish as you will see anywhere. Last night in the Hawg Fights it too 15.56 lbs to win and the big bass was 4.43 lbs. The winners were Howard Love and Steve Blake having both. Second went to Marty Watson and Randy Lutjen with 6.65 lbs. Third was Jeff and Bob Rehmer with 3.81 lbs. The best pattern right now with the falling water is main lake points using big worms in 6' to 15' of water. Isolated trees on the points seem to be holding more than one fish. There is a buzz bait bite on the flats just before dark in 4' to 6' of water. Look for the flooded bushes with shad in the area.

CRAPPIE: I talked to Marty Zych this morning and he said there is a crappie bite starting all over the lake you just have to decide what you are looking for. He said there are some real good fish being caught up the Osage but the bite is slow. The grand is producing good numbers of 10' fish along with Big Tebo. There have been some good stringers come off the P 14 area of Big Pommie. The pattern is 20' of water fishing the cedars down 8' to 10' with minnows. Look for the trees that are just starting to come out of the water.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: Last night we saw some real nice hybrids come in. Jerry Coose and Kyle had to limits of fish that weighed 8 lbs to 11 lbs. They caught then on top throwing sassy shads. Look in the O 3 area and the G 4 area. The best action seems to be shortly before dark. With the lake level where it is and the COE running water everyday my guess is that these fish are going to be active for a long time.

CATFISH: No report, but if anyone sees Dick Caton our local catfish expert please tell him he can get back to fishing.

July 18, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -

This week again I will do a lake report instead of a fishing report. This mornings lake level at 6:00 am. was 727.98. The COE is still running about 56,000 cfs through the dam. Truman is falling at a rate of about 6" a day which is a good drop. All the arms of Truman are clearing up nicely. Water clarity runs from stained in the upper reaches to lightly stained on the rest of the lake. There is a lot of drift on the Osage arm and in front of the dam at this time. The Pommies are pretty well clear of drift along with big Tebo.

The problem is launching is still tough. The 3 high water ramps are still open at Berry Bend, Shawnee Bend, and Tally Bend. I was told yesterday they have a ramp at State Park that is useable. You might try contacting the marinas to see what the launch status is before coming to the lake.

We are looking to get the main road open at Sterett Creek sometime late today and probably the campground road by late in the weekend.

As far as the fishing goes the crappie are still doing good in 20' of water fishing minnows 8' deep. Marty Zych said that the upper Grand was producing some good fish. I also heard of good fish coming out of Big Pommie around the P 14 marker. Most of the fish have been coming out of the cedars. The bass bite is Pop R's early and late and flukes and jigs fished in the sawdust in the flooded creeks. Look in 8' to 12' of water. With the falling water I look for these fish to start moving to the secondary points. We have seen a few whites surfacing in our cove but most of these were the little guys. No catfish report this week.

July 6, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek -

This week there isn't going to be a fishing report but more a informational report on what's going on here on Truman. Right now it is 1 pm. Friday afternoon and the lake level is 725.17, normal pool is 706. This makes us about 19' high and still rising. We are expected to be at 728 by Monday the 9th. The COE has been running about 50,000 cfs through the turbines and gates all week. The problem is that the inflow is greater than the outflow at this time. With the amount of rain not only that we had but the rain that hit the Marais des Cygnes water shed in Kansas which feeds the Osage we can't get rid of it fast enough.

The COE is looking for a crest at about 728 on Monday. I sure hope they are right.

The COE has pulled all their ramps. They are opening the high water ramps at this time. Shawnee Bend high water ramp is open by the dam. We will be pontooning people back and forth from our road to the marina.

There is a lot of drift on the lake at this time. Trees and big logs are very common. Boaters should use extreme caution. The Osage seems to have the most. From KK Island to Tally Bend is the worst. The water color is dirty to a heavy stain in that area. From Long Shoal to Deepwater it is dirty to a heavy stain. The Pommie's are a light stain to clear. From the dam to Brush Creek on Big Tebo is a light stain. From the dam to Little Tebo bridge is a light stain. In our area the water is a light stain to clear. Again there is a lot of drift so please use extreme caution.

