July 29, 2009 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek Marina - I know the calendar says it's the  end of July but the weather sure isn't showing it. With the temps in the 80's and a few rain showers it feels more like spring. We have seen lots of crappie and bass come in this week. The weatherman says it is supposed to remain like this for the rest of the week so it might be a good time to hit the lake for some great fishing.

                                LAKE LEVEL:          707.12
                                WATER TEMP:        82 deg.
WATER CLARITY:  Clear to light stain.

BASS: The bass are still doing well this week. Last nights Hawg Fights started out in the rain and then tuned into a beautiful night. Blake Felix and Tabby Gillis were the top team with 8.57 lbs. ( 3 fish limit ). Second was Doug and ( no hat ) Ozzie Wallace with 8.55 lbs and they also had big fish at 4.14 lbs. Third was Desmin and Kevin Carl with 8.09 lbs. The fish are pretty much point fish ranging from 4' to 12' deep. Jig and frog and big worms are the top baits. The top water bite is still working early and late on the timbered flats.

CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing here on Truman is really good. Minnows are the best bait. There are fish on the bluff banks in 30' to 35' of water down about 20'. There are also fish holding in the tree rows on the edge of the flats in 17' to 20' of water down 8' to 10'. They are in the cedars and hard woods both. The Osage has started producing some good fish. You will still catch lots of little guys but the better fish are in with them.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: The COE has slowed the water flow down which in turn has slowed the white bass fishing down. There has been a few fish caught trolling on the shallow humps, some as shallow as 4'.

CATFISH: Jugs fished on the flats in 20' of water set at about 8' have been producing some cats. Cut bait has been the best of the best this week. The fish seem to be holding close to the channels.

July 22, 2009 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek Marina - We had 2.5" of rain this week but it hasn't affected the water color of the fish. The weather has been cool for mid July and there has been a good number of anglers enjoying the good weather and good fishing. There has been lots of limits of crappie come in. The COE has slowed the water flow which in turn has slowed the white bass fishing. The bass fishing remains good here on Truman.

                                LAKE LEVEL:           707.19
                                WATER TEMP:         79 deg.
WATER CLARITY:   Clear to light stain.

BASS: The Hawg Fights last night showed that the bass fishing here on Truman is good. With a 3 fish limit Doug and Ozzie Wallace took the honors with 8.91 lbs. Second went to Doug Long and Marty Watson with 8.66 lbs. Third was Ernie Cox and Russell Beck with 8.03 lbs. Big bass went to Larry Wright and Hap Hartman with 4.62 lb. The bite was a jig and frog bite on the points in 5' to 15' of water. There was reports of lots of little fish being caught. Buzz baits are starting to produce fish early and late on the flats in the timber.

CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing has been good on Truman. Minnows has been the top bait. There are fish coming off the bluff banks 25' to 35' of water with fish suspending at about 12'. Cedar trees seem to be holding the best fish. Tree rows on the edge of the flats in 15' to 20' of water are also producing some fish when fished with minnows about 7' down. On cloudy days the fish seem to be holding shallower and when the sun is high they have been down as deep as 20'.

WHITES: With the lake getting back to normal the COE has slowed the water flow considerably, this has the white bass spread out all over. There are a few fish being caught trolling on the humps. There are also some fish surfacing in the evenings. he G 4 area has been doing a few along with the cemetery in the Little Tebo arm.

CATFISH: Jugs are the best of the best right now. Cut bait has been the best when fished on the flats in 15' to 20' of water. Set baits about 8'. Leeches have been producing some nice channels on the same pattern.

July 15, 2009 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek Marina - The weather this week has been perfect and the fish have been cooperating so it has been a super week here on Truman. The lake is about a foot high and the water color is perfect. The COE has been generating in the afternoon so the evening bite has been good. The weatherman is calling for the mid 80's over the weekend so it sounds like the perfect time to get out and enjoy mother nature at her finest.

                             LAKE LEVEL:          706.99
                             WATER TEMP:        80 deg.
WATER CLARITY:  Clear to light stain.

BASS: The bass fishing remains very good here on Truman. With a 3 fish limit in the Hawg Fights last night Doug and Ozzie Wallace proved that the summer pattern is going strong with a winning string weighing 13.93 lbs.
They also had big bass at 5.02 lbs. Charlie (2nd place) Eggers and Steve Fowler came in 2nd with 9.05 lbs. Third went to Jeff Smith and Joe Kosal with 7.73 lbs. The fish are starting to suspend in the timber on the breaks and main lake tree rows. 15' of water down about 6' on jig and frog. There are also fish starting to pull up on the humps in 15' to 20' of water, plum worms Texas rigged is working here.

CRAPPIE: The crappie are still hitting on the buffs in 25' to 35' of water. fish the cedars with minnows down 15'. There are also fish moving up on the flats in the tree rows in 15' to 20' water. Minnows fished down 7' to 10' in the hardwoods will produce good numbers of fish. Look for hedge and water oaks.

WHITES: There is a good surface bite in the evening. The G-4 area seems to be one of the better areas along with the cemetery. Rat L Traps and Pop R's are the top baits along with a 1/2 oz. slab spoon. Check the weir in the early evening for fish when they are generating water.