As for a fishing report the crappie re hitting in 30' of water about 17' down on minnows in the big trees. The bass are starting to move shallow, 2' of water under the sawdust. Big jigs and worms are working the best. There are a few whites surfacing, small grubs an a 1/4 oz head is a good choice. Catfish are slow.

If you are thinking of camping please call ahead so we can advice you on what's going on. The marina and resort will remain open during the entire performance. You can contact us at Sterett Creek Marina

I wish I could tell you this will be over in a couple of days but it looks like the high water will be with us for a while. We are doing everything in our powers to make things as easy as possible during these conditions.

Till next week

June 27, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - Truman is running about a foot high and the water clarity is really starting to improve. The COE has slowed the water flow down and the fishing has started picking up. The crappie fishing is improving along with the hybrid fishing. The bass fishing remains good so it's just a great time to be on the water.

Lake Level: 707.3
Water Temp: 82 deg.
Water Clarity: Stained to light stain.

BASS:
With the slow down in the flow of water I don't know if the fish got confused or the anglers got confused. Last weekend the tournament weights were great running in the 17lb. to 19 lb range with a big bass weighed in in the TBF tournament weighing 8.06 lbs. Last night in the Hawg fights it was a little different. First place went to Hap Hartman and Larry Wright with 7.70 lbs and big bass weighing 3.35. Second went to Ken Mason and Randy James with 6.57. Third was Marty and Kim Watson with 6.53 lbs. There is a good top water bite early in the morning on the timbered flats in 3' to 6' of water. Later the fish seem to move to the deeper water next to the river channels. Big worms fished in 10' to 15' of water seems to be working the best. Larry said last night they caught their fish out of 2' to 4' of water on jigs. He said the key was you had to have shad present.

CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing is really starting to pick up. Fish the tree rows on the edge of the flats in 15' to 20' of water. Minnows fished 8' to 10' down is working. Cedars seem to be holding the better fish. There is a good bite on the Osage from KK Island to Berry Bend. There is also a good bite in the Clear Creek area.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: We are still seeing a good number of hybrids come in.The weir in front of the dam and Point O 3 are two of the better producing areas. Spoons and sassy shad are the top baits. There is still some surface activity going on in the same areas. These fish seem to be feeding on the small fry so you might want to use a 2" to 3" grub on a 1/4 oz head. Put a popping bobber in front of the grub for added attractant.

CATFISH: Trot lines are working the best when set in 10' to 15' of water on the edge of the points coming out of the coves. Leeches and gold fish are the top baits. We saw a couple of nice flat heads last weekend and it looked like they had already spawned.

WALLEYE: There has been several walleye brought in this week. The best spot was the weir and the fish were caught on small spoons.

This weekend they will be shooting fireworks off the dam on Sat. night so please be careful on the water and on the highways.

June 20, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - The lake is still dropping and with the COE running water everyday it is starting to pull the dirty water towards the dam. Little Tebo is in good shape. The Grand is dirty from G 4 up to Deepwater. The Osage is dirty from Berry Bend to Weaubleau Creek. Both Pommies are in good shape. Big Tebo is dirty from Brush Creek above C bridge. That still leaves a lot of good water to fish and the fishing is still good. The water temp continues to rise and the crappie are starting to improve along with the hybrids. The weather for the weekend sounds good so we are looking for lots of fish to come in.

LAKE LEVEL: 708.2
WATER TEMP: 78 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Light stain to dirty.

BASS:
This week the bass fishing has slowed just a little. With the warming water temp the fish are starting to suspend and are getting a little harder to find. Jig and frog along with big worms are working on these fish. There are fish holding in 12' to 15' of water about 8' deep. The brushier trees seem to be holding better fish. PPJ jigs and 9" plum worms are working the best. The point fish have backed off into 10' to 12' of water and are sitting on the current break side of the points. There is a top water bite early and late off the secondary points. Buzz baits seem to be working the best. The results of last nights Hawg fights are, Ozzie Wallace and Doug Zink 13.03 lbs and big bass at 3.49 lbs.
Second went to Kevin Love with 4.93 lbs. Third was Chuck Stroman and Tom Novinska with 3.09 lbs. Last night was one of those nights that you caught a lot of fish but for the most part they had a size problem.

CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing continues to get better every day. The lake is down enough to where you can find you tree rows and catch fish on the summer pattern. Fish seem to be holding in 15' of water down about 12'. Minnows are the best bait. Look for the trees that are just coming out or just under the surface. The Clear Creek area has produced some good fishing this week.

WHITES & HYBRIDS:
We are still seeing a good number of hybrids come in. The sassy shad still seems to be the best bait working at this point. The dam area seems to be the best area. Have had a few reports that KK Island has some fish around it. Have not seen many whites this week but with the water temp warming I look for more fish to start coming in any day now.

CATFISH: The catfish are doing the same this week as they did last week. Shallow set floating trot lines baited with leeches in 4' to 6' of water are working the best. The falling water is not helping the catfishing. Set close to deeper water for best results.

WALLEYE: This is something new and I will throw it in every now and then. We are seeing and hearing of more and more walleye all the time. There are a few anglers that have figured out a pattern to catch walleye. Right now it's crank baits on the points. Fish seem to be holding in 10' to 12' of water and are feeding as shallow as 3' on the points. Fire tiger crank baits are the bait of choice. From what I am hearing the flatter gravel points are where to look.

June 14, 2007 - Truman and others - Submitted by out of state angler - Well don't ask why but I have gone to Lake Truman 5 years in a row and EVERY time it gets WORSE for Bass fishing, Planned a little trip with my 16 year old grandson to do some "real bass fishing" as we are fro Colorado and I haven't caught any nice bass since I moved 7 years ago from Alabama. I check ALL the fishing reports and concluded that the first week in June would be good form Bass on Truman. The reports said "DINGY" water, but some of the best bass fishing in 20 years. Glad I wasn't there 20 years ago, because ever sibnce I've gone it has STUNK. The water being "DINGY" , well that to me means you could see about 12 inches at least down in the water. The water on Lake of the Ozarks, and Truman was almost Dark Brown from all the mud. My grandson once got out of the boat a walked across the lake it was so full of mud (he didn't actually, but it was horrible) Caught 2 bass in 3 days, and YES I do know how to bass fish. Travel all over the US bass fishing, Texas, California, Alabama, Georgia, Flroida. WE thought well lets hit Table Rock, the water will at least eb clean. We di and the bass were already in 30 to 40 feet of water. NOT around docks, fall downs, or stumps. Caught 2 nass in 2 days there.

I have been fishing bass a good long time and I conclude from the past 5 years that Missouri bass fishing is about as bad as as New Jersey.

June 13, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - It's starting to look like summer is really here. We are looking at some mid 80's for the rest of the week, and not a lot of rain. The water temp is starting to warm up to the mid 70's and we are starting to see some nice fish come in. We are still about 4' high which makes the lake level good for fishing. The COE have been pulling water everyday, so the big hybrids are starting to surface. Lots of good fishing to come.

Lake Level: 710.89 / Water Temp: 75 deg at the dam.
Water Clarity: Light stain to dirty.
Little Tebo, light stain.
Big Tebo, stained.
Grand, G 4 to Otter,dirty.
Osage, Dam to Berry Bend, stained, above dirty.
Pommies, light stain.

BASS: We are still looking at 20 lb stringers of fish to win a tournament. The jig bite is starting to pick up along with the worm. Flat points fished 4' to 8' seems to be working the best. Sure does help if the wind is blowing on it. Last weekend a lot of fish came out of the dirty water. Buzz baits are also starting to pick up fish on the cloudy days. Last nights Hawg Fights were won by Larry Wright and Hap Hartman with 14.78 lbs. They also had big bass weighing 4.36 lbs. Second was Ozzie Wallace and Doug Zink with 8.99 lbs. Third went to Kevin Love with 7.43 lbs. Brown jigs and red shad worms seem to be the top colors.

CRAPPIE: We have seen some real nice crappie come in this week. Marty Zych caught a 2.7 lb. fish earlier in the week. Guide Steve Blake brought in a big stringer also. They are fishing the summer pattern. 20' of water 8' deep with minnows. The lake has come down enough that you can see the tree rows popping out. I did hear of a bite starting in the cedars in the Berry Bend area.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: We have seen a lot of big hybrids this week. 10 to12 lb. fish. There is some surface activity in the evenings. Sassy shad baits seem to be working the best. The KK Island area has been producing along with the G 4 area. Hawg sticks and Zara Spooks are working on the top water action. There have been a few whites taken off the weir this week. Spoons seem to be working the best.

CATFISH: Trot lines are working the best in our area. Sets in 8' to 20' of water close to main lake points baited with leeches and cut shad have produced some good fish. In this area the flat heads act like they are finishing up spawning.

Tommy

June 13, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Curt Graves -June 2-3, Heartland Tournaments, Truman Lake
I had a great practice day on Thursday catching numbers of good keepers on a jigs around channel swing pockets. The fish were sitting in front of "bank grass" edges in 4-8' of water. On Friday, I looked for an early topwater bite and a back up pattern. After 4 hours of nothing, I ran a couple of channel swing pockets as on Thursday and caught a keeper fish in 30 minutes. With confidence, I took off saturday in my 2007 ProCraft from Albers Marine. Unfortunately, the takeoff ride may have been the most productive part of the day. After catching a short fish at my first stop, I proceeded to lose 3 keepers including a 4-pounder right at the boat. I was able to manage 2 keepers by noon but was unable to finish my limit. Disheartened, I released my fish and did not weigh since the Elite series doesn't have a year-end championship.

On Sunday, dad and I decided to try a couple of points on our way to spots I'd had success at on Thursday. The first 2 points produced 3 quick fish but only 1 kept. We were feeling pretty good with a keeper before 7 AM. We then ran another 25 - 30 points without another keeper. Again, we did not weigh since the BFT doesn't have a year-end championship.

A lot of fish were caught from the flooded bushes but I couldn't figure that out. With the lake dropping, I really thought the fish were moving out. I c-rig and jig should have done the trick. While our results were disappointing, it was good to be on the water with family.

June 6, 2007 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek - Lots of good weather and lots of good fishing. There were several bass tournaments out on the lake last weekend and they all seemed to take about 20 lbs to win. That's a good string of fish no matter where you go. We are starting to see some real nice hybrids come in, quite a few in the 8 to 10 lb range. The lake is still falling and the water in our area looks great. We are still about 9' high but with the COE running water every day I think the fishing will keep getting better.

LAKE LEVEL: 714.3
WATER TEMP: 74 deg.
WATER CLARITY: In our area it is a light stain. The Osage is stained.
G 10 and above is heavy stain. Pommie's, light stain

BASS: Right now is some of the best bass fishing you will see. With tournaments weighting in 20 lbs stringers and 3 hour tournaments weighting in over 14 lbs there is a good bite going on. The best pattern is flat points that have deeper water close by. Fish are holding in 6' to 10' of water. The rig is starting to work. Also a Texas rigged beaver is taking good numbers of fish. The spook fished early and late in shallow water on the flat points is working. Look for bait fish flipping in 1' to 2' of water. I have been seeing fish holding on the original bank line which is about 8'. Last nights Hawg fights were won by Fred Bareks with 14.32 lbs. Second went to Larry Wright and Hap Hartman with 8.17 lb.
Third was Howard Love and John Pollit with 7.75. Big bass was Tom Novinska and Chuck Stroman with a 5.67 lb. The way it looks the females have gone through their rest period after spawning and are getting back on the feed wagon.

CRAPPIE: The summer pattern is trying to get started but with the high water the fish are a little confused on where they want to be. There is a bite starting on the Osage in cedars
on minnows. 20' of water about 8' down in the tree rows has been working. There has been fish caught off the weir on spoons and drifting minnows at the same depth. The bluff fish are still in 40' of water down about 20'. I think with the lake falling and the tree rows starting to show better the crappie fishing will improve very quickly.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: We are starting to see surface activity with the hybrids right now. It seems the best action is early in the morning and right before sunset. Sassy shad and Zara spooks are the top baits on the big hybrids. The fish are still in the smaller pods yet but they are still hitting. The G 4 area has been the best area right now.

CATFISH: We had some big flat heads weighted in last weekend. A 54 and 56 lb. were caught using black perch. Trot lines set in about 8' seemed to produce the best. Jug fishing on the flats baited with leeches produced some nice channels and blues. Here again 8' seemed to work the best.