CATFISH: Jugs on the flats in 15' of water set about 8' has been working this week. Cut bait, leeches and perch are the top baits. We are seeing some nice blues come in. Set jugs close to deep water.

July 13, 2009 - Lake of the Ozarks - Submitted by Old Oar House Inn Mile Marker 81 -Lake of the Ozark water elevation is 658.05'. Truman lake water elevation is 707.25'. LOZ water temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Water discharge through Truman Turbines is 0 CFS and over the spillway was 350 CFS.

Crappie: Slow
Crappie fishing is still very slow. One report I received said a few fish were caught in the deeper water using Chartreuse colored jigs. Another report said just below the dam the smaller crappies were schooled up and hitting a few minnows and jigs. With the water temperature this warm it's doubtful there will be action any time soon.

Catfish: Excellent
The big blue and flathead cats are finally off their nests and Bob Estenbaum was out there to welcome them back this weekend. Bob caught this real nice 35# blue cat within site of the Oar House Saturday afternoon. Bob said he easily limited out and had several fish in the greater than 5# category. Bob used shad bellies and fished the flats just above the main channel drop off. I also talked to Anthony Ford with www.Catfishingguide.com this weekend and he said his clients were catching some really nice catfish these past couple weeks. Whenever in doubt as to what bait to use when fishing for cats always defer to fresh shad bellies if you can get them. If you have a throw net and stop in some weekend when I'm helping Bernie I'll show you exactly where to throw your nets only 10 minutes from the Oar House.

Largemouth Bass: Slow
Bass fishing has been slow but steady. There was another bass tournament this weekend as was evidenced by the sound of high powered boats screaming down the lake early Saturday and Sunday morning. A couple of the boats stopped in and gassed up and I saw some real nice fish in their live wells. One angler was using rubber worms exclusively and had a great looking 7# fish for his efforts. Another angler I spoke to was using flashy bright spooned crank baits with a fluorescent colored tail on it.

Carp: Good
I'm still seeing good numbers of grass and buffalo carp around the docks. Of course our feeding them is keeping them around. The really tried and true way to catch carp is w/ a good bow fishing set up and some good lights for night fishing. Hunt the bank edges of the back water coves in the evenings. The better set ups have elevated platforms which gives the archer a great height advantage.

Walleye: Poor
It seems walleye fishing has tapered off as quickly as it became great. Joe & Kim Gregory stopped in for one of our "World famous" Oar House Full House double-decker bacon cheeseburgers and reported they'd been fishing hard for walleye all day and hadn't caught a single one. Joe correctly surmised the lack of a current was the probable reason for the sudden drop off in walleye fishing. There are not a lot of walleye in Lake of the Ozarks but Joe, Kim and I all share the same belief the new state record is presently swimming in LOZ.

White Bass: No Report

For up to date water temperatures and elevations for LOZ and Truman call Truman Dam Water Report at (660) 438-7317 and mash #2 once the recording starts.
We endorse trophy fish catch and release!

July 1, 2009 - Truman - Submitted by Sterett Creek Marina -It's hard to believe but it's the 4th of July already. So far this year the fishing here on Truman has been fantastic and with the way it looks now it will continue to stay that way. The weather has been great this week and the weatherman says we should have a good weekend.

LAKE LEVEL:         713.59
                           WATER TEMP:       83 deg.
WATER CLARITY:  Clear to Light stain. Osage dirty.

BASS: With the high heat, humidity and water temp we did something different last night in the Hawg Fights, we went to a 3 fish limit. This gives more room in the live wells and more oxygen to help keep the fish in better shape. All the anglers I talked to after the tournament said they liked the idea. Also we did not loose a fish.
This weeks weights were lower due to the 3 fish limit but it sure is exciting with the weights being that close. First went to Ernie and David Cox ( Ernie brought in a ringer this week) with 8.30 lbs. and had big bass at 3.83 lbs. Second went to Jim Lehares and Bob Dodd with 8.20 lbs. Third went to Jeff Smith and Joe Kosal with 8.01 lbs. The two main patters were main lake tree rows 8' to 10' pitching 10" worms. The second was main lake points in 10' to 12' of water using jig and frog. There is also a top water bite going in the early morning on Pop'Rs and spooks. These fish are up on the flat points.

CRAPPIE: The best crappie fishing this week has been off the bluffs. 25' to 30' of water and down 10' to 12'. The was a couple days this week that the bigger fish were suspended 4' to 6' above the smaller fish. I had a couple of people tell me they were catch crappie on small crank baits while fishing the bluff banks. These fish were close to the bluff ends.

WHITES & HYBRIDS: The top water action has really got going on the whites. they are surfacing all over in our area. Sassy shad seems to be the best bait on whites and hybrids along with the 1/2oz. spoon. There are fish on the humps in about 15' of water, here again the spoon is the top choice. We have seen several nice hybrids come in this week. Right before dark seems to be the best top water action.

CATFISH: We have been seeing a few blues this week. Perch on trot lines seem to be the best. 10' to 15' has been the best depth. Jugs with leeches floated on the flats are catching channels. Set stages about 5'.

That's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina

If you are coming to the lakes area this weekend please drive with care. The fireworks display will be shot off the dam Sat night July 4th. Please remember what the 4th is all about and thank a vet.

Till next week
